I realized that I am either blind or my CAD professor is an idiot. There was something that to me looks very clearly like something broken up with a downward slope. I handed it in and he goes "this is all one plane - it's not broken up." Mich and other engineers, I wish I could take a pic of it now and have you look at it. Because if I am THAT bad at perspective drawing, I need to get a new set of eyeballs and/or quit now. Do you have the AutoCAD file? I have 2014 on my computer, I should be able to open it.

How the hell have I been able to do this job for 10 years?
Because you are a smart person, and can see the whole picture.

If I don't know exactly what a task entails, I assume the worst, putting it off day after day, when tackling it usually takes 1/10th of the time and mental energy that actually doing it entails.

I like silver ware with the wider handle. I am tired of washing silver ware. And housework.
Coping with the changes happening as I age is disheartening.

I realized that I am STUPID when it comes to math. Not in thesilly 'I am so not good at math" way that people claim. I am talking completely math illiterate. I am talking about it took me 30 minutes to figure out math that when I asked for help took that person less than a minute. I had tons of help in school, I had tutors in college and STILL I am stupid at math. How the hell have I been able to do this job for 10 years? Because you're just that ridiculously awesome.

The only way I've been able to do my job is because the math is normally so repetitive. I just need to remember the steps it takes to get the correct answer. If I can't remember the steps I have a cheat sheet. I 've had tons of help also through school but still struggle. It's like I'm missing a gene. When someone at work would need say a formula changed, I would check my math 3 times until they were tapping their foot going "give it to me already, I need it now" but I didn't until I triple checked it. I'm down to only double checking now because I can give them the right numbers but sometimes I still don't get why they are the right numbers. I've also got a handy converter app now that I didn't have a few years ago. It saves me from doing a lot of the math I used to have to do myself. Bless that thing. I'm so envious of people that can do math easily, but I don't think it's even possible I could ever be one of them. So anyway, you are not alone and maybe just missing the math gene like I believe I am. Check it out with your mice maybe? See if any of them are missing it too.

I can add and subtract as long as I use my fingers. multiplication is easy for me but if you add letters or turn it into a word problem? bye. nice knowing you. and I cannot divide to save my ass.

Do you have the AutoCAD file? I have 2014 on my computer, I should be able to open it. To me, the top triangular thing looks like two separate pieces, but apparently it's one piece. The heavy lines just mean that there's a sharp edge, not that it's broken up. I don't think I've ever seen a drawing of 2 separate pieces put together. Probably best to assume it's always one piece, and go from there. There is a downward slope on the back of the top of the piece.

I've realized after looking at Jenny's homework that I have no clue what anyone is talking about. In other news I've realized I can do 99 things at the same time and do it flawlessly but I'll only ever get attention for the one thing I did wrong. And I am an idiot to want any kind of positive attention or reward for what I do. I need to figure out how to find peace in my head just knowing I know I did a good job and that's all I'll ever get.

Drama you are not an idiot for wanting positive rewards for the good stuff. I can't imagine all the stuff you are trying to juggle while trying to learn new things and figure out why things aren't working right. They have an awesome employee and they should be very grateful!!

DH said I need to stop looking for praise it's not going to happen that's not how a job works.
Course he's going to be getting a decent raise in exchange for all his hard work.
I will never get that, it's not how my industry works. I accepted that a long time ago.
But I would like if I will never get a promotion or raise or bonus to be recognized for what I do right.
Or at least look the other way when I forgot to change the dates on my weekly productivity sheet. Just cross out the wrong ones and appreciate I did the stuff that matters perfectly.

Maybe because of the kind of work that you do, where the smallest details can have big importance, this was just a reminder to not forget the smallest details? Some workplaces give you all kinds of hi fives and praise for good work, some you only hear about the mistakes.

Maybe. I guess my one review a year is supposed to be my high five. Not that it gets me anything. I'm just tired. In 10 years I've never git a reward for how hard I worked it's just expected and taken for granted. I make a mistake and it's like I killed a puppy. Meanwhile I've worked with some really awful coworkers at times and they got away with murder as I was expected to clean up the mess. Fortunately I have pretty good coworkers this time around. But I am tired of ending up having to be superwoman. I'm not shocked at how much is on my plate that's how it always goes and like always I'll shoulder the burden. It's not in my nature to do anything else. Several collaborators have expressed concern to my bosses that they are going to burn me out and possibly cause me to leave out of resentment. I'm not quitting but I'm certainly running on fumes this week. I didn't need another reminder that I am expected to be 100% perfect.

