When my wife and I got married, we bought a queen sized bed since that's what our parents had. I feel like everyone who got married after us, bought a king sized bed. So 2 questions: 1) What do you have? King or queen? 2) What's the useful life of a bed? Ours is now almost 12 years old so I feel like we're approaching the point where we can upgrade without too much guilt.

We have a queen. Mostly because they are easier to move. And we used to move frequently.

We have a king bed. Even with just us and the cat and dog, it sometimes seems too small!
Hard to tell on this. My beds I have always gotten a lot of years out of them. I had a queen sized bed that I bought in 2000 and it is the most comfortable bed I have ever had, even now. It's now in the guest room as we sleep on a waterbed. This thing ain't EVER gonna die unless I take a knife to it (and even then he'd find a way to patch it). But SO adores it so I deal.

We got a new mattress last year, our old one was only 7yrs old but we had a bedbug issue in the house we lived in which made us anxious about bringing the mattress anywhere, so we just replaced it. (we didn't have bedbugs in our apartment luckily, but figured we'd rather spend the $) This new one is our second mattress/bed, we've always had a queen. I'm not sure we'd get a king - the queen gives us enough room to be on our own sides, but we also sleep cuddled/tangled up and are comfortable that way, so a king would just feel super huge to us lol. We're small enough height-wise, I'm 5'3" and DH is maybe 5'9", and we're average sized. I don't see that we'd feel the need to upgrade to one, at least at this point in time. I think in general a mattress should give you at least 10 years, right?

We have a king, it's about 11 years old by now. It is still comfortable, but I would have NO problem spending on a new mattress/bed if I wanted one.
Sleeping (and other things done in bed) are vitally important to me -- I consider comfort a necessity!!

We have a king. My DH is 6'2" and lanky so a king fit him better. It is almost 8 years old and not quite as comfy as it used to be. We will probably replace it in a couple years.

King, but next time I'll go with a queen (or smaller). I like to snuggle, but tend to roll away in king-sized beds...
Mine is 8.5 years old, no intention of getting rid of it anytime soon.

Mine is 22 years old. Queen sized. I considered buying new this year when everyone here was convincing me I needed one, but I sleep great so have a hard time justifying it. I made my big purchase this year in a new washer and dryer (ok, not new...new to me), so maybe next year.

We have a queen. The mattress is about 7 years old. Still feels good to me, but when the two kids get in bed it feels small. I slept on the couch most of last night.

Our bed will probably last until we die- and then will go to DS. The mattress we replace as needed. About every 10 years.
King size. DH is too hot at night. Sleeping in a queen bed with him is unbearable. Bad enough when DS was younger and he would crawl into bed with us. It was like sleeping in a convection oven.

I have a queen. Sleep number so I won't have to it for a while, but my next bed will be a king whether I get married or not! Sometimes I'll end up scooting away from the head of the bed and then my feet are dangling off. No thanks. I love when in a hotel and get a king.

We have a queen. Would love a king someday, but one wouldn't fit in our bedroom very well. It would be nice to feel like grownups without all the hand me down furniture someday before we hit 50 maybe. . But really, DH is 6-4 and doesn't even fit on the queen that well. His long legs tend to overtake my space. Getting a king at a hotel is so nice! (Even though I tend to sleep near the edge of the bed regardless.) As far as replacing beds, I wouldn't unless they're uncomfortable. No reason to KUWTJ's. It's hard enough to find a bed that's really comfortable, without adding that kind of nonsense.

If you are even toying with the idea of a king, get a king, otherwise you will regret it. It's the hill I should have died on.

We have a king, because of DH. He's tall. It's a Tempurpedic which I feel is a waste of money but he wanted it so okay. It's 5 years old. The cats sleep with me at night and they're hot and furry. I get up and move to other side. They eventually follow. Rinse, repeat.

King. 10 months old. Replaced a 22-year old King. We're not big people but I really like my space when I am sleeping. I am a light sleeper and often pop up wide awake if DH simply rolls over in a smaller bed. The cottage we rent each summer only has a double. I don't sleep the whole time I am there.

