There is something to be said for working for the man. It's nice to also not work for the man. Exactly.

My dad said working for the man sucks.
He also said self employment sucks.
It's just different types of suckage and depends on which type you prefer.
In his case at least they are his own headaches which he prefers at this stage in his life.
With kids working for the man was of more benefit to him and my mom.

I got a job offer today from my old boss. Same people I worked with at the last company (not the team, but same branch). Base income is similar to what I'm making since insurance would be a lot cheaper. It really comes down to am I willing to give up my business, the possibility of making as much money as I want, and the alleged freedom. Hard choice. Can you ask for more money, better commissions, more pto, etc to tip the scales?

I can be an loa and a processor so I could get a base, bonus, and commission and with the right LO that could be good money. It sounds like they want me to process for several LO's which I dont like, but I should be able to get in with a handful of good LO's. I'm not getting in many new loans right now so this is the time to switch if I'm going to.

That's what I just said to dh. I hit this spot every month where I'm looking at the next month thinking there isn't enough. And then each month enough comes in. But I fired 1 LO, another has been slowly phasing out to the point that she got another full time job, my main LO was upset with me last month, and while he acts like everything is fine now he's only sent me 1 deal that was a rush and incomplete that I ultimately turned down worrying that it would make things worse between us when it went badly. All fine individually, but together it could be the hit to my income I'm always worried about actually happening. I've up'd my marketing to get in new clients but that takes time. If doing both we're an option it would be a no brainer.

The other side is if you go back to working for the man - could make a lot of new contacts for next time you do Rae, Inc.? I was worried about Rukh, Inc. Whenever I got a new boss (every year!) I would always clear that work with them. Then we had to start filling out conflict of interest forms every year and I was worried someone higher up might say I need to choose (and RI is very small potatoes! so choosing RI would not even come close to paying the bills), but 2 or 3 years of the COI forms and no one said boo. But since I report on a form now, did not mention my clients to new boss, and he might say something/have different POV. So far no new COI to fill out in 2024, but I'm sure he'd look at it and maybe ask questions or ask me to choose, but until then I'm just moseying along thinking it is all cool.....I reported on a form, right? and no one has asked since!

That and licensing issues. The new company will sponsor my personal license.

Would paying for your personal license yourself make it possible to continue Rae Inc on the side? Is it possible to reduce or even eliminate COI? I understand your need for constant income and unfortunately, IMHO, RE may be much slower in the next year or so.

I'm definitely leaning toward the job. I got a little more info. 3 weeks vacation, 1 week sick leave. I prefer a pto bank because sick leave is a joke but it's still not a bad amount of time.
I can't come up with a real downside. Which is funny because last week I was saying I couldn't imagine working for someone else again.

I also spoke with another contact who said the company can probably go up on pay too. So that's tempting.

I still need to talk to the operations manager but I'm going to take it. My main client royally pissed me off today and I need a break from him. This seems like the perfect opportunity to get that break.

well, I guess I find myself back here for real this time. I had a call this am with my boss's boss, where I learned that my position has been eliminated, among a big number from our overall organization. I found out later that my boss was also included in that RIF (I haven't spoken with him yet), and one other guy in our immediate group. so that's basically a cut in half for our group. 🤯
my last day is 2mo out, and there's a severance package. so I have a bunch of time...but I need to get off my ass and seriously look for a new spot. I'm taking today to loaf, and I have a Q&A session on Tuesday where I plan to ask about some restrictions that have already been placed on my user accounts to protect IP info. right now, I can't send a recruiter my resume as an attachment. 🙄 I'll check in again soon.

yup, there are so many ways this could have been so much worse. I've decided to give myself this week and weekend to ignore it completely until the Q&A session next Tuesday. I've got some numbers as far as severance goes, and a decent idea of the timelines of everything unfolding - a friend of mine was hit with the last wave earlier this summer. she said the severance lump sum payout took 6 weeks or more, so that's good for me as it won't hit til January and not really mess with my taxes too much. but I have other questions as well, regarding the actual work between now and then, and any handovers.
other names have been getting circulated, and at least I can take some solace in the fact that another one hitting the road with me is the pushy bitchy woman that usually made me want to tear my hair out when I had to deal with her. that made me smile when I heard her name. does that make me a horrible person? lol...

The only bad part is it's 6 hours away in IL, so we have to figure out housing from long distance. Never had to do that before.

Congrats to raeoflyte and minnesotapaintlady the Younger! There are posters in Illinois ... Maybe the best option would be a small AirBnB for when he first arrives? Might the employer have a list of available housing? Maybe some colleagues who are looking for a roommate? My old companies used to have an online "bulletin board".

He claims Springfield which is 6+ hours from us, but I think he needs to clarify that. That's where the headquarters is and the emails he's getting about the position are from Springfield, but I am almost positive the position he applied for was in Rockford...which would be much better (distance-wise). eta: Confirmed. Definitely Springfield.

Nice salary for his first real job out of college! Congrats! It's government and the email said it was a "semi-automatic promotional title" (whatever that means) and that there are also raises coming with the contract. I don't know if semi automatic means it's not guaranteed, but it says after one year it's $6999 month and after 2 years $8124. Not really focusing on the long-term prospects right now. Just happy he's going to be doing SOMETHING.

My job with the federal government came with semi automatic promotions in grades. All a person had to do was get a satisfactory review. The government had a probationary year to fire a person, so if you made it through the year, those promotions came. After those promotions, the next ones were competitive. Hopefully he can find a decent place to live with that kind of income. And he will have to pay for his own food.
