| Total | $32,900.41 | $25,325.95 | 129.908% |

My house addition is getting closer to becoming a reality. I cashed in a Universal Life policy which was costing me way too much. I took the cash and put some away specifically for the addition and related expenses, and paid off some expenses. The total listed for the House Addition isn't getting touched for any other expense. I knocked off the rest of the challenges. Now I just need to put away money for the upcoming ski season. Rentals are already funded. Season tickets are next. There is still some cash left over from cashing out the insurance policy. I'm just not counting it as savings because it may be used to pay debt. -movinonup

Oops, it appears that I forgot to update in August. Not that I had anything worth updating. This past year has been a financial mess, with building the new house. We were finally able to move in a couple of months ago, and we sold our old house last week. Hopefully things will settle down now. The past few months we carried credit card balances (for the first time in about decade), so we used the proceeds of the house sale to pay those off, buy some new furniture for the new place (but not going overboard), and just finishing up odds and ends here. We did pretty well with the sale, and were able to replenish some of the savings we used up. Our new mortgage is significantly larger than our old one (but some of our bills are decreasing), so my plan is to wait until the new year to set up specific savings goals here. I'll take these next few months to see how we will adjust to being financially normal again (that is, not having to pay two mortgages, insurances, utility bills, etc. and a ton of contractors). I'll continue to read and cheer everyone's saving successes! Hope everyone has a great holiday weekend.

Good job, Savers! We've got even more stars in the night sky and our rose garden is blooming like crazy! Note: those of you who have saved more than $25,000 used to get a cake for that milestone. Now my smilies just show instead of the cake icon. I've switched it up and have given you a tropical island instead of a measly cake. As I was doing the smilies this time, I couldn't help but think how far some of us have come. Some of us started out not saving a cent. And look where we are now! Even if you're just setting money aside for upcoming expenses, you are still that much ahead of the game. Very impressive, Savers!

Shout Outs Part 1: I'm back but feeling a bit mentally challenged. If you updated in July or August and I miss you in the shouts, kindly message me and forgive. Hoping to encourage us all this time by highlighting/quoting helpful statements from your posts! shanendoah Congratulations on surpassing your original goal and being at "pert near" 80% of your bumped up goal!! You are right... "Just plugging along...it's something." regecko Kudos on continuing to build savings even after earning your . Nice work planning your savings, and using them according to your plan. And my favorite quotes of your recent posts: "I may or may not accomplish this, but I'm going to try" and "but in the meantime, I'm just going to keep going." azucena Congratulations on achieving your savings goals and more. Perfect time to step away from savings goals, with plenty of time to get the debts cleared by end of year. I am sorry for your loss of your father and that you have the complicated and difficult feelings. Glad you are here and can express yourself, maybe it will help in your processing. And a quote from your recent post: "It's difficult to explain." Often how we feel about people and money takes time and sorting, and isn't easy. I think being here on the WIR Board is so helpful when finances get clouded by emotion, and vice versa. movinonup Normally I position you at the middle of shoutouts and then take an intermission, but today am putting the dancing banana winners first, and I think you have most recently earned yours congratulations!!! And two quotes from your posts: "You used the money for its stated purpose. Well done. -movinonup" and "This is exactly when you should use your EF. Nicely done. -movinonup" It is so helpful to be encouraging each other like this, and helping each other as savers to be comfortable about spending. ETA: I need to pause so Movinonup you are still my middleman

Shout Outs Part 2: trimatty471 Good job being at 91% of goal, and roses on every line except two. And quoting trimatty: "I was able to deposit a lot more this month because of doing overtime .... " And: "My goal is ........ but I want some flexibility in case I need it." OT pays and especially when you channel it well for a goal. And goals are good, especially when kept flexible. Jaguar Nice work progressing to 22.3% accomplished! and doing your Gateway Voyage!! And for encouragement from Jaguar, here's her signature line: "There's one thing you've got to learn, is not to be afraid of it. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning." And of course the doing part is helped along by the accountability that WIR provides. megaptera WIR experience has shown that housing transitions can really shake things up finanacially. Congratulations on your progress on the transition! And here's Megap: "...so my plan is to wait until the new year to set up specific savings goals here. I'll take these next few months to see how we will adjust ... I'll continue to read and cheer everyone's saving successes!" Nice work staying present and primed, and supporting the Savers! nikiz628 Good job keeping your financial boat steady during back-to-school expenses and pesky Murphy visits! During a phase like this it's extra good to be a WIR Saver. And quoting Niki: "I am hoping that September brings more financial "luck". We have 5 paychecks, so that right there makes it awesome." Bouncing back, looking forward, and focusing on the positive!!! bankergurl You are also doing a good job of holding steady through a series of expenses. As movinonup pointed out, when we use our savings for its planned purpose, we are achieving a goal also. And hopefully with your plan for some "no spend" time you will be rolling forward again soon. Quoting Bankergurl from her posts on the Racers' thread: "Celebrations for this update: ..." She always finds the milestones and celebrates them, which is very encouraging and helps with monitoring progress and patterns.

