DH and I are going to a wedding on Halloween night at a rustic ranch venue and I am clueless about an affordable, age-appropriate (67) tasteful and jaw-dropping costume. I am not too worried about DH b/c he just doesn't do costumes, dang it! One of the grooms is amazingly creative (home and garden were on a national tour this year) so I know the event will be over-the-top incredible. Your ordinary garden variety witch just won't do on this. Any and all ideas will be welcomed. Thanks!

First, find out what the bride is wearing.
Don't wear that color or style. Other than that, you're good to go

Don't wear that color or style. Other than that, you're good to go I don't think that's the issue. ;-) OP, this sounds like it's going to be a fabulous wedding! I am blank for ideas right now. Do you have any ideas or themes we can roll with?

One poster on the event's FB page suggested rustic Steampunk drag but I'm not sure how that works. Rustic I get. Steampunk I get but seems pricey and I don't know how a Medicare-eligible hetero does drag Right now I am leaning to some sort of sleek black outfit with a gorgeous spiderweb lace tunic I saw on Etsy and a black spider fascinator headpiece I googled somewhere. If DH would cooperate I would do the cute sushi costume I saw online and he could be the soy sauce packet. Alas, not a prayer. I may just get him the t-shirt that is sort of a sticky name tag saying, "Hello, my name is I don't do this costume shit" Keep the creative juices flowing my way!

Doesn't sound like a bride is involved, so you can definitely wear white. Is there a theme this pair likes or an inside joke/trip/event you could reference?

How fun! How about something historical, or a masked ball? Do you bear any resemblance to any famous person?

I always love being a fairy. Mostly for the glitter, colorful make up and tulle skirt.

I can imagine Rustic - but not Rustic and Elegant - you did say age appropriate and tasteful and drop dead gorgeous. What if you do something along the lines of a King and Queen or a Countess and a Courtier (suit with a sash and some medals and a stunning evening dress) Or what about dressing to the 9s for a Night at the Opera - fantastic dress of your choice, lots of bling - rhinestones? opera glasses, a playbill (or two), perhaps some large easy to read "faux tickets" - perhaps for an opera with a wedding in it or something that appeals to the bride and groom? Get your hubby in a tux, get him a monocle on a stick or a mustache on a stick and you are good to go! (think Thurston and Lovey Howell from Gilligan's island). Here's some "pairs" ideas = you'd have to figure out the how to and how to get your hubby to play along... What about an Angel (but an odd angel with an crooked halo, well done makeup (red lips and red nails), and strange amount of sparkly bling, and maybe her Devil's tail peeping out from under her dress...) and the Devil (a well dressed man that Tuxe again, perhaps with a "tan" and some faux horns (the Ren Faires make clay ones for Satyrs do a google... I have several pairs that double as 'devil's horns' for when I'm feeling devilish at Halloween but don't want to dress up). Make sure the hubby has some "pricey" looking bling - a gaudy watch or big sparkly tie pin or cuff links (your local antique/resale shops might have this kind of stuff in the 'custome jewelry' section and prices. A variation on Little Red RidingHood and the Big Bad Wolf? Or Fred and Wilma Flintstone? (or Barney and Betty) A cowboy and a cowgirl (or the tackier "county hicks" - Think something from Hee Haw...) Or what about "going to the HOP!" - you get the cute poodle skirt and your guy gets his Letterman's Jacket or Black leather jacket? I've also seen couples with interesting professions - dress as each other's profession - so the hubby donning Nurses dress (and yeah the DDDD bra to go with it) outfit and the wife in a Fireman's outfit, for example. Cross dressing takes a lot of courage but I have witnessed guys pulling off some pretty good Brides (zombies, jilted, and just being a Bride) and even the occasional French Maid... (I have odd friends and relatives and neighbors). Be creative. I can't think of any of the other "couples outfits" that are or could be tastefully done....

Include an interesting hat. A good hat can rescue the most mundane ensemble.

Oh Dear God... just remembered one of the 'couples' winning costumes were the "Country Hicks" on vacation couple... they had blacked out teeth, she looked like Elly Mae and he looked like Jethro Clampett from the Beverely Hill Billies... they had cameras and carried a 6 pack of beer... They pulled it off well.
ADDED: If you can get your hubby to wear a suit (or a tuxe) you could pretty much be anything - a Gangster and his Moll, a Flapper and her Date... any movie star you wish to impersonate (and her Date or Bodyguard?)... he just becomes a 'backdrop' for your wonderfulness.

Just a thought - I was flipping TV stations (I don't have cable) and I bumped into a station showing reruns of Game Shows from the 70's... The Price is Right had audience members in costumes - and many of them were couples with a theme... see if you've the Retro? station?... it was humorous to watch for a bit.

I know it's halloween, but it's still a wedding.
How about wearing something nice and dressed up, but which can also be a costume!
A flapper? Or a woman dressed in 50s garb? Mad men -ish.
And that way, your husband can wear a suit and tie with a hat, and it'll be a couple themed idea.

A nun and a priest! And as a joke, your husband can start officiating the ceremony. Double points if it's a Jewish, Hindu or Muslim wedding!!

Check out The Violet Vixen site! They have a bunch of cool stuff that would be perfect! Steam punk, fifties, ect... Tasteful but fun I know it's on fb for sure. ETA: Also on the internet with a better site.

I love the bride of frankenstein. Maybe your husband can just wear bolts on his neck.

I like the Morticia and Gomez Addams idea. He could be really lazy about it and just wear a suit with a fake (or real) stache!

Since your DH isn't much for costumes- would he go as James Bond (think 1960's Sean Connery version) with you as a Bond girl.

Awesome input peeps, but I am struggling to post my ideas. I tried to do a copy/paste thing from the websites but that didn't happen. I will keep trying. DH is absolutively, positively no costume but is good with the t-shirt I found that says he hates costumes Whatever we wear or don't, it will be an amazing evening of fellowship and love.

Do you have a favorite character from a movie that the grooms would know and like? Especially if that character is glamorous. Great Gatsby, Legally Blonde (toy dog!), Breakfast at Tiffany's, etc.

Eve! All you need is a leaf! Make it a maple leaf so the Canadians could be proud that they were recognized. Dont let DH go Adam! He'd scare the wedding off and there is no need for that.

If you want to be an age-appropriate witch, what about Professor McGonnagall (sp?) from Harry Potter?
