Work clothes: Dress Barn for blouses and dresses. JCP makes up a lot of my pants - Worthington brand. Other tops are a mix of JCP, Macy's, Kohl's and places like NY&Co, The Loft and TJ Maxx. Cardigans from Macy's August Silk brand and some Old Navy ones.
Casual clothes - jeans and tees from JCP or Kohl's or random graphic tees that I have had forever and tanks from Old Navy.

I'm old, I'm retired and as long as I'm comfortable....I don't give a hoot about fashion!
I buy my work jeans (yard work-5 acre yard) at Walmart...Rustler...generally $10-11 a pr. and they last me for at least 3 yrs. but most of the time much longer. I buy dress jeans where ever I see some that strike my fancy....Macy's, Costco, Sam's...recently. For t-shirts, I go the place that does custom t-shirts and buy from them just plain...$5 ea. and much better quality than in most stores. DH's undies come from JCPenny. My undies come from onehanesplace.com I've been buying from there for about 30 yrs. now.
I've been in a Kohl's once...found a nightgown that was exactly like one I had just bought...same material, color, cut...EXACT...I paid $10 for mine & theirs was priced $38....I won't be going back. If I want something dressy, I head to Beall's outlet...I've gotten some good deals there in the past. Shoes....depends, but if I want comfort and durability....I buy SAS. No more fancy shoes for me...as we age many of us shrink in height and our feet get bigger!

Goodwill. I wear such odd sizes in pants due to having a pear-shaped figure and being five feet tall that I have no desire to spend $20+ for ONE pair of jeans that fits. I might only end up with one pair at Goodwill but it won't cost me much. Although I will say it's odd when I tell people I shop at Goodwill. Is it not fashionable to be cheap in your 20s or something? I found an Oscar de la Renta expressions shirt there in one trip, had the O pin on what I think is a part of the shirt collar, only cost me $4. I feel so weird for celebrating finding stuff for cheap. It's this weird rush of elation I can't really explain.

Do a search for "capsule wardrobe". Learn how you can make 30 different outfits from 10 pieces of clothes. The idea of the 3/4/5 colors is that if you choose red/white/blue, then anything you buy in any of those 3 colors go with whatever you already have. Same for the black/red/white combo.
Also, using this philosphy, anything you must be able to be worn with 3 pieces you already have.
How many times have you bought something because you just love it, only to find you have absolutely have nothing have to wear with it.
Reading on capsule wardrobes you'll find a lot of hints how to reduce your current clothes, shoes, handbags etc. to a manageable amount. I've used this practice for many years, my summer was red/whit/blue and winter was red/white/black. Now that my hair is for grey than anything else, and my skin tone changed with age, I'm changing my colors to softer ones of pink/burgundy/ivory/navy. I'm also building on the colors already in my closet. The rest is eventually going to be removed and donated.

I'm pretty full up on clothes. A lot of them came from resale with price tags still on them.
I spend on my tennis clothes and shoes. The only place where I try to match and look nice.
I have closets full of clothes. Lots of scarves. My best outfits are white denim jacket, vest, shorts and jeans.
Ditto for blue denim. Long black skirt, long white broomstick skirt.
I needed more clothes when I played golf several times a week and bridge. I now use those clothes for casual.

The majority of my clothes are Ralph Lauren. I have clothes from all over including JC Penney and even Walmart.

Goodwill and other thrift shops. I think the last thing I bought brand new for myself was a pair of flip flops in the spring. I have the patience to dig through the racks and I've figured out what size I am in most brands so half the time I don't have to try things on. I wear a lot of dress pants from The Limited and Worthington. They always seem to be some in my size there. I don't have a lot of extra money and I get anxious when I'm in a real store. I can't bring myself to spend even $20 on one item. When I was younger, skinnier, and had more cash I would go shopping all the time. It makes my stomach hurt thinking about all the money I blew

If I have black and gray (charcoal and light) and tan pants/skirts - pretty much everything still goes with them. There no reason to limit myself to only red and white tops. And if you have black bottoms and tops, it's unlikely that they pair well together. It's tough to match blacks. I have a few that may work, and even then it's a black pants and tank with a different color cardigan over top sort of situation. the thought of looking in my closet and seeing an expanse of uniform clothes depresses me. I don't want to look like I work in Target and am restricted to red shirts and khakis.

When I was packing for a cruise and land tour last year my goal was 15 days in a carry on bag. I succeeded on that quest. I looking at capsule wardrobes on pinterest and polyvore I saved pictures of put together outfits then went into my closet to attempt to duplicate them as closely as possible. The colors I was using were khaki, red, black. I managed to do it with most of them as it caused me to really search my closet and shoes to see what I actually had in there. It also gave me ideas of things to put together I'd have never thought about doing.
For me, it's a win win situation, for others, it just might not work.

