Anyone heard of "Harris Teeter Supermarkets? Yes, my ILs love that supermarket. They live in MD but the store is in DE as they live close to the DE.

Ok posted too soon! My wife thinks I should still give it a try I never know... I am on the fence. I agree. It doesn't hurt to interview and talk to them. You can find out more about the position, and it will be low pressure practice for the interview for the job you really want.

Anyone heard of "Harris Teeter Supermarkets? Yes. It's a somewhat upscale store that likes to see employees provide exemplary service. They have stores in my area but I don't normally shop there.

I love Harris Teeter Their prices are roughly as good as or better than Safeway or Giant and the employees generally do go above and beyond, so it's typically a much more pleasant shopping experience. I didn't know they were affiliated with Kroger; the store here is nicer than most Krogers or Ralph's that I've been to. I was impressed with the Wegmans too but that's a 20 min drive instead of 5 min/walking distance. One of the few things I dislike about our new digs is that it's so much harder to make it to Trader Joes

Interview went pretty well, but I was the first interviewee and the job isn't even officially posted yet. I am worried they will forget me since I doubt they will finish interviews until after the holidays.
Supposedly we find out tomorrow about layoffs. 29 people are supposedly getting laid off out of 200 or so.

Fingers crossed for you that your job is safe, steph...and good grief, who announces layoffs a week before Christmas?? That's hideous.

I am going to apply to Harris Teeter, worse case scenario it is a good practice run!
It already have two of my cons going against it so not really moving forward with the best outcome in mind. In other news applied for a few other positions in MA and RI.

Apparently he's called the postdoc who interviewed him at least once a week. Then he got ahold of our PI's number and started calling her too. I am waiting for one of them to say he showed up at their house. I get being eager but when does it cross over the line into stalking?

Ok it's official that coworker is out. There may be appeals and such but that doesn't usually stop us. At this point, it's kind of am open secret that I want the job. My manager may be the only one who doesn't know and that's because she's on vacation!
Next up and where'd I'd like some help:how to approach my manager. She's out today so I'm thinking email.
What I've got so far - Now that the opening is official, I'd like to express my interest in moving in x's position. I'm not sure what your time line or plans for the position are but I'd like to be considered for it. Thanks, Beth

I applied for a job in November within the same agency I’m at, just a different department. I have an interview January 6th. I’m very hopeful since I meet all the requirements and basically am doing the same job duties now, just working with a different part of the community. It also has a lot of doors that will be open to me as opposed to where I am. Where I am now I can’t move into another position unless I have a specialized Master’s Degree, which I have no desire to obtain.
I was just sent the writing assignment of the interview process and could write 1500-2000 words on the subjects, but alas, they only want four or five sentences for each subject. Fingers crossed that I nail this position because I really need to remove myself from the OCD supervisor.

Beth - What you wrote sounds but someone else may have an idea. Good luck!
Sue - Good luck!
DH is working on his resume today and is supposed to give it to one of DD's friend's dad for him to potentially pass on to someone else for a potential position.

Thanks, Beth Beth, that e-mail would be a good start, give your manager a heads up, especially since you say it's an open secret with everybody else. If any of your coworkers talk to her, she's already heard it officially from you. And once she knows, she might want to talk to other people, so they would all be aware. Don't know if I'm making any sense, but I would e-mail her. Good luck!

Working on the writing assignment and the five questions are redundant. Not sure how to answer them differently without repeating myself. Ughh!!

Talked to my 2ND in command. He doesn't think boss is going to move on this until after the appeals are over. But he thought the email was a good idea.

It seems like no one cares about getting back to you when they said they would anymore. I still haven't heard back from a place that I had a 4 hour onsite interview with in March. The job was just re-posted, and I am not sure if either the person they hired didn't work out or if they just haven't found their perfect unicorn candidate yet. A different time, I did end up finally getting an offer in February for a job that I had first interviewed for in December (when they said would make a decision very soon). They brought me back at the beginning of January for second interview, and then I didn't from them until February when they called to offer me the job. Looking back, that should have been a red flag that they were really disorganized, but I still got the job at least.

Wisconsin Beth - Waiting is always the hard part.
flutterby - If you were told you would be contacted by Monday at the latest, I would feel free to check in with them. My best guess is that you may be second choice candidate, and they are waiting for first choice candidate to accept or decline before they contact you, but *shrug*. When they have missed the deadline they have set, you can feel free to send them a quick follow up email or make a phone call.
December layoffs - I know these suck, but the truth is, they have nothing to do with the holidays. This is simply what happens when your company's fiscal year matches the calendar year. They are now having to figure out their new budgets for the next year, which starts January 1. And if they can't afford you starting January 1, they need to tell you in December. It sucks. There are some companies in the Seattle area that are infamous for their poorly done December layoffs. But honestly, this has nothing to do with someone wanting to be a jerk. It has to do with the realities of when their fiscal year ends and begins.

The time that I got laid off, they told me right after the holidays. I could tell the decision had been made a few weeks ago, but I appreciated that they waited until after the holidays to do it.

Our fiscal year starts on July 1, so the calendar year and fiscal year don't match. Ours was more that the first quarter showed the shortfall that we were facing and something had to be done.
I made it through the cuts, this time.

I heard back from boss. She's not sure of time line or plans but DID tell the job title she'd like to change it to. The most recent job listing I could find was from a different dept. and was from late 2012.
Good news is that I still, barely, qualify for it. Better news us that an extended time line gives me time to bone up on things. And the guy who shares job duties and cube space with former guy is willing to loan me computer books and send me the job descriptions he and former coworker had completed.
Still scared but sort of calm, at least for now.

As for me still applying for: Operations manager, general manager, warehouse manager jobs that I feel I can apply to.
Looking into Director of Procurement (supply chain distribution) or Director Purchasing non-resale.
2 mentors that used to be store managers got promoted into those jobs with my current company so looking around.
Fingers crossed!

This is my vent spot:
Haven't worked for old employer since 11/18/15. Asked if I was laid off & she said 'no, it's your choice' but not to come in until she calls me. So I can't apply for UI. She'll fight it if I do and tell them I'm off bc of new GD. Did get a PT gig so I'm fine but not for long term. Have a temp training position starting 1/19 (gov't) but it'll only go as long as elections .... probably primarily to primaries. Not a big deal but she hasn't called me!! So my dumb brain thinks I'm laid off no matter what she says

So my dumb brain thinks I'm laid off no matter what she says Can you translate "GD" for me? While you are at it, could you explain what "it's your choice" means in this context? If she has to call you first (and hasn't), how is that your choice?
I wouldn't let the fact that she would fight UI stop me if you are really laid-off. You will fight to get it. Do you want to work for this company badly enough that you will work essentially on call? You are the only one who knows this. But don't let the old employer intimidate you unless you want to work for them no matter how they treat you.
Pay attention to timelines. I don't know a lot about unemployment because it was 38 years ago when I filed for being fired because of being pregnant, but I suspect there is a time limitation. Don't miss it. The temporary gigs for other companies can just extend how long it lasts.
Good luck!

DS and DIL had a baby 2 weeks ago, hence GD = granddaughter
If I file for unemployment, don't they ask her if I'm still working? I thinks that's what she means by saying I'm voluntarily off. I'm not but I think the temp gig (and it'll only be to primaries + primary and general election) buts enough space between us.
