This thread is only reinforcing my notion that cats rule and dogs, well...stink Not necessarily.
My calico is getting elderly and has decided she dare not pee in the litter boxes. I have 3 cats and provide 3 pans and clean them regularly. The other two cats are fine with them. The calico used to be fine with them.
Then she started peeing on the area rug - area rug went. Then she started peeing on the littler mats, so those went and we're down to hardwoods. Then I caught her PISSING IN THE HVAC FLOOR VENTS.
Yes, you read that right. Something about that nice cool air on her backside I guess.
So - now we have an empty litter pan in the dining room with a puppy pee pad in it. She will condescend to pee on the puppy pee pad, but only once - I have to switch them out as soon as she pees in it, because she won't pee on one twice.
So - our old Beagle was sticky and did love to roll in smelly stuff, but at least she peed in the yard.

Vent away! A few things off the top of my head: Get rid of carpet and get hardwood/tile/vinyl. Anything but carpet is good for pets and their various accidents. Go to Raymour and Flanigan/other furniture store and buy a new living room set. You'll like it and you won't have to spend bazillions of dollars. Our couch and chair was $1200 with delivery. Target and Ikea have nice, affordable home decor. Even Home Goods. I mean, I know you make better money than those places, but ease into the spending, ya know? :-) Throw things out without your spouse seeing. I do this with hubs, just as his mom and aunts do it to his Nana. What they don't know... LOL!!! I worry because H is like super sentimental. And honestly as long as he keeps his shit in his den I don't worry. The garage we need to work on though... for sure. I also have too many damn hobbies that fill up lots of the garage. That is another one of my issues. I ski bike hike run triathlete camp backpack swim ice hockey etc etc and it just goes on and on. Hubs is kind of sentimental/kind of thinks everything is valuable. I threw out so much when we moved! At least I have an excuse when he realizes something was "lost in the move." Do you have bulk trash day or scavengers? I'd put the furniture out with bulk trash or put it out with a sign that says free. Hell, we don't even need a sign. Around here, scavengers start coming around Thursday late afternoon and Friday morning. My old apartment had a magic dumpster; everything I put out was gone in 15 minute. Maybe see if a furniture store will take it if you buy from them. Or if local charitable thrift organization will pick up?

And thank you to everyone responding. I know I sound like a ridiculous brat. I just struggle. You don't sound like a brat. Being an adult is hard, stupid, and boring.

Maybe get cheap new carpet until the dogs pass away and then replace that with nicer carpet at that time? I might wait on the new furniture for the same reason. If you can get someone to help with cleaning, then you could focus on the painting more. I couldn't live with yellow everywhere either, though my five year old would love it. His favorite color is yellow. NOOOO. We did that in the sun room. All the dogs did was proceed to barf and piss all over the new carpet. It's not AS bad as the old carpet but if you are standing in the area you can still smell it no matter how many times I clean it or have the carpet cleaned. It's seeped down into the padding and it's pretty much impossible to get the smell out of the padding unless you rip up the carpet. I spent money having the yucky carpet ripped up and replaced only to end up with "new" yucky carpet that will have to also be ripped up and replaced. When it comes up laminate is going down I don't care how much it costs. I am done with carpet FOREVER.

And thank you to everyone responding. I know I sound like a ridiculous brat. I just struggle. I don't think so. I've realized my condo is making me have the blahs. It's not organized, I can't decide on paints so it's still builder beige, I can't decide I other colors so my rooms are all a mishmosh of shit I've had before. It's just blah. But fixing that means I a) have to stop having the blahs and b) spend money. As a result I still mostly have the blahs. Your house really can set the tone for a lot of crap.

What about renting a storage unit someplace nearby for all the seasonal stuff or sentimental stuff? Might reduce the level of stuff in the garage and with it spread out in the storage unit some you could find stuff easier. Moving the stuff to a storage unit would also be a good opportunity to cull out the stuff you really don't want or need anymore.
You have my sympathy on a cluttery sentimental spouse. That would make me nuts. Fortunately I married someone who mostly likes flat bare surfaces like I do (except for our books) so when the house is clean and picked up, it's kind of at Quaker levels of austerity, which I like. (Now if I could just keep it cleaned and picked up all the time).

And thank you to everyone responding. I know I sound like a ridiculous brat. I just struggle. We're all struggling too, just in different ways.
Like my cat that pees into the HVAC vents. Sigh.
And our two acres of damn grass and fire ant hills and all those flower beds that are more weeds than flowers.
And my master bedroom closet that is too damn small.
And the old master bathroom that needs remodeling, and the kitchen that needs remodeling.
And the screened porch with the 12 foot cathedral ceilings that need washing and then repainting but will just get crappy again in a year.
(Did finally talk DH into hiring a painter, though. Just too many hard things to paint - the porch ceiling, two stair wells that will require scaffolding, the front porch with all the posts that need pressure washed, sanded and painted - we'll bring a professional in when the weather cools - whoo hoo!)

