You guys are way off topic! Get back to talking about getting threads to 10 pages! Right now!

Well, I just fundamentally disagree with whatever hickle is talking about in this thread.
Now, start a dog walking service and offer yourself as a babysitter.
@hickle now you need to tell me that you will look into them . . . and several posts later tell me why you can't do babysitting & you'll get another couple pages . . . and then you come back with the investment estimates to start a dog walking service and ask how you are supposed to fun that . . . maybe another couple pages.
Keep working at it and you'll get the rhythm down!

A really long-lived thread has to have several accusations of "intellectual dishonesty".

A really long-lived thread has to have several accusations of "intellectual dishonesty". Now if you were being honest with yourself, you would know that's false.

What are the main things a thread needs to get really popular here? Say more then 10 pages long. Something contentious, forbidden, or lowest common denominator (LCD). LCD topics include financial train wrecks, celebrity train wrecks, my-social-life-is-a train wrecks, my-job-is-a train wrecks, in-law train wrecks, coworker train wrecks, ... Ironically, a thread about an actual train wreck probably wouldn't make 4 pages. An LCD topic has to be a topic that everyone understands, everyone feels qualified and entitled to offer an opinion on, and makes people feel as though they're accomplishing something by contributing, however misbegotten that feeling may be. A contentious topic has to be a topic that everyone understands, everyone feels qualified and entitled to offer an opinion on, and that propels posters ever onward with the desire to reach through their screens and literally strangle their opponents. The secret to creating a successful forbidden topic thread is classified.

Also, there must be some hysterics in place of real rebuttal in the form of "you must hate......" or "you just don't understand.....". Additionally and along those same lines, one must intentionally twist clearly posted words or pick a very minute part of said post, quote it as if that is the entire post, and respond to what they twisted it up to mean. You must also have a couple of posters who post the same thing over and over and over in the hopes that if they say it enough times, it will become true.
It's really very simple.

Sometime people can't reply to a whole post so highlight the point they are talking about. It is an attempt at being specific and clarifying their point. Some of just don't appreciate clarity I guess.

Then there's the tactic of only taking part of a statement out of context on purpose, or being deliberately obtuse. Or maybe making a strawman argument to justify your own position or actions. Or maybe you reply to a response that was directed at another poster or mis-quote someone else so we can spend 2-3 pages clarifying who stated what. And, if that fails throw in a repub or liberal insult or two to really drive home your well thought out arguments. (how many pages are we at?)

Or....you can simply post that you are about the make the stupidest decision ever. Something along the lines of:
I've been corresponding with the guy in prison. He seems very nice and says he is wrongly convicted of a home invasion. I've decided to accept his invitation to dinner to see where it leads. It will have to be someplace relatively inexpensive as I have to pay. He doesn't have any money yet. Oh....and what shoes should I wear with this dress?
Something like that.

IMO. the post has to be about something that impacts the vast majority. For instance, quite a few years ago I asked whether the speed limit should be 55mph across the entire country. Holy Batman - it had SO many "reads" it seemed like everyone was interested and quite a few had something to say about that.
Another way is to post about something that's so freaking bizarre, at first blush it can't possibly be true but after the thread develops and more clarifying details are added, it's so convoluted it couldn't possibly be a made up story.
I think it's time for an update on that crazy neighbor/friend of yours. Yes kent please update us!

[[ have we hit 10 pages yet? ]] No. Maybe we should switch the topic to booze or sex. That usually works.

Ugh. I'm done with neighbors. I had to go tell my neighbor yesterday to keep his dogs out of my yard and that if anyone at my house got bit, he was going to be missing a dog. I'm telling them to turn their music down at night all the time. I told the young guys that live there to stop talking to my kids because they creep them out and a grown man has no business trying to talk to my young girls. And my dad told me that he saw Mama June has moved back so surely her and her abusive husband will be screaming at each other at all hours again. I wish they would just move already.

Another way to get a long thread is to have an open ended thread - one not really about any specific issue, and that isn't exactly "timely". The Job Hunt thread started with me talking about my job hunt here - things I didn't want to say on FB. Considering my job hunt lasted 9 months (though I did not start the thread at the beginning), it had lots of time for me to post. And lots of people to offer me encouragement. And then, because that's where we'd been talking about a job hunt, other people started 'hijacking' (and apologizing for doing so) to talk about their job hunts. And now, it's a pinned thread where anyone who is looking for a job can talk about the frustrations of the process and also look for advice about what more they might be able to do, or if they should even consider that crazy offer, etc.
Similar to the Job Hunt thread is the Updates on Houses for Sale thread on Smart Spending. Anyone in the process of selling a house can go talk about it there. And we post pictures.
Other really long threads really just let us talk to one another, like the anonymous note thread on EE and the interview the next member thread on Smart Spending.

The Captain - Thanks. Today is my first day back at work, well, working from home this week, not actually back in the office until next week. But it means I am tied to my computer all day while it's slow. Summer is the down time for the academic year, and we just completed our budget biennium close (really busy the last few days before I had my surgery). But that means, lots of down time, but still needing my computer on in case staff emails me with a need. And that means you guys get to see me, too.
Now, I really should go write my blog post on the doggies' new collars, just for NancysSummerSip.
