I HOPE IT IS NOT GOING TO TURN OUT BEING ONE OF THE MESS THREADS! PLEASE! I had met a woman who is very religious and very educated and once in youth times refused to marry her 6 years together boyfriend for changing religion. Also giving blood and charitable and never killed a bug. Mother, daughter and friend everyone can wish for. However she is dropping F bomb like there is no problem! I am not THAT religious. But after I went to church for a second time I had decided that I can't pray and curse with the same mouth. I had even told my husband and he had stopped as well. And we were OMG! Every other word was a F one! So just tell me...what do you think abut it?

His point was you're complaining about cursing then turn around and break the third commandment by taking the lords name in vain.

I don't think God cares if you use the F word. I think he cares if you are kind to your fellow humans. You might want to concentrate on the kindness thing.

My Grandmother used to have a sign in her house that said "Don't judge others for sinning differently than you do". Not that I think cursing is even a sin. Bad habit maybe.

Rather than delete posts, I'm going to say this once. tloonya, we do not tell other posters to "stick it" on these forums. It's not acceptable. We've discussed this kind of thing before. There will be no more discussion. If you can't treat others with respect, avoid posting. mmhmm, Administrator

Yes, saying "Oh my God" or "Jesus Christ" in an exasperated way used to be considered the equivalent of cursing.

So, if you interpret it as not, it's ok, even if you're offending someone that feels it is? Maybe Loony's friend doesn't consider cursing to be a sin?

Don't know, but OMG also stands for "Oh my goodness," so it could be how you take it too. Doesn't really matter how I take it. Ultimately it might come down to how you meant it: "Oh My Gosh St. Pete, I really did mean Oh My Goodness every time I typed OMG."

LOL! I think of OMG as Oh, my gosh! I'm sure I'm not alone. Isn't that a "loophole"? Don't people use that expression to get around that pesky commandment?

The "pesky commandment" doesn't mean beans to me. I'm an atheist. I don't use the Christian God's name in vain because I know it can be offensive to others. It's not offensive to me, personally.

Yes, saying "Oh my God" or "Jesus Christ" in an exasperated way used to be considered the equivalent of cursing. Where does it says so? "Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain." - Exodus 20:7 (KJV) To take the Lord's name in vain means to use it thoughtlessly or irreverently. Uttering "Oh my God", "Christ", "Jesus Christ", "God damned" all certainly qualify. Christians should also be diligent to avoid "O.M.G.", "Jeepers", "Jeeze", "Jiminy Christmas", etc., which are euphemisms for the same. "Gosh" and "gee" are borderline. I do my best to avoid them and recommend other Christians do likewise. As for your religious friend dropping the F-bomb, call her attention to Colossians 3:8, Ephesians 5:4, Ephesians 4:29 where Paul admonishes the Gentiles: "But now you also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth." - Colossians 3:8 (AKJV) "Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks." - Ephesians 5:4 (AKJV) The ISV translates the same verse: "Obscene, flippant, or vulgar talk is totally inappropriate. Instead, let there be thanksgiving." - Ephesians 5:4 (ISV) "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace to the hearers." - Ephesians 4:29 (AKJV) Among other things, "profane" means "unclean; impure", "to put to an improper, unworthy, or degrading use". Profane language (that is, profanity) is unfitting for a Christian. The F- M- B- C- and S- words especially are intended to be the most degrading, crass, offensive words in the English language. They don't appear in formal correspondence, and they shouldn't appear in Christians' speech. The same holds true for any slur. "Ass", "damned", "hell" may or may not be profane, depending on how they're used. God cares about what men say, even in their idle speech. Those who profess to follow Christ are supposed to be (at least in part) identifiable by their desire to shun profane things. Remind your friend of this, and of Matthew 12:36: "But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment." - Matthew 12:36 (KJV)

If I see OMG, I assume that the person saying it is meaning oh my god. I am atheist too, but do not say that phrase because I know it can be offensive and because even I think it's wrong to say. I will say OmGosh rather than OMG just to avoid confusion for that very reason.

I'm not one to ask. In high school I'd get into philosophical debates on why I was allowed to say dang but not damn with my mom. They mean exactly the same thing, are used the exact same way and are only one letter off from one another. Yet some unnamed person at some unknown time decided one was bad and one was ok. But if that same person decided screw was the bad word everyone would be walking around saying fuck instead.
The argument was always ended with I'm your mother and say not to use those around me.

My ex had a parent question her having students read a book that included a character saying, "God damn us ...". Her pointing out that the character wasn't swearing but actually calling on God to damn them for the act that they had engaged in went over the person's head.

LOL! I think of OMG as Oh, my gosh! I'm sure I'm not alone. Is 'gosh' even a word? I believe Gosh was the father of Jesus Cripes. It is my understanding that we have all sinned and come short of the glory of God. You can only do the best you can do. Going to church is better than not going, if you go to worship and honor God.
