Oh and my kids teacher had the class doing crossfit last year - my kid was in insane shape, but again, unlike your boy he loves anything athletic. We have actually had many discussions about how being a PE teacher would be a great career for him (of course once he retires from the MLB that he is going to be drafted into out of high school )

He's never had any blood work at all. That's crazy..My kids get a blood stick at two to check cholesterol. Then again, apparently at 11. You could also look into the WiiFit or some WII sports games. Obviously archery won't do much, but DH has jogged many a time with the WiiFit. You can find that stuff used on ebay for not a whole lot. There's also balance/stretching/strength exercises, too.

Doctors don't know dick about nutrition. But they can order the necessary blood work to make sure there's nothing physically wrong. I realize junk food is cheap but there's a food issue in your home. That stuff is bad for you and for them. Time to shop healthy and donate or throw out the bad stuff. I know you want to feed them together but the bean pole needs to have something more like maybe a protein drink w dinner and the one that needs to slim down and eat healthier needs to deal. If there's no junk food, he can't access it. Lose the salt shaker too while you're at it.

ok I am only on page 1, but darn, we could not have more different kids. My 12.5 year old is 4'7" and only 67 pounds. He is the MOST athletic kid I have ever met. I bought him a step tracker so I could teach him that he needs to eat MORE to gain weight (he is desperately trying to break 70 lbs).
Where they seem to coincide is the gut issues. Mine for a year on and off with no pattern complained of diahrrea and stomach aches. After pushing his doctor for a referral (GP thought he was just "backed up" and needed a good poop cleanout) to a GI specialist he was diagnosed with Chron's disease. So all the food (mine tends to go first for fruit or veggies) was of no benefit because he wasn't absorbing any of the nutrients. Now with a grain free diet he has grown 1.5 inches and put on 3.5 pounds in 10 months.
Push the Dr. for a more complete workup just to assure there is nothing physical going on. FYI - my boy also confuses boredome with hunger, could that be part of the problem? So sorry to hear that, my DH has Chrons it is awful and painful My middle son had a lot of digestion issues sick and what I would call wasting away. We took him off gluten he got better and his Dr recommended a fiber drink and now he has put on a ton of weight gained a few inches and can eat gluten no problem. It was most likely he was just backed up and hard to get nutrients when nothing is moving along.

OK shelby I'm curious, what was the fiber drink? My family is terrible with gut issues. Aunt has celiac, sister is gluten intolerant and son has Chron's.

What about sports like ultimate frisbee or disc golf? Do you have those around minnesotapaintladyDo you have a humane society around he can volunteer at or what about a dog rescue close by? Dogs do need to be exercised....

I just flashed back to the episode in TBBT where Leonard and either Howard or Raj were playing wii boxing. One of them was trying to get up and Leonard is jumping up and down saying "stay down, bitch". Funny stuff.

My DD1 is heavy. We frame everything as good decision making and good choices. We also reinforce whenever we can. She wants red peppers for a snack "That's a good choice!"

I honestly thought the stuff we had for snacks was pretty healthy. We never buy chips or crackers. But I do get big boxes of granola bars, trail mix, cheese sticks and greek yogurt from Sam's Club. That's what most of his snacks are. We'll the hot pockets. That's kind of a recent thing anyhow. Last year almost every day for lunch he had a chicken wrap with a greek yogurt.

Trouble is you can't force a kid to exercise. First things first. Change the diet. Cool it with the milk-hugely fattening and freaking 4 gallons a week? Stop the cheeses and mayo. Even catsup is pretty bad. Milk doesn't need to be drunk after school or with dinner-at all. I can't believe the amount of dairy.

ArchietheDragon my son's soccer coach has them spending half the practice running and doing conditioning exercises - it showed the first game last weekend when they ran the whole game with only a couple kids getting tired. Doesn't have to be football to get him some exercise, simple walking would be a great start. With that said, I am now heading downstairs to the treadmill in the office that I have been ignoring for far too long.
Maybe create a virtual walking tour of the US that you work as a family all year. Start from your home and figure out how many miles it would be to walk to someplace he really wants to go. Then as you walk around daily, log the miles as progress toward your goal destination. Perhaps when you "arrive" at your destination you can do a special activity as a treat (weather dependent of course).

Trail Mix and granola bars have good PR people. DH was amazed when I showed him the back of the Planter's trail mix bag he'd been eating from. The sodium content alone was enough to kill him.
You can easily make both those things on your own and for a heck of a lot cheaper. Trail mix doesn't require use of the stove and there are tons of no bake granola bar recipes floating around on the web. Your son can make them himself, learn to follow a recipe and eat healthy at the same time.
You can easily customize granola bars to pack all sorts of things in them as opposed to the glorified candy bars on the shelf.
I have nothing against the pre-packaged kind I eat them sometimes myself. But if he's having digestive issues it's time to start cutting places. This is a super easy place to cut and not feel like you lost anything.

The kid needs to exercise. He is not going to exercise on his own. MPL does not have the time or energy to force the kid to exercise. MPL does have the ability to sign the kid up for a sport and make sure he is there. The coach can do the rest. Soccer is good for conditioning, but historically, the football coach is the one that makes sure the kids are practicing hard and won't take any excuses. Is the kid going to like it? Hell no. He is going to hate every minute and complain and try to get out of it. But he will be thankful when he is older.

Thanks shelby we spent most of the year getting the Chron's diagnosis with him taking Miralax - clearly the GP was wrong about needing a good cleanout!

Living in the country, being able to exercise at home is important. This website has some daily workouts that put a fun twist on working out. darebee.com/programs/hero-journey.htmlFitness tackers are inspiring to me. I sit all day and having one forces me to get up. I can also track my food which turned out my "not too bad" was way more than I expected. I've had it 4 weeks an lost 4 pounds. I don't think weight lifting is recommended at his age. It has been a while, but my recollection was that 13 was too young to lift as it could damage bone development.
