I didn't realize how bad it was. So. My work team situation is a little complicated. I was housed under a large team called: Banana Split.
The banana split team was further subdivided into 3ish teams: Ice Cream Fruit/Fruit Toppings Sauce Toppings We'll say that I work on the Ice cream team.
Folks on the Fruit/Fruit Toppings team are going to be farmed out somewhere else. Folks in the Sauce Toppings will either be farmed somewhere else/lose their job, or become their own team without any leadership.
The problem is we need all three subdivisions of the banana split team to actually make a banana split. We all work together, sometimes closely, sometimes not, to make banana splits.
No one has told me, yet, what the plans are for our ice cream team. Within our ice cream team, we don't know who is responsible for which parts of getting the ice cream to the grocery store. We don't even know if we're supposed to make ice cream. We could be told that we're now change of making Chicago style hot dogs next week without any warning.
So, yes, when you see folks on your team getting picked off, and you can't get straight answers from anyone...trying to leave is better than letting someone else decide your fate for you.

That really bites, giramomma. I agree you're better off grabbing control of your own fate.

New Topic: Resume review.
I have not applied for a position for 18 years. I have access to one (free) resource for reviewing my resume and cover letter. Should I try to pay for a service to also review my materials before sending it in?
Does anyone have any really good resources for resume/cover letter writing?

When I was looking for a job a couple of years ago I got good results by googling "Job title". It had been 36 years since I had interviewed or submitted a resume.

I googled templates based on what I do then added the year so I'd get current ones.
I ended up with a skills based resume that's really helped with getting me past HR who really have no clue what I do.

giramomma: I've been a full time recruiter for my company for over 5 years and have 20 years of HR experience. Here is my professional advice about the Option A/B situation: 1. Definitely apply to Option A. You'll kick yourself if you don't. As I tell people "Just because you apply doesn't mean you'll get an interview. Just because you get an interview doesn't mean you have to take it. Just because you interview doesn't mean you'll be offered the job. Just because you're offered the job doesn't mean you have to accept it". Your goal is to keep your options open. 2. Do not pay anyone to review your materials. I think those services are a waste of time for the most part. For your resume, the main thing is to make sure it is tailored to the job. For example, if "6 years of llama herding experience" is required, make sure it is very easy to see from your resume that you have this experience. The person doing the initial screening may not be overly familiar with the type of work the position entails. If it's not readily apparent that your past jobs are relevant, it's likely you'll get screened out. 3. I recommend Ask A Manager as a resume & cover letter resource (the llama reference in #2 is something I copied from her). 4. Mention nothing about your upcoming surgery unless you are selected for an interview and it conflicts. At that point say "Unfortunately that conflicts with an upcoming medical procedure/recovery from a medical procedure. Could we reschedule it for another time?" They might or they might not. Either way, nothing to gain by disclosing it early. 5. If you feel up to networking and have the time, do it. 6. I realize I'm just a random internet stranger, but I wanted to offer to review your resume if you strip it of all your personally identifiable information. I wish you the best with your upcoming surgery and your job hunt.

Remember a few months ago when I met my big boss for coffee and downloaded several concerns including workload, and she told me to tell folks to be candid on our upcoming engagement survey. Um, results are back and we tanked it. Work life balance satisfaction went from 85% to 35% and now we have the attn of everyone including HR, senior management, etc. And folks know they are not alone in feeling overwhelmed. Now, time to effect real change.
Also interesting that there were enough critiques about my immediate boss that I've struggled with that head honcho told him to take some more management classes and figure out some better ways to manage people. So I was not alone in that feedback. He's just not a good manager and prob unlikely to change, but at least I've found my rhythm with him and know that others notice it too.

I have a second interview with another company tomorrow. I also interviewed with another company a few months ago and the department didn't pay as well. They now have a better paying opening that they've approached me about. Let me know your thoughts.
Job 1- Pay tops out at about $3K more than I make now. However it is an hourly job so there is OT that can be made. Hiring lady said OT is worth several thousand more per year. The line of business would be pretty interesting. I'd tell what it is, but anyone in KC would know the company if I did since it's unusual and only one brokerage writes this type.
I would be required to go to the office every day but a hybrid situation may be available later. The office is 4 miles from my house. A friend works there and loves it. It's known to be a great place to work.
Job #2- This would be 100% remote with a trip to another city (by plane) a few times per year. I would negotiate at least $10K above current salary. No OT. The LOB is the same as what I do now, semi trucks. I don't know anyone that works there. Glassdoor reviews are awful until the past year and are good since. There was one about a year ago talking about new management making a bunch of changes.
I've asked people what they know about this brokerage. The only feedback I go was that they'll insure anyone. This makes no difference in my paycheck but would likely lead to more problem clients and chasing people for money etc.
I'll be asking for a benefits outline from job 2. Job 1 already sent me one so I'll be sure to make sure benefits are as good or better.
Given just this information, which way would you lean? I'm torn. Money is important, but it's not everything. I still need to be happy where I go. I love working at home, but I kind of miss the comraderie of working in an office and already have one friend at job #1. What say you?

