Be sure an make a provision in your will that they are to be repaid said loan in case you check out before the "loan" is repaid. You know how people get when it comes to estates and all that jazz

Shouldn't you have had 1 million in EF money before your wife took a year off? I thought we did (relatively).

I did that once to pay property taxes. I would make a plan (once your DW is back to work) to pay back what you are borrowing over 6 months or a year. I also might let the balance ride on the CC a little longer. July is two months away, how much will two months of interest cost you? Yeah, if I'm going to go totally non-ym, I'd let the balance on the cc ride. My bigger concern for you is finding the space to right the financial ship. Our savings rate pre 3rd kid was 25-30%. Post third kid, it's like 18%. This includes retirement. I think next year, we can start rebuilding our savings. We've spent the past year simply stopping the digging. Next year, my 3rd child will be 4.

I even started washing and ironing my own shirts to save a little money and I have been bringing my own lunch. Sacrificing sucks, too. But are you washing out your baggies? I'm pretty sure that doing that solves financial problems instantly. Why am I the only one that has a problem with you borrowing money from your children? Even if you are currently feeling like you want to curl up in the corner, sucking your thumb and crying, it isn't your money.

You have to do what you have to do to put food on the table. Why doesn't the wife get paid until July? Can one of you get a weekend job for a bit? She has been on maternity leave. She starts back at her job (teaching) at the end of August, but because of the way they pay she said she starts getting her salary in July... She needs to double check this. When my maternity leave was before the start of new year they would not let me do this. Pay started when I was physically back. My checks were then prorated higher for the rest of the year, but they would not pay me before I was physically back because I could always choose not to return...

That will cut into the net profit and repayment loan schedule I've said at my age I would have to give change back from a quarter but Archie is a tad younger so he might be Ok ETA: How about having more kiddos so you will have more to borrow from Sorry my evil twin reared her ugly head on that one!!!

I'm not a big fan of the idea either, because I think it sets an example of money non-management. Sure, poop hits the oscillating device and bad stuff happens, and those are emergencies. This situation isn't one that came about that way. I'm for sucking it up big time, doing without the wants and scaling down the needs and making it work until paycheck #2 begins again.

That said, my kids have extra money ear marked for future activities, not college. When I get a chance, we'll withdraw about 5% to help pay for some of his activities so it doesn't come out of the family budget. He'll still have enough left over to fund a few nice trips he may be interested in taking. I'd prefer that than my first child resenting my third child for a couple of years.

Yeah, and if they told daughters the only way they could go on vacation was if they used their savings, the kids would have said 'have it'... I honestly don't believe Archie and his wife are going to be mooching off their kids for life. Whether this exact 4000 gets put back in those exact accounts, the kids are going to have what they need when they need it...

It is not all doom and gloom in the dragon house. Other than my wife starting to work again, the positives going forward are
1. This month we will be finished paying off the birth kid #3. That is $662 a month. 2. Starting in June (I think) we will be done with kid #2 day care that is $557 a month (until September when she starts again) 3. I just got a raise that will add about $400 a month to cash flow 4. We are supposed to be giving bonuses at work soon, so I should get a pop there.

I raided my kids savings a few times, mainly older son when he was a lot younger. I don't know if it's all been paid back dollar for dollar, but whatever, it was mainly money I had set away for him anyhow. Now he has his own accounts and knows what's in them and manages them himself, so I'm sure he'd have loan docs written up with an outlandish interest rate. He also has an account that is joint with myself and my stepdad that $35/month goes in. It's money I've been getting from stepdad for 30 years or so, my third of what he gets for being shot in Vietnam or something. The other two thirds go to my stepbrothers. Technically younger son isn't on this, but I've kind of turned it into my slush fund for kid things for either of them. A camp not in the budget or a new bike or telescope...

First-year teachers here started at the end of July (we did, too, but a couple of days later) and got their first check at the end of Sept. I can't imagine getting paid in advance.
