I've got a California King. It's about 8 years old, I guess and is still in excellent condition. I think a lot depends on who's using the bed. My husband was a big man. He was harder on mattresses than I am because of his weight. He didn't sleep in this bed that often because it was difficult for him to breath in a supine position due to heart disease. I don't weigh much, so don't put as much stress on a mattress as he does.
There's also a queen adjustable bed in mother's bedroom. I slept there for a bit after mother passed to help the cats adjust. They were used to sleeping with her and were rather lost without her.

THANK YOU!
All of these other people talking about King-size beds being so wonderful? It's a stupid size. It's almost square! A California King is 72"x84" (compared to a standard King at 76"x80".) Still plenty wide if you want space between, and long enough to not be near the end of it.
But I guess you can't really expect much from something called an Eastern King.

We started with queen, but when we added large master suite we put a king. Love it. When we are visiting places and have to sleep on a queen it seems small
We were not co sleepers when our kids were little and they were 6-9 when we got the king. Now we let the dogs sleep in the bed - 2 @ 50lbs - so it can get crowded.
If you have room for a king I would get it. When we were looking at houses in Jan a master suite with room for a king was a must. ( or separate bedrooms. Lol). We saw lots of 1960s houses that would not fit a king. The house we bought has plenty of room even with a king.

Like Debt's my queen bedframe will last forever. This one was custom and handmade in Bangkok, in the time that rosewood was still legally obtainable and relatively cheap

My husband is tall (6'3") and we have always had a queen. A king wouldn't fit in our bedroom (at least not if we wanted to have any other furniture.) When we go to my parent's home in the mountains, we usually sleep in the little room with the double, vs. the big room with the king. The king is so big we spend the whole night scooting around looking for each other.
One time someone told me that if you are going to get a king, you might as well just get separate bedrooms - LOL. It seems convenient to me to hold on to that attitude, since we would have to do something drastic to upgrade.

DH and I have been married for almost 9 years, and we just went from a queen to king a few months ago. We were just using my bed that I bought right out of college after I got my first job. At the time I wasn't thinking about being married or even having boys in the bed with me, and a queen bed and mattress was just much cheaper than a king. I couldn't justify the extra expense, and it would have taken up too much room in my apartment. That bed was perfectly fine for us, even with 2 dogs sleeping with us. The mattress lasted 11 years, and the last couple of years I have really wanted a new one, but we were holding off because we are going to move again and our stuff might end up in storage for many months. Eventually I couldn't take it anymore, and when we went looking there was an unadvertised sale going on and we got the serta mattress and box spring for 900 dollars which was a steal. We thought we'd have more room with a king. But really it's just the dogs that have more room. Don't ask me how that happens each and every night. I still wake up squished to one side or almost completely diagonal sometimes. So while the bed is more comfortable it isn't because I have more room. And yes, DH and I are trying to put a stop to the dogs on the bed, but the big dog sneaks up in the middle of the night.

We have a queen, and it's 11 years old. Frankly, I'm surprised it's survived this many moves/storages. It's in good shape, but I do not sleep well. 4 and a half hours of sleep a night is the norm for me. I told Big Sarge that I would like to upgrade to a sleep number bed.

We have a king. We upgraded from a queen a few years ago, but I think we need to go to a split bed like another poster mentioned. DH is a light sleeper and I wake him up when I turn over or move. I think the sleep number bed has two pieces on a king size. I may have to get one of those.
When I travel for work and the hotel only has a queen, That feels really small to me.

When we first lived together and then married, we had a full size bed. We then moved up to a queen size. I just realized our mattresses are 21 years old now! Last year I was having a lot of trouble sleeping because I'd wake up and then not be able to find a comfortable position. My hips were killing me. I didn't want to spend the money on a new mattress, so decided to try a bed topper. Now I'm back to sleeping through the night and no more pain.
I tend to sleep on the very edge of the bed, so there is usually a gap between DH and I during sleep. I'm always hot, so have to keep one foot sticking out of the blankets at all times!

We have a queen. No "bed" though, our mattresses sit on the floor and always have. We don't even have a headboard, that's what the wall is for. I know it seems strange, but we never saw a reason for a bed frame.
We have lived this way for 22 years, although it's our third mattress set.

He says he spends the entire night looking for me in a queen. DH is ~6'1" so is not a small guy, but he'd never had a bed larger than a regular twin until we became a couple. He did grumble a bit when we kept mom's Pomeranian. That little puff-ball takes up WAY more room than our 3 cats that usually sleep with us (the 4th sleeps on the dresser at the food to the bed). It took me a couple of night to realize that the cats sleep on top of DH and I, so they need no 'extra' bed space. The pup wants her own mattress space.

I have a queen that I'm sure has exceeded it's useful lifespan. But, I have a memory foam topper on there that has extended the life of the damn thing.