Job #1 if all is equal or close. A good work environment is priceless. And if you live close to do in if need be, a good boss might let you work from home a few days per week anyway. You are right, money isn't always the end game.

#1. I take glassdoor with a grain of salt but to go from ALL bad to ALL good in just a year would be a caution flag for me.
How do you know 100% for sure those aren't written by new management to attract fresh suckers?
I'd go with the one you know and have been able to talk to people whose opinions you trust and respect. Never underestimate a positive work environment.

Job 1. Sounds like Job 2 began an internal initiative to improve glassdoor ratings and those are just current HR or marketing employees writing good reviews to boost the company's rating. I've worked at two companies that have done this.
That said, going to the office sucks! 😄

Will OT be mandatory with Job 1? I would try to figure that out. Or, I would ask minimally why there is more work than workers, as that could give you some clues about what kind of employer Job #1 is.
I also am not sure that I would rely on a friend loving the job a 100% reliable datapoint, either.
Assuming the answers to the above two questions are palatable, I would take job 1.

At the hourly rate that I'd be paid for OT, I'll work any OT they want. I work OT now when I fall behind on things for free currently.
The reason for OT is just fluctuations in demand. There are peak seasons. When it is will depend on what LOBs you work. When I did personal lines it was tax season. People would get returns and buy toys to insure. With trucking it's the last part of the year with people ordering Christmas presents and such online. This one would be in the spring/summer.

I just did the second interview for job 2. As suspected they do write anything that comes through the door. However they want to filter out the problem children over time and focus on quality. The guy said he's from a military background so he's had to learn over time to not bark orders. I'm horribly micromanaged here, so what's new. Unless they come up with a unicorn opportunity with lots of money and stellar benefits, I'm going with job 1. It's going to suck going back to the office, but at least I can wear all of my pretty clothes and shoes again. I look like a homeless person now.

I was also talking to the recruiter about job 2. They offer more PTO and free health insurance. I said I would look at it, but I'm still pretty sure I'm taking job #1. They just have to come correct with their offer.

I said I would look at it, but I'm still pretty sure I'm taking job #1. They just have to come correct with their offer. I just got off the call. They're ready for me. A #3 job reached out and I'm still waiting for job #2. Tell me I'm not crazy for waiting until Tuesday to give them a yes or no. I kind of want to see what #3 has to say. I also really do not want to go to the office. They are working on getting people laptops to allow for more flexibility but with a shortage of everything they are basically at the mercy of the manufacturers. They have a 76% vaccination rate which is good, but the other 24% creeps me out. Also, I'm getting ready to walk away from a bonus of several thousand dollars payable in December. She said if I wanted to wait for that it's fine and I can just wait for the next one in 6 or so months. I don't know what to do.

Holy crap. Job offers are like boyfriends. Either none in sight or too many to choose from.
I say $$, WFH, benefits, in whatever order is most important to you.

I wouldn't mind WFH or not if COVID wasn't a thing. Also, my mom locked herself out of the house this morning and I had to go let her back in. Good thing I was working from home. I also was thinking about the time my grandma fell and I had to go pick her up off the floor. Since I was next door it was so easy for me to do that. Maybe I'm just in my head about it.

Tuesday gives you time to think and weigh what is most important to you instead of making a hasty decision today that you will regret later.

The HR lady at job 2 was really understanding. She said the position comes up a few times a year as they grow and people leave/retire. She said if I wanted to wait for the next one and collect my bonus where I'm at now there would be no hard feelings. It about $7K, so it's not a small amount.
Then I think about how there are no bonuses at job 2. They do have OT there and I'm currently salary so I work OT for free now. That would help make up some of the bonus. The salary would be $3K more than I make now, so there is part of the bonus. I don't want to cut off my nose to spite my face so I'm weighing everything and don't really know what to do. I love my job where I'm at, I just can't with my manager.

andi9899 - what did you decide? I'm back on the job hunt. I'm tired of my new boss, who I think doesn't do anything except "strategize," i.e. make lists of everything I need to do. She wants all documents moved into one folder. You want them there? Do it yourself. I don't have time for that when I'm the only one in this department that creates content, and I don't get paid enough when there used to be 4 people here and somehow I do all of their jobs now. And the micro-managing - copying her on all emails I send out for people to review content, etc. Why?!?! Sorry, I just get tired of it all sometimes.

Oh, my. I'm so glad I don't actually work for a living anymore. Just going in and cranking out biscuits, cleaning up after myself, then going home is such a blessing compared to being out in the working world and having to use my brain Being the Biscuit Bitch is almost as good as being a cleaning fairy, except that as a cleaning fairy there weren't other people around bickering with each other, everybody wanting to be a tail wagging a dog...that kind of stuff. Mostly I just close my ears to it when possible and concentrate on world peace, ending the climate change crisis and eliminating hunger

I had a worker on my team tell me that one day. I wanted to train him to move up the team ladder. He told me 'I don't want to think. I just want to do my job and go home. I don't make enough to worry that much about this place.' It was an eye opening moment for me in management. Amazing worker but just wanted to do a great job without stress or additional effort. I could respect that.
