I joined this a couple months ago thinking of posting the gecko and I'm contemplating leaving the group because it's so hard to read some of this crap. People are always posting wanting a free dog or cat, when directed to the humane society it's always the same "they want way too much". What? They're $120 there. You can't get a dog fixed and all their shots for that. Backyard breeders are putting all these "designer" litters on there all the time. When I go to their page I see all kinds of dogs that they must just be breeding randomly, and dogs and cats are just being traded about like old furniture. I'm beginning to recognize some names of people that just want every damn free dog or cat that is on there. Today there is this very sad looking 7 year old chocolate lab on there being given away. They've only had him a week and decided they didn't have enough time for a dog...previous owners won't take him back. Since 9am he's been to TWO different homes and returned. WTF?? Do people put this little thought into these kinds of decisions? First one returned after one hour and said "he was really nice, but my cat didn't like him"...in one hour a lab and cat weren't best buddies? Weird. Second one said her husband came home and made her give back. I feel so sorry for him that I want to just go get him, but then tomorrow there will be another on there and another and I'll have 50 freaking dogs because people are stupid. Rant over.

What should we do with a litter of cats? Stray cat is pregnant but nice cat. She has been hanging out on ISO's porch for a couple months and now we can pet her. She has gotten into the house 3 times and always looks in the door. He doesn't want a cat but now is telling her if she has her kittens and gets rid of them he will have her spayed and she can be his cat. He says she can't have kittens in his house but his porch has possums and raccoons so I am asking where she should have her kittens. I told him she should have them someplace dark and quiet like a closet but he says she can't have them in his closet. I think I will talk him into letting her have a big rubbermaid container of straw or rags in his bathroom but it is between him and the stray cat. He is a softy so she will wear him down and get in the house soon. So when the kittens are 10 weeks old he will want them gone and the cat spayed. Should he sell them or give them away or take them to the pound? If he sets them free he will need to spay or neuter all of them first to prevent littering and they have enough stray cats without adding more. I told him to put them in a sack with a large rock and tie it shut them take them to a little league game and put it on the bench next to him so when people ask whats in the bag he can say a litter of kittens he is taking to the river after the game. I don't want the kittens abused like bait for dog fights or I could just give them out free.

Do any of the shelters in your area have a foster program for pregnant, feral cats? That Facebook group would drive me crazy. I almost unfollowed my cousin a while back after she made a post looking for a new home for her older dog. Then a few weeks later (after someone adopted her other dog), she was posting pictures of a new puppy.

But yeah...no saying to what kind of homes. The humane society would spay/neuter and vet the new owners better, but you probably would have to pay a surrender fee per kitten. Not sure how that works.

I think there are just pet hoarders that hang out there looking for their next fix.

It's Easter weekend. How many little kids are going to end up with ducklings and baby rabbits as Easter gifts. And how many of those ducklings and rabbits are going to be ignored and considered a problem in two weeks.

I bet dogs and cats are pretty tasty. That would fix all these unwanted pet issues pretty quickly.

Lots of rabbits on there this week and lots of people looking for rabbit cages...which reminds me, I think I have one I could sell.

Last weekend my 85-year old Dad confessed that the reason my sister's Easter chick, which grew into an obnoxious rooster, disappeared is that he butchered it while we were out of the house (Mom knew) and it became dinner. He had to call his mother to find out what to do after he decapitated it. I really don't know what to do with this story. I don't dare tell my siblings!

As @athena53 eats Easter dinner this Sunday with her immediate and extended family, she remarks to all at the eining table, "This chicken is delicious. It tastes just like Easter chick did from way back when. Remember, Dad?"
Silence at the table the rest of the meal.

Back in the early 70s, my sister lived on a commune in New Mexico. My parents paid my way to go check up on her to make sure she was alright. One day while I was there, a couple of the commune dogs attacked one of the commune egg-laying chickens. The dogs severely injured the chicken so its head was cut off and it would be part of that evening's dinner. I watched as they gutted the chicken and was fascinated to see the number of eggs inside her from the largest egg to what would have been the next egg laid to the smallest, about the size of a pea. Like a string of graduated pearls within her.

cronewitch - You should actually be able to call PAWS, Homeward Pet, Seattle Humane (not certain which is closest to ISO) and explain the situation. Say there is a neighborhood stray that is pregnant and has started coming into the house. Tell them he is willing to take the mama cat after the kittens are weaned, but can't care for the kittens. The shelters should be willing to pick up mama (with no fee) and care for her and the kittens until they are gone. Kittens are REALLY easy to find homes for, adults less so, so the fact that he is willing to take Mama cat should be a big plus.

I imagine some vets will spay/neuter a bit earlier (depending upon the circumstances) but they probably would not fix a three-month old kitten.

I plan to respect his wishes and not tell my siblings but maybe someday after he leaves this earth I'll tell the tale to the family. To me it seemed like a very practical solution to eliminating a rooster whose morning crowing annoyed the neighbors, but some people like to pretend that chicken is propagated in styrofoam trays at the grocery store.

What? Tell me it's not so. The next thing you're going to tell me is that my veal comes from a gangly legged calf and that cute pink piglets grow up to be bacon.

Well this is the same vet who I asked for several cat tranquilizers so I could give the pills to the two female cats (mother and daughter) who live in my backyard who I have not been able to live trap to get them spayed. These two cats have seen the other 40 plus cats I have live trapped and gotten spayed or neutered and just won't go near the trap no matter how hungry they are. Plus I usually end up with an already fixed cat (or a opposum or raccoon) in the traps. The vet told me I would have to bring the two female cats into his office first for him to give them a physical before he would give me a couple cat tranqs. If I could live trap the two cats I wouldn't need the tranqs. Daughter gave birth to three kittens at the end of February and her mother will probably deliver her kittens next week.

I'm not as convinced that's what I want (if and when we ever get another dog), but the puppies sure are adorable.

Those puppies are SO cute!
We've got the same problem here with the Facebook sites. If they aren't asking for free pets, they're asking for free clothes for their kids, or to "help a friend". Um, these are selling sites. If people want to post something for free, that's how it'll be listed.

Yeah - there was a guy on one of our local buy/sell FB pages who openly admitted that he was looking for free kittens to feed his snake...he didn't last very long before getting completely trashed by the members. Now he's used as an example when someone comes on offering free kittens, as in, "remember that guy with the snake who wanted to FEED his snake with free kittens? Make sure you find out who you are giving those kittens to before you let them go". AND when anyone asks for free kittens, the same people always comment with, "Make sure this person really does want the kitten for their family and not their snake". It's kind of a given any more on a 'free kitten' type post. I'm in on the Corgis too - I'm sure it will take my GSD a while to realize that it is not a cat to be chased but I'm sure they will end up BFFs!
