My best-case scenario for N Korea is the military, which is gigantic, gets tired of the antics of the spoiled brat leader and ends up shredding his ass and feeding him in tiny pieces to the palace carp pond.

Then, the military descends into massive internal fighting as different generals try to seize control. Throw in some relatives of the idiot boy tyrant also trying to grab at power like mules after a turnip.

This civil strife rocks a country already downtrodden by decades of poverty and starvation.

China, the big brother, wades in to restore order and to keep control of the nukes, and ultimately they impose their form of government on N Korea - but the civilians, suddenly exposed to life in China, as well as S Korea, wake up and realize they've been fools. They overthrow the communist regime and reunite with S Korea, like the two Germanys.

Fantasy, I know, but I like to dream.

I wouldn't call that a dream. Is more like the worst of the worst that could happen.
It is best that their freedom comes from within and if possible without an overthrow or any quick executions.
The biggest problem to face would be the fact that the general public-NK population at large- has no understanding of freedom or equality.
Would be like taking an abused dog and try to teach him tricks that he would in fact enjoy!

Kim Jung Un was educated in Western Europe so by all means he has understanding of all human basic rights yet he continues to deny them to his own people.
He is right now the one that could lead his nation into the 21 st century. 
Maybe we should just send some type of Boogieman to put some fear into him?

...and even if he did, those fat cats would get rid of him pretty smart.

His only claim to leadership is hereditary....and since it is not a monarchy you'd have to eventually wonder about the wisdom of that.

The county is broke...and any movements for N Korea out of their isolation.... would have to be garnered by S Korea and China

...and it would have to be done very very slowly....or their glorious leader would wind up dead.

He is actually making conciliatory noises....but whether he means it, or not.....who knows.

I wouldn't call him "harmless", but he's relatively stable. His purges are by the ones and the dozens. Stalin, Pol Pot, conducted theirs by the millions.

What's more, US attempts at foreign statecraft have failed so miserably in recent decades that anyone advocating more intervention needs their head checked. I don't know what the North Korean equivalent of ISIS is and I don't want to.

The military leaders are happy, that's why they allow Kim to continue to exist.

The military sucks up most of the money and resources in the country. If you aren't in the military or one of the party fat cats, you're starving in some government run factory, farm, or enslaved in a work camp. The military kind of HAS to keep the system running, because if the peasants ever find out what life is really like for people living in S Korea, and that N Korea hasn't actually been at war with the States for the last 50 years, there will be an uprising among the people that will end with all the senior military leaders hung - and they don't want that.

I have no doubt there are military leaders scheming to replace Kim right now, but trying to figure out a way to do it that won't upset the whole applecart. Kim, like his father before him, have the status of gods in N Korea, and if you're going to topple god, you have to do it with finesse.

My main hope is that the serfs get liberated without launching the nukes. Yes it would be nice if they could politely ask Kim to step aside, and convince all the military leaders to become farmers and for Kim to run a nice cell phone store someplace, and everyone goes on to happy peaceful lives, but realistically, I don't think they'll give up control of their country unless they're dead.

Do you have any other option that would be bloodless and would not require intervention from any outside parties?

I don't believe all the things I read about him.  He is probably a terrible tyrant and the world much better without him.  I just do not believe all the outrageous accusations.   I am not defending him as any kind of person worth defending.  I just think some of the accusations are too crazy to be true.

Yeah I think the most horrifying thing I heard about that regime is if you commit a crime, they arrest you, and your whole family, and you all get sent to work camps, where you do forced (and hard) labor under squalid conditions. Kids who barely knew Uncle Walt end up living their whole lives in work camps because they are related to him.

I understand why the serfs are terrified of the government. I just wish it were different for them.

Yes, my option would be to let him be and mind our own business as far as an intervention is concerned.  That would be bloodless on our part.  We can't save the world, nor should we risk even more death by interfering and possibly starting another war.  As long as there are followers, there will by tyrants.  Human nature in action.  IMHO of course.
