So... tell me about "athliesure wear". I work out in shorts and a T-shirt. I have more T-shirts than I'll ever need in this life and am about to pick up another when I get the sign-in stuff for a 35-mile bike ride this weekend. What I'm reading (and seeing in the financial press) is that clothing like the stuff women buy at LuLemon is now being worn while running errands and for other casual occasions outside the gym. Frankly, I hate those ubiquitous yoga pants. Any pants that stop mid-calf make your butt look huge unless you're a heroin-chic Kate Moss body type.
Am I out of touch with fashion- again?

I go to yoga, meet my friend for brunch or lunch (not anywhere fancy), go to the grocery store, etc. I don't think I look bad. My hair is put up nicely in a pony tail and I have some make-up on. I am a size 2 though so perhaps that makes a difference in regards to the yoga pants.

Who knew that the right bra could actually give you a waist? Or that a bit of skin is ok for a plus size gal (yea - I know not your problem - see #1). Even my daughter says one outfit in particular makes me look "badass". I'm also a plus sized girl. I found a nice dress (Calvin Klein) for BILs wedding. It showed skin, but was really tasteful. The cut/style was very flattering. Got me some spanks, and found some products to hide my thinning hair. I felt like a million bucks and it was nice to know my DH still had the hots for me after 19 years.

I have yet to find a replacement for my favorite yoga pants ever, which I purchased from VS when I was in college. The brand name is Moda or something like that - they're cotton/spandex, slightly boot cut, super comfy, and I haven't found any like them again. My last good pair is starting to wear real thin. I don't love the yoga pants at Marshall's (I do love the price though) because they're mostly more spandexy, where these old ones are more cotton jersey. I haven't tried any higher end places because it kills me to spend the money - I like Gap's Athleta for workout and swim wear but they are expensive. www.athleta.com though, if anyone wants to take a look - their bathing suits are what I mostly buy, the other stuff is pricey but I am willing to spend on a good bathing suit that fits me well.

I have yoga pants from VS because they're the only one I've seen in long length! I swoon for the 36" inseam. If anyone knows of any places that has pants of any kind that long I'm all ears!

I am a size 2 though so perhaps that makes a difference in regards to the yoga pants. I know there is a big movement of making athletic wear to be more multi-purpose. I guess that's so you can get a good workout in, give your hair a quick comb, and then meet your friend for coffee afterward. Most of my workout clothes are tanks, fitted tees (I find that fitted - not tight - clothing is key during workouts), spandex capris, yoga pants, and leggings... none of which I'd wear to meet anyone for coffee. I've worn leggings and yoga pants out before but I'm a size 6/8 with a butt, and apparently butts are in so I'm good (or that's what I tell myself ). The above is what is really being pushed. I see the appeal too - you can throw a decent zip-up hoodie or a casual cardigan over that and look decent enough to walk around all day.

I think Moda was a VS brand. Not sure if it's sold anywhere else?

The days when I am getting a good workout in I don't stay in workout clothes for any extended amount of time. They are all gross and sweaty. When I do yoga on Sundays I don't sweat that much though and I wear stuff very similar to the pics MJ posted. I can throw a hoodie on and I am fine for the rest of the day IMHO.

When I go out for brunch after a race, I just want all of the food and some booze. I don't care if I look like shit. Because I do. I'm wearing my medal, my hair is gross, my face is worse, and I want five mimosas right away!

believe me, I'm gross and sweaty after I work out, and the first thing I want to do is strip and shower! I almost never stay out and about after a workout. I see the appeal of the multipurpose workout gear, but it wouldn't make sense for me because I immediately shower and change.

Sizing had definitely changed. When I was looking for tops for my interviews I waa swimming in sone of the size smalls. I'm a 34D, 5'7" and typically a size 10, I should not be a size small! I agree, just based on height, I shouldn't be a small in anything and I often buy small tops.

I find vanity sizing is ridiculous at places like Kohls, JCPenny, etc. I should be about a 6/8, but in those stores it's not atypical for me to need a size 2. I'm not a freaking size 2. It makes shopping so much more complicated than it needs to be.

I agree, just based on height, I shouldn't be a small in anything and I often buy small tops. Same here-based on height alone I should be in much larger sizes than I am. I don't really care what size the tag says, I just want something that fits. And I mostly abhor pants. I need a 36" inseam and can never find them that long. And my thighs are muscular so finding skinny jeans that fit my thighs and aren't too big at the waist is a pain. Nordstrom Rack and The Limited do sometimes have pants that fit me. And someone mentioned Lucky Brand jeans. Those are my current favorites. So I almost always buys things full price because when I do find something that fits, I'm just so ecstatic I barely look at the price tag.

I think the target market for the outfits that you posted, are for people who aren't actually going to work out in them (or at least not work out enough to break a sweat), but more for people who want to look the part. The same folks who workout with freshly applied make-up. At least I couldn't imagine spending all day in sweat soaked gym clothes.

I thought the target market was for people who wanted the comfort, but not the shame, of going to Wal-Mart in their pajamas. Yoga pants are darn comfy.

I've also gotten some comfy pants like the ones pictured a few posts above from WalMart of all places. Danskin brand and they hold up pretty well. I just replaced a pair but I had them for at least 3 years and they got used frequently.

A couple of decades ago, the suburban mommies in my town all had outfits that looked like sweats- pants and matching jackets- but they were in prints, pastels, and other tasteful patterns/fabrics that probably never saw the inside of a gym. My sweats actually get sweat on them. I do go shopping after a workout (or run errands while on a long bike ride) but I look pretty ragged.

I have decided that some people must not sweat. There is a lady who comes to my body combat class in full make-up, hair pulled back in a fancy clip, and wearing one of those workout skirts. People are sweating so profusely that they have to wipe it off the floor periodically so no one slips and falls. I go after work so I am in full make-up but by the time I am done I look like the bride of Frankenstein. Meanwhile, this lady dabs her face with a paper towel and walks out the door almost the same way she looked when she walked in an hour ago. WTH?

Close to it- the ones I saw were typically long-sleeved. I just did a Search on "tracksuits" and "warmup suits" and now the pictures I get look more like genuine athletic wear.

Also wearing antiperspirant prevents sweating everywhere - not just where you apply it. I stopped wearing it years ago and now I'm surprised at how much I really sweat.

She is working out but maybe not quite as hard as the rest of us. I wear really good deodorant so I don't smell bad but I still sweat. One night I kept smelling garlic though and couldn't figure out why. Then I realized it was me . My boss had taken me out to eat Italian for lunch and it was all loaded with garlic I guess I was sweating it out of my body. Weird and a little embarrassing at the time. Now I find it kind of hilarious.

I miss wearing skirts! I ALWAYS looked great in skirts. But I can't seem to wear them around my kids