Shout Outs Part 3: minnesotapaintlady You accomplished nearly $2K in savings during the past month!! And have achieved 82.8% of goal. Nicely done. And In her latest Saver post MPL said: "I need to simplify these savings goals for 2018." Now is a good time to plan ahead or tweak things with an eye for the next year which is less than 4 months away. seriousthistime Nice savings of $8626 and 62.2%. How are you feeling about the sweep fund?? And for Serious I'm going to quote a question she asked one of our fellow savers: "What kind of saver are you?" That got me thinking about my savings "type". And I'm a saver who needs to ponder that question... It could be I've gotten comfortable and less urgent about building savings. How about you Savers? What kind of saver are you?? tobinikui $15973 saved is GOOD! And at 68.8% to goal you are on target for the year so far. Though you think you might finish short of goal, it sounds like the difference will be less than the unexpected legal expense. I'm proud of you Saver Friend. And my quote of Tobinikui: "That money is better directed to paying off the minivan, and bulking up our cash savings (ER fund). We already have more than he (Dave Ramsey)advises, but I am aiming for a number that helps me sleep more soundly at night." Savings goals and progress toward achieving them are good for peace of mind, and that amount will vary from person to person. Good to know what works for you! nidena Congratulations on $8130 saved! 24.6% of goal, or 60% if your new car goal is not factored in (Is that a multi-year goal? It can be good to look at both percentages). And quoting Nidena: " I've been down to zero credit card debt a couple times in the past but never really had it gone long enough that I could focus on savings goals. It's really nice to be able to do so now." And doing it now is the way to keep the CC debt gone...congrats! chiver78 Has the weekly savings challenge gone to the wayside? How about your EF?? How about building your EF as a savings goal? You can get a lot of satisfaction and build a savings safety net. And Chiver had this to say: "now I understand why everyone was asking me to lay stuff out in a table or something." You got it, visuals help!! (at least true for me)

Shout Outs Part 4: missing some of our Savers, Hope to see you again soon shopaholic814 finnime and Poptart sealy Hi friend, I'm guessing you are back in session. Would love to see you again. Saving4Norway I hope you catch your breath soon, update your reworked numbers and share some stories about Norway snapdragon How are you doing friend? (Hug) I hope you aren't having too much trouble with your mom's estate. You were quite a bit ahead of pace in your savings before so your savings level is still right on target, though I can imagine it may have taken a backseat for now. We savers can be encouraged and motivated by Snap's words: "There is nothing wrong with wanting to dream big. That is the great things about dreams, you can change them. You are still doing excellent on your goals so just keep your eye on the ball." TheHaitian Good to see you back and good work on your savings of $40513 and 85.2%!! And quoting TheHaitian: "I think I figured out my next step. Just needed to put it out there and needed to have it written all out to get an idea." More affirmation that putting it in writing helps produce ideas. I'm not sure who I'm agreeing with when I say this, but why not use your HSA to pay med bills? What better or other use could you have for it?? teachermom How is the school year? nice update of $13828! And Teachermom says: "Been super busy ... Finally had time to figure out my update. Plugging along!!" So glad and looking forward to your next update! Saver gals and guys, Good Job! keep up the good work!! thanks for the shootout forwardwego. yes, the calendar savings has fallen by the wayside. at this point in the calendar year, it would be a CC payment to make up the loss. I'll just make the CC payment and pat stuff off this year (I have a pretty aggressive payoff plan right now) and I will restart the calendar plan for 2018. everything that has derailed me in recent years is no longer a problem because I am no longer entertaining requests. so I don't think I'll be derailed next year.

But I did learn that Wave 1 of the Gateway Voyage needs to be done the most, and that only takes one day, actually one 4 1/2 hour session. I'm hoping to get back into it really soon again.

Thank you so much for the kind words and thoughts. And thank you for the reminder that dreams can be changed. Looks like Hurricane Irma is coming here (Ormond Beach FL). Don't know if going west is a good idea yet and I'm thinking by the time we know which direction to take that evacuating will be a disaster of its own. Last year Hurricane Matthew was category 3, and thankfully took a bobble to the east at the last minute, but felt very scary. Cost us @ $5K for 2 fences. We have great tenants who boarded up their windows, removed boarding afterward, and cleaned up the yard. Since then we did preventive tree service and feeling glad about that, took down a giant water oak just inside of our property line that had potential to damage our house or the neighbor's. I'll feel okay staying here if the storm is similar to Matthew because our property is in better condition for the winds. Irma is projected to be cat 4 or 5 when it gets to FL, and evacuating is ideal, but being in gridlock on the highway is a real possibility. Luckily I'm not a person who panics easily or prematurely. What we need here is for people who "need" to evacuate to go, and the rest stay off the roads. Also today is the 1st anniversary of my friend's daughter's suicide so today feels heavy. Shout Out to other FL and Southeastern WIR: Take care, Take that ounce of prevention... speechchick71 Are you still in FL?

I've simplified my list of funds but was too lazy to completely remove the two gaps. I'll see if it bugs me enough to take the time to fix it.