Part of the reason I don't want another cat, is that I have way better furniture now than I've ever had. Cats and dogs wreck up everything no matter how good they are.
My nephew has 3 cats, two pee in the toilet, but there's still cat smell. It's a no win situation with pets, so just love the pet and screw the house.

My DH and I live in a one bed, one bath condo (we are renting currently). Every time DH gets antsy about renting, I point out all the sh!t he didn't like about owning our previous house. Now, I am going to point to this thread for reasons why we don't need to rush into buying again! I mean, he is semi-retired and works from home and bitches about how long it takes him to clean our 1/1. The house had 2000 square feet! And things were constantly breaking and needing fixed and we are lazy to the core and so things weren't getting fixed or cleaned timely and it was annoying. Don't get me wrong - I'm OVER tiny apartment living and sharing a bathroom. I just don't want to actually own a house right now. Again, lazy. Every time we've moved over the last 6 years, we've gotten rid of junk. When we moved out of said house we had a dumpster brought in and we got rid of all sorts of crap. Crap that DH had moved around with him since his teen years. He still is bemoaning all the things he threw away, but then in the next breath looks at our small condo and goes "OMG we have SO MUCH JUNK! Where did it all come from?!" My deal with Dh is that I am not in charge of cleaning/decluttering the house. Mostly because it bothers him more than me. BUT, if he can't keep it to a basic level of clean, I'm going to hire a cleaning service. That always gets him to step up his game, because he says he'd be super embarrassed and feel less like a man if I had to pay cleaners because he can't find time to pick up things. I just shrug - I don't care if he does it or a service does it, but I'm not doing it. Sometimes you don't want to look in our closets though. I swear when he can't figure out what to do with something, instead of assess if we need it and where it should go, he just throws things in the closet. And, well, beware whoever opens the door next

Carpet is mostly disgusting and dirty in my mind, but honestly the idea of vinyl or hardwoods in the basement is so cold and chilly. Why is my brain so confused?

I will happily get area rugs but I will never do wall to wall carpet again.

I have packing tape wrapped around the right side of beautiful Lazyboy leather chair because my a-hole cat shredded it. The chair is perfect in all other respects & super comfy. I threaten her weekly that I am taking her back to the shelter.

Vinyl/hardwoods + throw rugs that can be put in the washer/dryer. I use throw rugs on my carpet because my cat has issues with the litter box in her old age, and it makes things much less gross.

I'm definitely on the 'no replacement' schedule with the dogs. Before I had DD I did dog rescue and that was really important to me in the environment like St Louis where there was a huge huge cultural and society problem with abandoned dogs that I couldn't ignore. In Seattle, dogs are like children - -actually more like spoiled brat children. So the need is not so great. I should be down to 1 dog in the next few years. The really old dog I have had forever and love him but he's had a good life and it's almost time for him. The other dog is my running partner and I've had her since she was 6 weeks old. She's going to break my heart when she dies. I hope I don't replace her. *tears* The other thing is how do you even get rid of crappy furniture I can imagine some of it would disappear from the street corner but literally I need one of those 50000 gallon dumpsters outside me house. Oh boy the neighbors would love me. If I don't want it, not sure anyone else will either.I actually did look on a FB group and found a local woman who will apparently clean for $20 an hour. Spouse said she can live with us full time for $20 LOL. So hopefully she will work out. Call the 1800gotjunk guys. They are wonderful. We use them about once every 6 months for all of the weird shit that's too big for the garbage bin and we don't want to make a special run for. They come and get it and take it way. Did I mention they are wonderful? I second this. I used them last fall, when I was clearing out ready to put my house on the market. They took an entire truck's worth of stuff. Including old tube televisions and mattresses. Basically they happily took all the crap that you can't even donate anymore. And the worst part of my new house is there is carpet everywhere. I mean who he hell puts carpet in the eat dining area? I don't mind carpet in the bedrooms, but that is about it. I've pulled up more than enough carpet in my lifetime to see the crap that hangs out under it.

If carpet is only in the basement, can you just not allow the dogs in the basement? If my dog gets to the point where she pees in my house, the amount of rooms she has access to is going to be limited.
As for the rest of it, I would start purging stuff. Really your furniture has lasted a long time, there isn't any reason to continue using it. It isn't immoral to replace furniture that isn't working for you.

"Most of the rest of the house is hardwood, thankfully. But in a daylight basement it's still chilly in the winter and I do prefer carpet down there. SIGH. But yes, it's a definite solution. "

I can't imagine. Living with DH and DS who apparently didn't always pay attention while peeing, I can't imagine what the carpet around the toilet would start smelling like.
With DH and myself having dust allergies and the house having a boy plus anywhere from 1 to 3 cats and a beagle, hardwoods and tile everywhere are almost mandatory.

