What was your experience - better or worse than previous years? I had a very painful and swollen arm and today noticed that I still (one week after the shot) have a palm-sized brown patch around the injection site. Normally I don't experience any reaction at all. Thoughts?
Also, the doc wants me to get the new pneumonia shot which theoretically protects against more pneumonia strains. Anyone had this?

I got mine at Publix for the first time. Previously, I got them at school, but our insurance just authorized getting them at pharmacies. I couldn't even tell I got it on Day 1. I was really impressed. On Day 2 I had this really huge red, inflamed area around the injection site. I've never had that before. And it hurt! The muscle usually hurts, but this was more pain than usual. After five days, it was gone. I've had a sore muscle for a few months after previous flu shots. So it was a different reaction. Not really worse and somewhat better. I keep calling it different.

The boys and I got ours on Tuesday. I had a sore arm the day after. Older son didn't even have that. Younger son had a severe reaction to just the site of the shot that caused intense thrashing and screaming before it was even injected, but was ok by the time we left Dairy Queen. He is not feeling well tonight though. I hope it's not related to the vaccine. He skipped dinner and went to bed at 6pm saying all his muscles hurt. I'm pretty sure he was just really tired from being at the Y all day. Hope so anyhow.

Mine itched for maybe an hour. Might have been sore for a day? I've had others where I was more noticeably sore before.

Got my flu shot last month. Noticed nothing.
Got the senior's pneumonia shot several years ago. No reaction at all.

Our nurse at work said the shots hurt a little more this year because they're quadrivalent or something? Mine hurt a bit more than usual. Went away in a day or so though.

Got mine last month. I think I was less sore than usual.
It can help to take a couple of Advil just before you get the shot.
I have had my shingles vaccine, but not one for pneumonia.

Got a free flu shot couple weeks ago and it was uneventful. Totally forgot I got a shot about 15 minutes after getting it. For the last 3-4 years prior to this I've had a 'lump' and a very sore arm for 3 to 5 days. And one year I felt crappy (ache-y headache-y for a few days) but that might have been cause I was only getting 4-5 hours of sleep a night (got the flu shot 2 weeks before a big upgrade at work).
I did have some sort of illness during the summer - scratchy throat for a while overlapped with stuffed/drippy sinuses and a cough. Maybe a low grade fever - I don't always register that I have a fever if it's 100F or less. Lasted about 5 days - and then the cough hung around for another 2 weeks. No one I knew/interacted with regularly In Real Life was sick with this - and I didn't seem to pass it on to anyone at work, home, or friends. I did know a couple of facebook friends who reported similar symptoms but I saw them several weeks BEFORE we all got sick and then not until several weeks after we all recovered... maybe it had a really long incubation period.
I haven't had a full on flu in over 5 years. I really DON"T want to get it again. It was unpleasant and weird - the being in bed for 3 days and having a high enough fever to see the Little Green Wheels - Bowie sings about in Ashes to Ashes. Just weird. Actually I had the whole Scary Monsters Album playing in my head for like 24 hours... it was weird. I really DON"T want to get the flu again if I can help it.

DH and I took the mist, and we came down with the flu about a week later. I'm still not feeling 100% and it's been 3 weeks.

I got mine yesterday. No pain, no reaction. Not even a little sore.

I have gotten the flu shot for about 20 years. The last few it has been the high dose version. Never had a reaction/problem.
I also got the new pneumonia shot this summer. No issue with that either.

I got the nasal spray for free at work.
I did experience a soar throat and minor cold like symptoms, stuffy nose and a cough. Overall, it wasn't bad, more of an annoyance than anything.
I'm not sure if it was a reaction to the flu "shot" or the fact I spent about 3 hours that week in the car with my boss who was sick.

I got the shot about a month ago and had a sore arm for a couple of days. Got the pneumonia and shingles vaccines too, nut I don't remember any big reaction other than a sore arm for a couple of days.
I got something similar to tiny this summer that lasted several weeks. It eventually went away.

Well, since @patstab admitted that she doesn't get one I guess I will fess up and say I've never had any of the shots. Figured I would be a minority of one if I admitted it here

I got my flu shot last Monday at work. Still have a tiny bruise, which isn't unusual for me. I'm an easy bruiser.

I got the quadrivalent flu shot last year and this year. Last year I got it at the hospital where I volunteer, and it was given by an RN. I didn't feel a thing and had no subsequent reaction.
This year I got the quadrivalent shot again, but I got it at a grocery store with a big, separate pharmacy as I was there and there was no waiting. It was given by pharmacist. It hurt, and the injection site burned a little for several hours.
I think the difference in my experiences might have something to do with the differences in experience and technique between the two practitioners.
I got the Pneumovax earlier this year at my doctor's office. I had no adverse reaction to it at all. It was given by an RN.

I got mine last week in right arm and a tetanus in my left. The tetanus arm ached for a couple days and the flu arm not at all.

I believe it is not unusual to have flu symptoms after inoculation by the flu mist vaccine because the mist uses weakened live viruses. That is apparently why it is not recommended for older people or the very young as their immune systems might not be able to put up a sufficient defense.

Flu shot hurt quite a bit, left me with a palm-size deep bruise for two weeks and a very sore arm (hard to raise it much) for a couple days. I also got the mild flulike symptoms a day or so after. It's quite rare for me to have a reaction like that...glad we went with the nasal spray for DS. Had to go back a couple of days later to get the TB test read and the tech said the flu reaction was normal

Oh yeah, there are definitely differences between who gives the shots and how it feels. Our nurse is a superstar, barely even feel the shot when she gives it to you. My husband's had the pneumonia shot before (history of asthma/pneumonia) and he says that makes his arm hurt. I think my most painful vaccination besides TDAP has been the yellow fever shot... my arm was sore as a MF for several days.

I got the flu shot 1.5 weeks ago. My arm was slightly sore that night and then completely fine. No other reaction.

Well, younger son is pretty sick. He's been running a fever on and off since last night up to 103 and says all his muscles hurt. I know they say you can't get the flu from the flu shot, but he's been perfectly healthy for months, then gets sick 2 and a half days after he gets the shot.

And soon as I'm completely over this cold, I'll wait 10 days then get the flu shot.

I agree that some of the soreness and/or bruising may be due to how the shot was administered. I think some nurses are better at giving shots/putting in IVs than others AND I realize they may have good days and bad days. Some of it may be how hydrated YOU are at the time too. I just always get any sort of shots/finger pricks on my left arm/hand... since I need my right hand to move the mouse so I can earn a living.

That being said, he may have caught a different strain, or had exposure to an infected person just before he got the shot. This silly myth is the bane of our existence. It's a DEAD virus.
"This myth really caught on over the years. Flu shots are made with dead viruses or without any viruses at all. You can’t catch the flu from getting one. Your arm might hurt after the shot. Yeah, I know that, but the fact sheet they gave me said you can get a fever and muscle aches from it. Regardless, the little guy is pretty sick now. Day two of not eating and running a fever.

I am guessing he picked it up somewhere before the shot, because the shot does not give you the flu.
Everything is going around now, and my DD goes to daycare with the kids of two teachers. So those teachers get everything from their students, pass the germs onto their own kids, who then pass it on to my kid.

I had a checkup a week ago and so got both the flu shot and the pneumonia vaccine. The nurse who gave me both was a newbie, but - heck - they have to learn on someone. One of the shot sites ended up bleeding and I still have a stellar bruise there. Oh well. My arm was a bit sore for a couple of days, but no major reaction otherwise.
