Next week is teacher appreciation week. I've purchased 13 baking spatulas and full sized candy bars to put into gift bags with a note that says "thanks for cooking up a sweet education". That's a lie for one of the teachers, but I feel guilty not having DD give her a gift when the other six will get one. Plus, it's a good opportunity to model being kind even when we don't like someone, right? Right?

Depends on if they compare goodies, and how many they get from other students.
In general, I don't believe in rewarding bad behavior, even in grown-ups. But it's a good thing to teach a child to be kind.

As I have said numerous times both my DDs are teachers.
This is NOT something done in aour area/their school districts (different from me & each other).
Might be because it is soo near the end of the school year. Both finish about 5/27.

When my children were school aged, the principal sent notes home asking parents to not send gifts because our district was sort of a 'have and have-nots' mix. She did not want the children who maybe couldn't afford to do anything feel bad. We always took the teacher a plant on the last day of school and I would write a thank-you note for the past year.

I think teachers and former teachers remember these things more than general parents.

This is why (sort of) I like how our school does it.
Each kid gives $10 at the beginning of the school year to the PTA, which is then given to the room moms. The room moms buy the teacher appreciation, Christmas, and Birthday.
Easy peasy.
Personally, I like the notes that come from the kids. Clearly they are most meaningful when the kids are graduating HS. I've had some kids write some really nice things.

Three organizations at our school--Future Teachers of America, the SGA, and the PTA--are doing this next week. We have something every day. Monday- Chik-Fil-A biscuits Tuesday - Coffee/Krispy Kreme doughnuts Wednesday - I forget. (LOL) Thursday - Desserts in the library. Friday - Giftbags and thank-you notes. The SGA has set up in the lunchroom for the kids to write the teachers thank-you notes. They can also tweet them. It is about three weeks until exams (two if you are a senior) so it is a good time to make us feel "appreciated."

My kids school went nuts with this. They had a station in the office for collecting gifts all year. Last week we were supposed to send a check for $2 with each kid for gift cards for this week. I missed that so I grabbed some London truffles for the kids to give their teachers.

I'm not doing anything till the end of the year, this month and next month are going to be expensive and I don't have the extra cash to be throwing around. The school always wants something, money and donations and I feel bad but I just can't this year. I do help out in class and stuff like that though so I do give my time. I would prefer they just ask at the beginning of the year (when we have a bit more money to give) and I would write a check for $100 or $200 and be done with it.

Does anyone know when accountant appreciation week is?
My CPA saves me a lot of time and headaches.

Overall, I think teachers are under appreciated, for what they do and put up with. Good for you, for doing something extra.

Maybe you can tell me when accountant appreciation week is? Or engineer appreciation? Or car salesperson appreciation? None of those occupations have an appreciation day, much less a week. I know teaching isn't a walk in the park. But it is true that most occupations do not receive any type of special recognition for doing a job that can be pretty nasty, such as trash collectors or the custodians who clean toilets for a living. Few teachers would trade their occupation for a custodian job, even if a custodian job paid more.

They don't clean up client's puke. They don't have clients come in and cuss at them. They don't have lawmakers telling them, essentially, that they are living on the teat of government and are no better than folks on gov't aide. They don't try to work with clients for 5 hours a day who aren't fed or don't have proper clothing. I'm also sure that accountants and engineers don't field questions from the parents of their clients, as to why the clients did/or got something that the parents find to be unacceptable. Or help their younger clients change out of pants full of pee because of accidents. I've never seen an accountant work with 25 clients at the exact same time, in a face to face setting. Nor have I seen an accountant try to get three or four clients to solve personal differences in an acceptable way. I also have not seen accountants and engineers work in rooms with environmental issues: mold, poor heating/cooling/ventilation, etc. Trash collectors don't touch trash and recycling. They drive an automated truck that lifts the cans. I also think custodial work is going by the wayside. Around here, it's hard to find people to fill the positions. And, it's an easy place to make cuts when budgets demand it. But, for those that do maid service at hotels, or do some custodial service, and especially bus drivers, yes I thank them. I'm on the bus several times a week, and I thank every.freaking. bus driver. for doing his/her job when I get off. Because I could never, ever do that job. I wonder how many bus drivers get thanked every day for doing their job? I could see nursing being closer to teaching, though. And National Nursing Week is going on right now....I also recall thanking our nurses most of the time. The only one I didn't thank was the nurse that I talked to while laboring with #3. When I described my contractions to her, she told me she thought I could wait, or "leave it up to my best judgement." Turns out, I was between 7-8cm dilated when I got t the hospital. While I did not cuss her out. I did not thank her. She got to listen to all of my f-bombs instead while I was contracting. But I know plenty of other folks that would gift nurses things when working with patients long term.

