This whole school thing has made me realize three things: 1) I have little to no ability to envision 2-D objects as 3-D. As you can imagine, it's causing some problems in my work. 2) I had forgotten how much I suck at word problems. I don't suck at actual math, so just give me the damn numbers and I'll find the solution! 3) At the very core, I am LAZY. Like if I can get a job as a pizza, brownie, or taco connoisseur... or someone who rates day spas... or someone who watches nature documentaries... or a yoga instructor for people who aren't super flexible or advanced... that would be absolute heaven. So what realizations are you all having today?

At first, I found it impossible.

While I am in a shit slinging mode ......... I DETEST it when people shove problems under the rug, instead of solving the core problem. They know the problem will resurface....but as long as they don't have to worry about it NOW, thats all they care about. Like seriously? Supposedly mature people behaving this way, thinking its not going to come back and bite their ass?!?! What world do people live in!

I am not adjusting to my 40's at all. I'm sick of adulting.
I'm amazed at how I can be thrilled with the simplest things. I know June B. Jones is not Nobel prize winning literature. But, damn, those books make me smile.

So what realizations are you all having today? In my spatial analysis course at collage part of what you had to purchase for the class was a set of snap together blocks (like legos) and assignments were to build the shape in 3d from a couple 2-d elevations. Could you use your sons blocks to get in the habit of looking at a 2-d elevation and physically building it? It could prime the pump to get your brain to see the 3-d.

Dealing with kids choosing college, choosing major, getting first real job, still on my insurance, getting engaged, planning weddings, DD was pregnant, DD had miscarraige, youngest son totaled 2 cars (1 not his fault, no injuries thankfully). If my cell phone rings during the day and it is one of my kids, my first thought is "What is wrong now". And I am proud of my kids and think they have done pretty well for the most part. No arrests (that I know of) or other major issues. 2 have graduated college and youngest should next May.

Although I do plenty, at this point in my life (56) I admit, I am lazy too.
So if you want to do this, you need to find a pace you can live with over the next X years.

MJ,
Do you think your plan to obtain an engineering degree was based on what you really want to do with your life? I have followed your thread and you seem to have some doubts about your chosen path. When this semester is finished, you should reevaluate what you actually want to do. Getting a stem degree and being a single parent is stressful, but is there another career path that you would enjoy? As adults, we all have stress, but you have to decide what is important to you and what is not important.

I am intellectually lazy, and lazy about other stuff too.
You know, I was really good at drafting in Jr. High (won awards and was the teacher's pet), but I don't think I knew what the 3d figure was going to look like at first. I just transferred lines and measurements, and was kinda surprised by the results. You'll get the hang of it.

As adults, we all have stress, but you have to decide what is important to you and what is not important. I was planning to do exactly that. And I think I may have found my plan B. MUCH less schooling for that one - either a couple more courses and a certificate, or (if I really wanted) a 2 year Master's degree program. Would probably go the certificate route.

I don't know what my deal is sometimes.... I know I sound crazy and I have all these huge ideas and dreams, but I guess I'm still figuring out my limitations. I'll finish out the semester as strongly as I can and then go from there.

Things that I realize about myself, I hate incompetence, it just drives me freaking insane. I was sending Revenue Canada pages of math on how I know that, THEY messed up. I got word that they are finally looking into it, so I sent them more pages of math. Yeah I have a little something wrong with me, so damn what! I love being on my own just too damn much, it's awesomesauce to do just whatever the damn fuck I want. I love solitude, just being with my own thoughts, damn flipping wonderful! I gave up on adulting, screw it I'm a three year old evermore. Anyone want to play patty cake with me?

I realized somewhere along the way I lost complete confidence in myself professionally and have no idea how to get it back. I've been to therapy about it before and have the coping techniques but they don't seem to be doing squat.
I go thru the motions but inside I am a hot mess.

DH thinks I am brilliant. It irritates the crap out of him and makes him sad that I don't listen to him.
I said it's not that I don't listen to him, it's that he's not the one I need to hear it from. Does that make any sense?
I'm just not sure how to ask for it from the people I need to hear it from without sound like a stereotypical YM millienial.
The thank you from the animal facility staff meant a lot to me.
I don't merit raises or any kind of bonus, that's not how it works in academia. I try to live by my grandfather's words that if I am still drawing a paycheck and not getting yelled at that means I am doing a good job but that doesn't go as far as it did as I get older.

Of course not. Everyone wants to feel appreciated. My dad always said the way to a woman's heart was to tell her she was smart. Pretty was obvious. He was nothing to look at really but he always got the babes because he made them feel good about their insides not just their outsides.

So I'm heavily considering market research. Not as lucrative as construction/engineering, but decent salaries and job prospects are very good.

I've turned into something of a workaholic. I'm not sure I like that. I never had any qualms about all the things I would do when retired, but now I'm stuck into research/data/programming/etc. and it seems it's all I think about. It is squeezing other things out. It's kind of addictive, and I wonder if I'll be able to stop on time, lol! For me, my workaholic tendencies were rooted in other issues.. Once I addressed those, I no longer have a desire to do more than I really need to. And, also, me working too much damages my relationship with DD1. She already prefers DH. But, she's more willing to engage me if I spend time with her doing her nails or arts/crafts stuff.

I realized that I am STUPID when it comes to math. Not in thesilly 'I am so not good at math" way that people claim. I am talking completely math illiterate. I am talking about it took me 30 minutes to figure out math that when I asked for help took that person less than a minute. I had tons of help in school, I had tutors in college and STILL I am stupid at math. How the hell have I been able to do this job for 10 years?

I spend too much precious time waiting for things to fall into place/the planets to align/other people to get their poop together so I can do my thing.
As I get older, I'm getting really tired of the waiting game.

I realized that I am either blind or my CAD professor is an idiot. There was something that to me looks very clearly like something broken up with a downward slope. I handed it in and he goes "this is all one plane - it's not broken up." Mich and other engineers, I wish I could take a pic of it now and have you look at it. Because if I am THAT bad at perspective drawing, I need to get a new set of eyeballs and/or quit now.