I like going through my closet and picking out an outfit. Sure, there may be times it's a pain in the ass, but more times than not I like it.

I'm fat. I buy my jeans at Lane Bryant and everything else wherever I happen to land and see something I like. Job 1 supplies me with a uniform so that's covered. Job 2 lets me dress like a bum so I usually wear jeans, shirt and flip-flops. I am not putting on shoes until the first snowflake sticks to the ground here.

I like going through my closet and picking out an outfit. Sure, there may be times it's a pain in the ass, but more times than not I like it. I can understand the appeal of simplicity, for sure. I just think trying to shop for only 3 colors is actually harder than one would think, notwithstanding the boring factor. Again, two reds or two blacks are going to be tough to pull off together. To me, simplicity might be finding the perfect fitting pair of pants and skirts, buying a bunch in black and gray (or shades of brown and tan if that's the color family you want to work with) - and then there is a huge array of tops that would go with either. Easy peasy. Pull black pants out of closet - and all your blue, green, red, purple, white, pink, etc tops go with them. The capsule wardrobe concept seems like an unnecessary and limiting complication to something that could just be simple. Obviously, it must work for someone - but the logic doesn't really support it being easier.

I understand the concept for traveling. Being able to create 15 different outfits from like 6 pieces, but the rest of the time, I don't see how it makes life simpler. Neutral pants work with most everything. But I'm lucky, I've stayed the same size the last 10 years. Even adding one pair of dress pants for work a year the last couple, I have plenty of options.

Capsules can be as small/limited or as big as you want them to be and you can have more than one. I can create several different capsules based on all the blazers I own. DH says I have a problem. People who prefer a minimalist wardrobe would go insane if they saw my closet. On the flip side I would go insane only having 10-15 pieces of clothing in a limited color scheme no matter how many "outfits" I can make from them. I apply the capsule idea to my wardrobe in that whatever I buy has to work with at least 2-3 other items in my closet. If I can't figure out how to create an outfit with it it goes back on the rack no matter how much I like it. Sometimes I do have to get creative. My red stacked high top sneakers with the floral print are hardly what I call a versatile wardrobe item. Yet I can still make three outfits with them as the star by pulling out basic colors in the patterns to create the rest of my outfit. Hopefully this link will work. www.insideoutstyleblog.com/2015/07/before-you-throw-it-all-out-for-a-minimalist-wardrobe-read-this.html

I still don't understand the limiting colors. Black, tan, Brown, grey, navy, etc... All neutral colors, which means I can pretty much wear EVERY color with them. So, I buy a cobalt shirt... I can wear it with any neutral color pant or skirt or Jean. Ditto a yellow top, or orange sweater, or emeralt cardigan. I can't think of anything I buy that I can't wear with anything else. In GENERAL most tops that I buy will go with multiple pants and likely multiple skirts. I don't get why limiting colors suddenly makes things coordinate? Sent from my HTC One_M8 using proboards

Ditto, sarcasticgirl. I wear black or gray pants, skirts, etc for dressy/business clothes (I have a few colorful or patterned skirts as well), and pair them with a variety of different colored shirts and cardigans. It works, and everything can pair with multiple other things. For me, I can also wear black shoes with everything, which makes my life simpler, so I don't go brown, but that's a personal preference.

Shoes is a whole different animal. I have everything from tennis shoes to 4 inch heels to riding boots. This girl in my office always comments on my shoes. I have all kinds of shoes! I love them!
If money was no object, I'd shop every day.

Then no matter what you pull out of your closet in the morning you know it will match with every single other item you own. It'd be like if you wear a uniform to work. Every day you wear kakis and a polo in X approved color. It takes all the decision making and guesswork out of your wardrobe.

Oh, i get that. but whoever originally brought it up to me told me to stick with only 3 colors and the reason was so that you can wear everything with everything else. Being a minimalist is a completely different reason that "Because it makes it possible for everything to coordinate" I was speaking to the reason that was given to me as to why i should only buy three colors of clothing while losing weight and how it simply doesn't make sense.

I just think some people tend to follow capsule wardrobes to the letter.
Most suggest limiting your color scheme to 1-3 options and make everything else a neutral.
Which I'd be fine with for travel but it would drive me insane to be that limited on a daily basis

I buy my jeans from Diamond Gusset brand off their website. They are 100% made in the USA, and the most comfortable pants I've ever had on in my life. Shoes have to come from a store. I have problems with my feet. Shirts can be from any department store. Unmentionables and socks the same.