I brought in stuff for both shifts because day shift would eat everything and leave nothing for night shift. Costco big cakes were inexpensive and much appreciated by the staff. Day shift I would bring back a nice lunch for them from Zoup.

Dammit, I kept meaning to send a letter about DS's NICU nurse - way too late now. But she was amazing with him and all her babies.
I sent his teachers a gift card and the school a monetary donation at Christmas. Maybe I'll have DS make them a card too.

I wouldn't want any of those jobs you mentioned. Nor would I want to be a teacher. I happened to enjoy customer service and felt I was good at it. Not everyone could, or would do customer service. Thank goodness our jobs are not dictated (for the most part). Just because there is a teacher appreciation week, doesn't mean they are all that appreciated. So many parents don't support their kids teachers. I think that's sad. I think teachers are under appreciated. Just my opinion.

But I know plenty of other folks that would gift nurses things when working with patients long term. You,d be wrong about a lot of the things you assume accountants don't deal with. Including dealing with a couple of dozen clients at a time, workplaces that have potential health hazards, etc. Then again, most teachers don't deal with issues that others do. For example, project engineers that I've worked with work most holidays because manufacturing plants try to shut down for holidays, so it's a good time for construction. None of the teachers that I know participate in regularly scheduled 6 AM and 11 PM meetings, or put in 36 hour work days during software implementations. While teaching is an important and valued occupation, teachers aren't the saints that some folks seem to Consider them to be any more than people who work in a lot of other occupations that have some undesirable aspects.

Why is it whenever there is a message that a certain profession or group should be appreciated/celebrated/whatever, people interpret it as a statement that other groups shouldn't be? National Engineers Week was in February; Accounting Day is coming up next week; And Salesperson Day was in March. Even lawyers have a day (first Friday of November). So clearly, they'll give one to anyone...

It's just like if I say I love being a SAH parent, I'm obviously condemning all working parents.

I think teachers perform a valuable service and I appreciate what they do. But can they please stop talking about how they can't wait to be off all summer?

For whatever reason they didn't do this last week at the daycare center, they are doing it this week. I'm signed up to cook pancakes for the teachers on Thurs morning.

I really don't appreciate those of you who have decided this was an appropriate place to speak against the original post. I did not speak out against anyone else. I just thought I'd give the heads up that this was happening last week. If you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all. There was no need for any of the negative posts. Yes, it's a message board; you'll post what you want whenever you want. It's really getting more and more difficult for me to want participate here.

Not only are we accountants largely unaware that there is a day set aside for others to recognize and demonstrate their appreciation for our efforts, but folks who aren't accountants don't seem to know that they are supposed to provide demonstrations of their appreciation, either. Now that we all know about Accountants Day, I'm looking forward to your demonstrations of appreciation (and remember that it might be appropriate to make up for the years when you neglected the appropriate recognition).

Al's last week of school is next week. I thought we would write thank you notes to each of her teachers and include Target gift cards. Or am I on the wrong track? I just figured the last thing a teacher needed was one more Pinterest craft, lol. Anything I could come up with I am sure one of the other moms already did.
