Hopefully the lab gods smile upon me and I can do this twice.

Hypothetical situation. Say a person has an interview. Said person is 18 weeks pregnant, which can be fairly well hidden at this point by flowy tops. Person planned to not say anything at the interview unless she made it to second round of interviews or got an offer. Thoughts? Dishonest? Person would love this job, would definitely keep working after having the baby, and probably spend the next 30 years working at this place.

I wouldn't say anything and would accept an offer. You are no less of a candidate because of a pregnancy. Granted, you would have maternity leave and other corresponding expenses, but so could almost any other female candidate. What about someone getting pregnant right after starting? They are going to have to pay the same expenses, just a little earlier.

That's so tough! On one hand, someone telling me they are pregnant would freak me out because if I don't want to hire that person (for reasons aside from the pregnancy) I would worry about it coming back as discrimination. On the other hand, it would be good to know. Maybe disclose it once an offer has been made?

Maybe disclose it once an offer has been made? That is the same thing I told my wife, she is currently job hunting while we are TTC and I told her it ever comes to that (pregnant and new job offer) just let them know when you accept the job if you are that far along that you need to tell.

TheHaitian - I think I have suggested this to you before, but seriously, check out APICS. Get yourself a professional certification from you. You are not a "grocery store" manager, you are an Operations Manager, and there are constantly lots of good jobs out there for Operations Managers. Getting the cert and joining the professional organization will help you find those, and show that you understand how your job skills transition. Thank you, will look into it tonight

steph08 - Do not disclose. If they make an offer and you accept, that is when you disclose. They cannot legally ask you about this (even if you were obviously showing), but if you volunteer the information, they can take it into account when hiring you.
Once you get and accept an offer, that's when you would share the medical information they need to know.

One of my friends just accepted a job offer, and disclosed after the offer - she's due in March. She loses FMLA protection as she won't have been there long enough before the baby is born (pretty sure I have that right) , but the job is a much better place than her current gig and so worth the switch.

What did I freaking walk into? So they have a transline they got a year ago from Japan. According to what I've heard Japan verified these mice before they sent them. The former tech has been breeding these things for a year. Well now they want me to verify the transgene is expressing. Why this was not done BEFORE they spent 10 months breeding I have no idea. So that's why I did the Western Blot yesterday and it worked so I was thinking "yay!" Nope, no yay. The postdoc I am working with discovered a problem, human IL-34 protein and mouse IL-34 protein are identical. Which means I cannot tell if this blot is picking up the transgene or not. A negative control is useless b/c the blot will pick up the mouse protein. IDK what this damn mouse is. Supposedly the four females that were sent are homozygotic which doesn't tell me much. I have no idea if the mouse IL-34 gene was knocked out or not. I need to find out if there is original paperwork that tells me that information. If the mouse gene is still expressing all this work they want me to do to characterize this mouse is useless. We'd have to figure out how to use the DNA. The DNA is almost identical between mouse and human as well but there are enough gaps we could possibly make it work. Again WHY wasn't any of this done before they spent a year and a ton of money breeding?! And WHY didn't these people send males? Why did they only send four females. They could have at least sent one breeding pair so worst case scenario I am able to save sperm. As it stands the line is near collapse and they all may be useless anyhow. What a clusterf*ck and guess why I was hired? I was hired to help sort it out due to my experience with transgenetics and mice. Whee!

Ok, coworker is "unofficially - officially" separating from service. This came up via the administration call checking for equipment to be returned.
It'll probably be official either this afternoon or Monday. I'm off this afternoon as is my top two managers so me tossing my hat in the ring will wait until Monday.
I think I'm going to tell boss that I'm interested and see where the conversation goes from there. She may not have to post it, administration didn't for an opening last week so there's precedent on my side. But it boils down to her wanting me in the job or not.

Well just think, you could be working on the project management team of a $600 million dollar project with potentially a $100 million shortfall in spending....and that is if we ever get federal funding. If we don't, then we are $200 mill short. And our first two projects are each about 20% over the conceptual estimate.

I can't wait to get out of this place. They have revamped the rules/rates and not in a customer friendly way. I'm not going to gouge people just because you say so and I'm not pulling bait and switch on people either. I have 3 offers right now and I need to make a decision now, but I keep finding more opportunities now that people know that I'm looking. I can't hold out much longer, but I also don't want to make a bad decision either.

I submitted my resume to PepsiCo last night; no positions just submitted my Resume.
I will keep on looking. I am going to change my classes to online next week. With me job hunting and possibly changing jobs, I think online classes (at least till everything is settle)) would allow for more flexibility.

Good luck Andi with whatever offer you decide. Thanks. I may run all this by my mommy this weekend. Funny, when I was younger I hated her telling me what to do. Now I deliberately ask her.

She wasn't showing when she was face-to-face with them (well, not enough that she couldn't hide it with float shirts). She starts in January, and everyone seems okay with it - this company gives 4 weeks mat leave, so she'll get that, plus 2-4 weeks vacation (I can't recall which it is), but she'll be going back around 6 or 8 weeks instead of the 12 she took with her first. But she's okay with all of that, and happy to be broadening her experience with the new role.

My DH will be in the job hunt now. He was laid off today. Timing fucking sucks.
We had been talking about moving in general so it sounds like he can broaden the search if we get more serious about moving.

I'm sorry taz. There's never a good time to be laid off, but this time of year just makes it seem even worse. Good luck to your DH in his search.
I had my in-person interview on Thursday. It went 100% better than the first one. All behavioral questions, but this time I was better prepared. A couple of them, though, I really had to take a minute to think of an answer. I wonder if it's ok to say, "you know I really can't think of an example of when I've been in that situation, but here's what I'd do if I was?" It's hard thinking up good examples on the spot.
They said they'd let me know Friday (they didn't ) or Monday, so now I'll spend all weekend wondering and hoping.
Oh, and their last question was "why should we hire you?" All I could think of is that little joke:
Reasons why you should date me: 1. You'd be dating me I could go on , but I think I've made my point.
Anyway, I didn't say that but I was tempted.

In many states, it can be done online. Check Out: Indeed.com Ziprecruiter.com and Your state's employment website for job leads.