Also, be aware that if you change the size of your bed - you'll probably need to buy new bedding (mattress pad, sheets, blankets, comforter, and then pillows...) which can be a big expense - if you like the look/feel of better quality bedding. And then you'll probably need to re-paint the room (to match the new bedding) and maybe need new curtains and a rug/carpeting.... This may also spawn a new overhaul of the Master Bath as well....

When we moved last year, we bought a king bed. We used to sleep in a queen with up to 4 dogs (2 beagles/2 boxers). Now we sleep in a king with two (fat) beagles - and I feel like I have less space! It is nice though!

We have a queen, bought about 5 years ago. DH really wants a king (he is tall) but I have been resisting because I don't want to have to buy all new sheets and blankets. Not to mention the mattress and frame. I suspect we will upgrade to a king in the next couple of years and move the queen bed to one of the empty bedrooms upstairs (right now our only "guest beds" are the pull out couch downstairs and the fold-down futon in the upstairs nook). Our mattress is nice, but even with regular rotation it's got some weird divots and poky spots, so I'm guessing after another couple of years it'll be better suited to occasional guest use. ETA -- useful life of a bed? I would say if you get 10 years out of it you've done well. The 'mattress experts' say to replace it every 8 years, but I think that's similar to the oil change places telling you to do that every 3K miles. IMO unless your back hurts every morning, there's no actual NEED to replace a mattress, but given the amount of time you spend on it, purchasing a new good-quality mattress every decade isn't what I'd call wasteful.

I had a queen size bed when I was a little girl. The first thing I did when I bought my first place as a single, young woman with no pets was buy a king size bed. The queen went into the guest room and these days it's my little girl's bed. I still have no pets and my children don't sleep in my bed. I really don't even spread out and I'm not a big person, but i still want that space. My mattress has a 15 year warranty.

We have a queen. We also have an older home, and a king mattress would take up most of the space in our bedroom.
We've had our mattress for 13ish years. I supposed we should replace it, but we are sleeping fine, and it's supporting us.

We have one of each! We have 2 master bedrooms. DH is retired and I work full-time so we have very different schedules, so we each have our "own" rooms. We make use of both beds, of course.
DH prefers the king due to its size, but it's pretty tall and I have to hop onto it and then hope I don't fall off of it, forgetting it is so tall.
I prefer the queen because I like to wash sheets and comforters often and can fit the queen size in my washing machine. The king comforters and blankets have to go to the laundry mat.
The queen mattress is fairly old, but I sleep on it just fine. I just purchased a padded mattress cover that will provide some extra cushion, though. It's on order and hopefully will arrive soon.

I have a king. I am in constant motion in my sleep and need every bit of a king size bed even to sleep alone.
As far as usage, I've never paid attention.

King.
When you are being intimate, you only need a single. When you want to sleep and stretch out...yeah, King. (what a stupid name).

The service life of a mattress is usually about 10 years. Some last longer (our last 15 year warranty mattress lasted about 25 years).
Queen vs. king? Used to be that bed linens for a king were about twice or 2 1/2 times more expensive than a queen. This would add up when you were talking about a couple of sets of sheets, blanket, and bed spread. Easily $100 more for linens for a king than a queen. Don't know how the price compares today, but it used to be a significant consideration. Also, note greeniis 10's comment about not being able to get king sized bed linens in the washer. Our neighbor has the same issue. Their comforter visits our large front loader washer when it's time for a bath.

Our bed will probably last until we die-
Same here. Our Queen bedframe will last forever, it was custom and hand made in the Alps.
DH and I replace the mattress every 15 years on average (first time after 17 years, second time after 13 years).
Spaces are generally smaller here. I'm not sure a King would fit in our bedroom. It might, but it would be tight, and it would be oversized for the room.
We've slept on Kings in hotels. We always agree that we prefer our Queen. We like to cuddle. :-)
