$400 off the rack on clearance. I had actually picked the dress out in a bridal magazine and went to many many stores looking for it. I didn't realize the magazine was "last season" and the bridal shops didn't have the dress. I was just about ready to start trying on other dresses when I decided to try one more shop. They had my dress!

My dress was $400, on sale, off the rack, thankfully it was only the third one I tried on!

cael, did you get that beautiful dress with the sash? Did you decide to go with the sash or leave it off?

Well, I bought mine on eBay and it was a dress shop sample. It cost $100 and anonther $100 to shorten. The seamstress told me it was worh $800- $1000. (6 years ago) My daughter is getting married in July and loved the dress so much she will be wearing it and without needing alterations so no cost for her.

Our daughter's wedding dress was $1100 and is beautiful. The wedding has been indefinitely delayed, although will still be taking place in the future, so I hope she'll wear it. It was supposed to be in June. My first wedding dress cost $ 300 in 1976. My second wedding dress cost $ 175 in 2004.

I bought my dress from someone on the Brooklyn Craigslist... it was a $3,000 dress that had allegedly never been worn (the bride, who was very sweet, had purchased 2 wedding dresses and only wore 1). Beautiful, beautiful dress... hand-beaded bodice, the works. The dress cost $200, alterations/steaming about $250. If I hadn't gotten so lucky in finding my dress, I probably would have spent $1,000 or so. I'm a sucker for Vera Wang

My ivory Alfred Angelo gown was $330 - 1980 and a special order with extra length.
My daughter's light gold Maggie Sottero gown was $659 - 2007 and off the rack.

$170 2 years ago, plus $75 to shorten and style
It was the fourth that I tried on, and fell in love. I was really just looking to try different necklines.

$700 4-5 years ago, plus $250 in alterations--I had them change out the zipper for a corset-style back; used leftover fabric from one of the bridesmaids' dress hemmings to make a bright-red lacing cord. Loved it.

It was $300. Now a nice prom dress is about that price (ugh!) I hope DD shops the sales someday when she's ready to marry.

I found the dress I wanted in a bridal magazine and went to Dayton's and bought it for $500 in 1976. According to an inflation calculator, that's about $1,900 now.

$70. But it wasn't an actual wedding dress but a nice white sundress.

I made the first one in 1961 and I don't remember the cost. 2nd one was made for me in 2001 and cost about $350. Only criteria for the dress is it had to be washable. I found both pattern and fabric, and a friend made it for me.
Being an older (60 and dumpy) bride anything off the rack just wasn't my style.

OK, this probably really doesn't count, but it is a money forum. My wife wore her mothers wedding dress, it cost us $15 to have it altered so she could wear it. I don't really know what happened to it after that, and since we don't have any daughters, it may never see the light of day again.
FWIW, our entire wedding cost @ $150. 15 for the dress, 50 for the tux, 60 for the beer, and $25 for the fake flowers. Everything else was homemade (so it did cost someone something), we have venison BBQ's and sheet cake. Couldn't have been money better spent.

$125 off ebay with shipping and handling. $4.00 for the hoops at the Salvation Army. $80 to get both shortened and the bodice let out by a friend of my dad's. I thought about wearing my grandmother's dress, but it was full sleeved 100% satin and we were getting married in August. I would have passed out the alter.

I was fortunate. I borrowed one from a friend of my mom's daugher. We were both the same size. Only had to pay to have it cleaned.

$800 including the matching veil. Then altering, but I don't remember how much that was. The shoes I bought originally were $200, but ended up not wearing them... they're packed away with my dress and if I ever need satin Vera Wang 5" heels I'll get to pull them out ;D

$60 bucks, but it wasn't a real wedding dresses. I don't really like wedding dresses, so I got a normal dress (green and brown) on sale at a department store. And, I've worn it 3-4 times after the wedding as well. My mom insisted on buying, and she would have been happy to spend as much as I wanted, but I had no desire for anything more.

$300 at Davids. I hemmed it myself and it needed no other alteration.

I'd probably not spend more than $500 for my daughter if it was really important to her and she couldn't find something for less.
My first wedding dress came from the prom clearance section in 1988. It was about $100. My 2nd wedding dress started out as a beaded cocktail dress on final clearance for $25 and I added and underskirt to turn it into a mermaid type gown.
I have a friend who bought a wedding dress a few years ago from a seamstress who had a website. I don't remember the name of the site, but you picked out your general style, color and fabric and send her very detailed measurements and pictures or drawings of what you want and she would make a custom gown. The dress my friend bought was "inspired by" a very expensive designer gown, but she wanted no train and a different neckline. The custom dress cost about $500 and she was very happy with it.
In High School, I won an award in 4-H for designing and sewing an evening gown, so I'm sure I could make something for less than $500 if it came down to it.

$600 plus I think $150 for alterations. It is by far my favorite piece of clothing I have every worn and I wish I could have worn it more often.

About $525 (on sale) for my dress, and it ended up needing no alternations - woo hoo!