NomoreDramaQ1015 - do you think it's time to reassess your career? You seem very unhappy recently. I used to work for a university (staff) and identify with many of the frustrations surrounding academia. Is there a way for you to enter private industry, even if it means obtaining additional training or qualifications?

We haven't rebuild our financial house, DH needs kidney stone surgery and daycare is killing us. If we can solve the daycare situation we can move the timeline but at the moment I need to stay put at least another two years. If they would hire someone like they claimed they would I'd be better. As it is I've had a breakdown at work and so has the coworker they shifted a large chunk of my work onto. You'd think two people crying at their desk would indicate something is very wrong. Outsiders who depend on us have picked it up why not them?

The company DH works for has a $3K deductible and $5K out of pocket. On mine we only pay $2K. We don't know yet how many of these surgeries he needs. Doctor thinks one but not sure. Last time it was four surgeries. So I need to hang on at least thru 2017 so I can use the FSA and he'll be covered 100% for the year.

Although I do plenty, at this point in my life (56) I admit, I am lazy too. So if you want to do this, you need to find a pace you can live with over the next X years. Count me in on lazy. In my head, I can sometimes justify it. But, reality , sometimes I am. At 60, I don't like micromanaging people. I didn't like them in my earlier years. I guess I tolerated them a bit better. Now..., if I want your direction on how to do something, I'll ask for it. If someone starts to micromanage... (DH tends to micromanage/supervise), I stop...listen, and walk away. The task may not be completed, but I really don't possess the patience I used to. (Gosh, that felt good to say.)

I realized giant soft.fresh sugar cookies make everything better! Also realized a cookie shop next door to my daughters dance studio may lead to developing diabetes.

I've realized that trying to dye your hair smokey violet out of a drug store box is a really dumb idea!
It mixed with my natural color and the blond to turn into this really ugly grayish red purple mess.
Now I'm spending $$$ at jcp to get it fixed. Thank god it's working.
I'll play with hair chalk from now on if I am tempted by a funky color.

Never been a problem for me. I always know if I've done a good job, which is pretty much always. I know better than the people who would be observing if I've done a good job, so why would I care about getting praise from them? Fortunately, they know it too. All of my rewards are internal. External praise is not only unnecessary and a waste of my time, it is almost an insult. "Why would you think I need that kind of reinforcement? Of course I'm going to do a good job, so get out of my way and let me do it!" Life is a lot simpler when you stop allowing other people control over parts of it. But then I have always been ruled by logic rather than emotion. Good luck.

I don't need praise to do my job. In reality, we get and give review comments, which is typically a list of what we got wrong or things we failed to consider. We don't get praise for all we did right.
That said, we do get regular raises and bonuses, which is huge for me as I'm more motivated by money than external praise. But an occasional small word of thanks for working so many hours, staying late, or taking the lead on a difficult project or client does go a long way to tiding one over until the monetary rewards come in. I can see how it would be disheartening if there was no extra monetary rewards, no appreciation, and nitpicking over minor details.

Through this whole debacle with my daughter, I've realized that I am way more of a planner/uncomfortable with change than I ever thought.
I will create or execute a plan for just about any challenge possible. The plan is me working 80 hour weeks for 3 months? No problem. The plan is me living in a 8x8 room with a sick 4 year old? No worries. Everything will be fine as long as we all stick to the plan. I've got it all worked out and envisioned and it will all be FINE.
But when someone changes the plan on me? I turn into a puddle of goo and spend a huge amount of time and emotional energy spinning into a state of anxiety trying to figure out what the possible impacts are and how I am ever, ever going to survive. Even the potential of someone changing the plan gets me worked up right now.
In normal life I find it annoying and frustrating when people change plans on me mid-course. During an actual, for real crisis? Puddle of goo.

Along with the "thumbs up" like button, it would've really helpful if we had a "hug" button. I had to like Pants' post when she really needs a hug.
Or, a 2x4 to beat anyone who even simply suggests changing her plan.

I've come to grips with the fact that I am the hardest working lazy person in the world. That said, while I like planning, I can turn on a dime if plans change and never be phased by it. This is of great help in preserving my laziness
