Honestly, I think it's because it makes the year end numbers look better. Still, it's a pricky thing to do.

TheHaitian, if you're looking for operations manager-type positions, school districts have facilities managers and food service managers. While they're not 9-5, they are 6-3 or 4. There is a lot of urgent work that will come up, and sometimes that affects late nights and weekends. You might look on school district website's employment pages for those.

Flutterby - I wouldn't do a hypothetical, but you can think of what they are really asking - is it about leadership? Dealing with a tough team? Etc. I've found its ok to say "I've never been in that situation, but there was a similar time when..." then tell a story that speaks to what the question is about on a broad level.

I was trained to give behavioral interviews, so I know how to answer. First it is ok to say "let me think for a minute". Then come up with a situation they are looking for what you did and what the result was.
And to be honest there is no way to verify what you are saying is true. I am not advocating lieing , but making up part of it if it comes out realistic. Like if you are answering about an employee that you coached to deal with an issue, I wouldn't say they quit (may be true but sounds bad) and I wouldn't say that they became a star employee ( sounds too far fetched) but I would definitely say that they improved.

Why, oh why do companies do this during the holiday season?? Best of luck to your dh. They're secretly hoping for a Clark Griswold moment? Sorry, Taz, this just sucks.

I kind of had a Griswold moment in January of last year. Nobody had received the holiday bonuses that we had be promised by next paycheck during our year end reviews. The owners were being cagey about when we would get them. They were also being cagey about how profitable we had been lately and why they still hadn't hired someone for a position they promised to fill in July. I ended up possibly breaking protocol and calling a meeting with the woman who processed the paychecks. I got her to confirm in front of the rest of the staff that all of our bonuses would be in our next paycheck. We got our bonuses, then I quit, and I still don't have another job yet. I can still pay my bills, and I still have no regrets.

steph08 - Do not disclose. If they make an offer and you accept, that is when you disclose. They cannot legally ask you about this (even if you were obviously showing), but if you volunteer the information, they can take it into account when hiring you.
Once you get and accept an offer, that's when you would share the medical information they need to know. So this. One of my friends just accepted a job offer, and disclosed after the offer - she's due in March. She loses FMLA protection as she won't have been there long enough before the baby is born (pretty sure I have that right) , but the job is a much better place than her current gig and so worth the switch. Agree to not disclose. Just understand that when changing jobs, you may not get some of the benefits immediately. The job I just started in January has a 6 month waiting period for Short Term Disability Benefits (and paid time off is usually covered under STD). At my job, first 6 months of employment STD is only 2/3 of pay and after you have been there 6 months it is full pay. I found this out when I had to have gall bladder surgery 5 months after I started job. Of course even if I had known this in advance I would have changed jobs.

If I get a new job, I can cover my maternity leave with my vacation time pay-out, so I'm not worried about that. My only concern is FMLA won't apply since I won't have been there for 12 months - I just don't want them to fire me!

If you get a job with a good company, they will hold your job. I had my kids pre-FMLA and never knew anyone who got fired. I think the "being replace while on maternity leave" didn't happen as much as people think. And worst case if you go to work for 6 months and get let go, you are still better off than if you just waited until after you had the baby.

If that is how they are going to play my guess would be they will rescind the offer once you disclose. It makes zero sense to hire you, train you and THEN get rid of you b/c you took maternity leave.

I did not want to while she is "open" to the idea more so if it is in the Maryland / DC metro area. She feels she can find a job there while still within the same driving distance to our families.

Anyone heard of "Harris Teeter Supermarkets? Yep. Big in North Carolina. Based there, I believe. Pretty sure they're owned by Kroger but retain the Harris Teeter name. There aren't any around where I live but I remember them as pretty nice stores. Been a long time since I've been in one, though. Where are they talking about putting you?

But it marks to of the major things off: - retail - relocation It would need to be enough to cover both my salary and hers to make it worth it because last time I moved it took her 9 months to find a job. So we are talking 117k, no need to adjust for COLA since it is similar.

Hypothetical situation. Say a person has an interview. Said person is 18 weeks pregnant, which can be fairly well hidden at this point by flowy tops. Person planned to not say anything at the interview unless she made it to second round of interviews or got an offer. Thoughts? Dishonest? Person would love this job, would definitely keep working after having the baby, and probably spend the next 30 years working at this place. Hi Steph08, we had something like that happen recently. The lady interviewed for the position with flowy tops and I could kinda tell she might be expecting but not sure if the bosses did and just never said anything. We liked her, they offered her the job, she accepted. She went on maternity leave 4 months later for about 2-3 months (not sure about benefits negotiated or if she took unpaid). Nobody really seemed upset that she took off so shortly after being hired or for as long as she did (it was fairly standard amount of time for our company). It did sting that she left the company few months after she came back from maternity as we were in a bit of a lurch at the moment, but such is life. Good luck, Steph08!