Thank you for the shoutout!
So...one trip to the Southwest and one trip to Florida done. Both went on the credit card. School started three weeks ago and I'm waiting for the VA to get their crap straight and pay for my tuition for this term (to the school) as well as August's housing allowance (~$500) and the term's book allowance (~$500)(both directly to me). With the change to the GIBill (now the Forever GIBill rather than the Post-9/11 GIBill) and the VA website being down, who knows when that will happen. Hopefully soon.
I pulled money from the larger EF to pay off the credit card. The money from the VA will go to replenish the larger EF.
I got a roommate--rent $500/mo--and I've started using what he pays me as my grocery money. It's only been a few weeks so I'm working the full $500 into my budget in a more useful manner. Still working on that one. I will probably use it to fund my Wawa gift card/gas fund too. That would enable me to allocate those line item amounts to other things.
The LTC insurance is getting paid this week so a large chunk of $$ got transferred into my checking, today, in anticipation of going out on Friday when John Hancock makes its withdrawal.
I still have plane tickets to purchase for November's trip to Florida but I'm going to hold off for another week or so on that one. Thankfully BWI to FLL is rarely ever expensive. ($200 max) And then tickets to the West coast for most of December. Those won't be bought until October.
So, to summarize: I've less than I did in July but I'm still maintaining a "not in the hole" status. I anticipate October will show a more obvious forward movement.

Yikes I haven't updated in almost a month! Things are finally slowing down here now that summer is winding down and we are down to just one night a week for softball. We have another IUI scheduled tomorrow and have to drive 5 hrs for it, so will have some extra expenses with fuel/food. Our HSA has been covering all medical expenses as I had it up to $10K, but now it is down to $6K and with apts every few days it is draining quickly. Trying to stay positive, but after 10 years of trying I have a really hard time trying to have a good attitude.

Not really an update just a "mmm, this is not so bad" moment.
I don't remember what is the name but this month I kinda saw the "benefits" of paying this month bill with last month income, so always having next month equivalent seating in your checking account.
That would not really work for us because while my wife does not believe in credit cards, she will spend everything in our checking.
But this month with being so busy and what not, I forgot to pay our car insurance (1 payment every 6 months). And then I almost missed a few other payments and I got pissed off at myself that I just transferred the equivalent of my wife next paycheck into our checking account and basically paid all our bills for the remainder of the month.
So student loans/credit card, utilities everything paid till next month. And I was like, it would be cool to do that every month: just seat in one day example the first and pay all our bills for the month and not have to worry about anything till next month.
Off course once she gets paid I plan to transfer that money back into savings (or it will be spent). But it is something I am considering: pay all the bills ahead of time and replace the money later on or build up the amount to the point where I could do that.

Living off last month's income is one of the principles of YNAB. So every month on the first I know exactly how much money I have to work with that month and I can pay all the bills that day, do all the savings transfers that day and then just kick back and let the money roll in for the month until the 1st rolls around again.

When I worked at a place that paid once a month most people did that. We didn't have direct deposit and could be on the road on payday. It's a nice buffer.

As MPL knows, I love YNAB. Even though I don't use it according to the rules, that detailed budget looking at me every month works wonders to keep my spending within the budgeted amount.
When I first started using it, I was amazed at all the categories of spending that I actually had. My late DH thought it was rather funny but he went along with it, and it has made my life so much easier ever since. Of course, I always PM MPL when I can't figure out how to do something I want to change.

shanendoah: 9/10/2017 $785 (Goal: $960)
Took some vacation time that included vacation from the internet, and realized today that I hadn't updated here from my last paycheck. My next paycheck will include a 2% raise (only a big deal because it finally takes me into 6 figure category), but as much as I'd like to increase savings this year, I need to focus on getting debt paid. However, I came up with a long term savings goal - as in 11 years from now. 11 years from now will be our 25th wedding anniversary. It is also when everything from our current situation will finally be over and done with. And I've always joked about wanting to retire to the Canary Islands (but I've never been there). So I've decided I want to save around $25k for a 2 week trip to the Canary Islands for our 25th anniversary. (This includes business or first class airfare.) Over 10 years, this would mean about $210/month, so if I can get everything figured out to start next spring, I'll start saving for that.

We had to take my car in AGAIN and I was worried that this would be the end of the road for my car as we don't want to put anymore money into repairs on it....MO went to pick it up and the mechanic said it was a minor part repair and he fixed it for free! He didn't even charge us for the part! I guess our loyal business finally paid off...lol! Just a little bump to savings here. Also we were going to go to Laughlin next week, but our trip ended up getting cancelled as the flight was not full. This was disappointing since the flights, hotel, etc were all free. We decided to book Vegas instead since we already had the time off of work. We have to pay for flights to Vegas, but it was only $200 total for both of us, there and back. So that's not bad. Hotels will still be free. Plus we have $675.00 in free casino play in Vegas, so we should be able to turn the free play into enough real money to cover the flight cost. This was a spur of the moment trip and will be the last one till at least March since MO starts bball coaching in a few weeks.
