Someone was selling some kids' stuff on FB yardsale and it was adorable. People asked where it was from and she said "Pottery Barn".
Mistake #1 - I went to PB kids website. Mistake #2 - Looking at their kids' furniture and bedding.
I am not even going to mention Mistake #3......

Hahahahahahaha! My dining room table is from there. I have a lamp in our formal living room and my duvet cover also. My dishes are from there as are my "good" cloth napkins. The girls have some PBK baskets in their rooms.
Had you really never seen their stuff before?

No, I've never been to the store or website. I don't know if I should be proud of the fact or be ashamed but I never really shopped for furniture except over 20 yrs ago in IKEA..... I still have that stuff, so..... ETA: Knee Deep in Water Chloe - is their stuff really good quality or just expensive for kicks and giggles?

Both. It is good quality, but I do think it's overpriced. The holiday decorations are the most over priced. Oh, our Christmas stockings and tree skirt are from there. I bought those after Christmas when they were on major sale. We never buy anything from there unless it's on sale. My table was 40% off because they stopped making them. Stuff goes on sale often.

I've never been to a store or their website either. After reading this thread, however, I am pretty dang sure I absolutely should not start now--especially since I'm starting over with furniture, etc. and am slowly furnishing my house now. I'm having enough trouble finding just the right area rug for the living room without being tempted with all manner of other housing goodies out there.

We haven't updated our furniture in a long time, except to take hand me downs. Still a step up, as the hand me downs replaced garage sale finds. For us it's not an issue of pride/shame. It's a matter of our money only going so far. The kids tell us that they'd prefer to go on vacation and go to their school over having new furniture. Now, if I made the Carl's household salary, we'd probably buy new furniture or spend our money on well-made antiques furniture, because there would be enough money for everything and more. Plus, my peanut. She's not napping anymore, but if she lays down and watches a movie during naptime and ends up falling asleep she pees. (Of course, we try to get a pull up on her..we found out the day DH didn't push it.) She also went through a stage where when she was really upset, she'd pee all over the house on purpose. Upstairs, down stairs, carpeting, wood, she didn't care. This was mostly year from January-March, well potty trained at that point. I think the "peeing when I'm pissed" phase is done. But, who knows what she's going to do next instead of using her words.

I've never heard of the place outside of Carl's posts. I just equate it with "where the rich people shop" and have no interest.

I can not imagine having a white couch, with or without kid.

If you want even more fun, go to their upscale store called Restoration Hardware.
They opened one of these near me in TX and I used to go there and fondle the furniture regularly. Hell, I couldn't even afford a shower curtain!

We sleep on good box springs and mattresses on the floor. Furniture just isn't my thing...
Ie 3k isn't really rich. But it's tickets to Europe. I'd just rather do Europe. We all prioritize.

I'm not sure where there's a Pottery Barn near me (probably one within 20 miles-- it's very urban so that 20 miles could take 30 to 50 minutes to drive) my immediate area is not really the economic demographic for it. Although a Starbucks opened last November - and it's ALWAYS packed (made the mistake of stopping in on a Sunday at 5:00pm for whole bean coffee - and they had 2 employees - the drive thru was 6 deep and there were 5 people in line inside. It's been like that pretty much every time I've been in the store - more often on weeknights after 6:00pm. Who knew people drank so much coffee in the evening... I imagine Starbucks shoppers are also potentially Pottery Barn shoppers... and probably Whole Foods shoppers.
I'd compare PB to WF - pricey cool stuff or hard to find stuff you can't get anywhere else surrounded by a store full of "regular" stuff vastly overpriced. Whole Foods doesn't seem to have "sales".
I use to get Pottery Barn/Kids catalogs. I can see where the stuff they sell on some sort of discount would be worthwhile - even if it was only a 20% drop in price.

My sister worked at Pottery Barn for a while and kept it as a part time job for a long time so she could have the employee discount (It worked at Williams Sonoma too). My DD has a duvet cover and some pillow shams thanks to that discount. I have a couple of throws sis bought me for a low price I'm sure. She has a few household items she got deeply discounted, but didn't keep the couch, she didn't find it comfortable. I've been in the place once. Didn't find anything I couldn't live without.

My son has a queen size bed (I wasn't going to buy him a smaller bed as we had a good extra bed). Pottery Barn was the only place I could find queen sized sheets with patterns for little boys. He loves his Batman sheets. I love looking but buying there gives me twitches.

It's really cute stuff. I got my daughter's crib there and also a set of sheets for her big girl bed. The sheets weren't that much more than Target and much cuter and softer. The crib was $$ but I hate wobbly furniture and at this was solid as can be and converted to a toddler bed so we got 4 years of use out of it.
Other than that -- I don't look because it's just too damn much money and I love it all.
What I don't understand is how Restoration Hardware stays in business.... they are even more expensive than PB.

I looked at "grown up" furniture and their couches are mostly white. I can not imagine having a white couch, with or without kid. That's why they sell the slip covers, which are also very pricey. I love looking at their catalog and my good friend works at the store 10 minutes from me and has offered me discounts, but I refuse to go. Even with a discount and sale, it's still more than I would spend. Instead, I try to find similar items from stores like Home Goods and World Market to get the same look for less. Sometimes it's possible to find the same $400 lamp from Pottery Barn at Home Goods for $40. What did you buy?

Hell, I couldn't even afford a shower curtain! There's a Restoration Hardware Outlet within walking distance of my office. It's older stuff that didn't sell, but most of it is still pretty awesome. Their sheets and towels are heavenly.

Because you can find things there that you cannot find elsewhere. A friend of mine searched all over the area (and dragged me along with her) for cushions for a chair she had. The only place she found them was at RH. It wasn't a matter of finding the right color cushions, but ANY cushion that would fit the chair. We went there as a last resort, and she was desperate for something that would fit and found 'em. It was either there, or custom made (which would have been even more $$).

I just wanted cute girlish sheets without being a pile of pink vomit. And I couldn't feel anything on Amazon in person of course. The ones from PB are nice... I did get a pair of flannel ones from Amazon that had dinosaurs that were pretty cute. I think I had a 20% off code and free shipping, too. I figure, she's only going to need a couple sets of sheets until she's a teenager, why not?

We do have a bed frame but it's one I bought in 1997. DH and I can't get excited about home stuff, either. We replace stuff when it wears out-or later. We just replaced an almost 20-year old mattress. DH picked out the last set of sheets, from Overstock.com. We prefer plane tickets, too!