When my parents bought their house in 1977 the hall bath was carpeted. Then the toilet overflowed. That was disgusting. They had the carpet replaced with vinyl.

We bought our house from 90 something year olds (the realtor was seriously scared that if we didn't close quickly we might have to deal with probate) and they had white carpet through the entire house - including both bathrooms. The only place that didn't have the white carpet was the kitchen (which was white tile w/light tan grout) and the garage (which was green astroturf type carpet.)

ME TOO!!!
We moved into this house as 2 adults one baby 2 dogs and now we are 2 adults 2 kids 2 dogs and one cat. It is simultaneously too much and not enough space.
Our furniture is crap hand me downs but between the dogs and kids anything would look crappy within weeks. We've painted 3 rooms but have paint swatches up on walls in other rooms deciding what to paint. How long have those swatches been there? 2 years! We decided to hire a house cleaner 18 months ago, I put DH in charge of finding one. Do we have a house cleaner yet? No. The layout of the house is bad, and I would dearly love to throw $100k at the problems on the first floor and make them go away. We've discussed doing a smaller reno a little at a time, but the problem is that if you do one thing you have to do another and another. For example, when we moved in the living room windows had these terrible covers on top. Take the covers off, there's boards with hooks strapped to the wall. Only they didn't remove them when they painted, so if we took those down there would be random white rectangles above the windows, surrounded by green paint. So we would have to re paint.
Or the kitchen. I would desperately love to do a small kitchen reno. Paint the existing cabinets, knock down the wall between the kitchen and dining room and get a new counter. No moving appliances, no relocating doors or windows. Easy peasy right? Nope. If we take out that wall, we now have a room that is two very different colors. So we have to repaint. And they tiled over the hardwood in the kitchen and put carpet over the living/dining. So would have to pretty much re floor the entire first floor if we spent a little money to make the kitchen more attractive.
Sometimes I start thinking about it and my head just starts spinning and spinning and then I have to start drinking.
tl;dr: I hate my house too.

We've tried different things - but if the dogs are on the main level of the house they will bark at people walking to the park (I live right by a very busy park) and then my across-the-street neighbor calls the cops on me. In Missouri we had a doggie door and that actually worked really well. Sadly I'm afraid if my dogs barked during the day the cops would have to show up. :/ I could keep on the top floor, but then they'll be peeing in my bed. I actually DO have a dog walker come 2x a week.

At least now we don't feel all alone in our cat and dog coated messy houses with ugly furniture! I really didn't want to hear anyone pipe up with "Oh, House Beautiful is coming out next week for a photo shoot!" The outside of my house is quite pretty (except for my decaying vegetable garden) but they would run away screaming at the inside.

Once, when we were touring houses looking for a new one, we saw a house with carpeting everywhere, including in the BATHROOM.
I grew up the UK, carpet in the bathroom was standard when I was growing up. My parents still have carpet in their bathroom. My dearly departed Aunt, moved into a brand new house, pull up the vinyl in all the bathrooms and replaced it with high quality wool carpet (including the power room!). Luckily, this revolting habit of shoving carpet in bathrooms seems to be more of a generational thing. Non of my siblings will tolerate a carpeted bathroom, thank goodness. I mean it could be worse. At least there wasn't carpet in the kitchen. And when I was growing up that was a thing too!

Haha. Hubs' grandparents' house has carpet halfway up the bathroom wall. It, uh, muffles sounds, at least.

I will say that this discussion has made me feel much better in general knowing that other people struggle with their pets.
In my old house, my family room was a nightmare because I had a dog that couldn't distinguish between inside and outside. I was so embarrassed that I wouldn't let anyone into that area. I didn't have the furnace serviced for five years because I didn't want anyone to have to walk through the stinky area. Before I sold my house I spent quite a lot of time crate training my dog, and then quite a lot of money replacing flooring and refinishing the hardwood floors. My biggest regret is that I didn't do that work sooner. Because I felt so much better living in a space that I thought looked and felt nice and clean.

No, we don't walk away. But when we're holding on to something precious, we run.

It's not about the house. And I'm really sorry you're going through this right now. Vent away. It's not? I mean... I think it is. I mean some of it is about spouse being disorganized and that is frustrating. And some of it is about old smelly dogs, but..... am I not being introspective enough?? it's one person trying to keep up with another adult, pets and multiple kids. On top of working full time.

In all fairness, his job is more time-intensive than mine. And we really just have the one child; his other kids don't visit very often (less than 1x a year). The dogs and the stink bother him just as much as me. But to be fair, the dogs are more (or less) mine (I had 2 before we got together). But yeah, the old furniture, he shrugs at. It doesn't bother him. It doesn't really 'bother' me per se. Maybe it's just everything in total. And he's said to hire house cleaners (but yeah, won't do the leg work to get one) - he doesn't care about the cost - that is more me being a miser than him.
