DH has been reading Daniel Silva. He was surprisingly on about recent events in Paris and other places. It was written in 2009. Was it a foreshadowing or a how to manual? He read Lee Child's Make Me in 2 days. I read Lee Childs Make Me in a weekend too. I've read all his books. I just finished Room. I picked it based on this thread & enjoyed it very much once I got past the childish grammar. It really bugged me at first. I am going to read The Girl In the Spiders Web over the holiday weekend.

I made a list of books from this thread. Some of them aren't available or something I'm not interested in after reading the summary.
I'm bothered by how white-trashy The Art of Crash Landing is.
Martian is in at the library for me.

I read three books in three days, haven't done that for a long time. It was the "A Child Called It" trilogy, and... wow. There really are not words (horrible doesn't even come close, that poor, poor child). I couldn't put it down. I think the next book I'll be reading is The Shining. I have no idea how I haven't read it earlier, I love Stephen King books. I've read the first one, and I think I also read the other two, but the first one is still on my bookshelf....giving me the eye. It'll haunt you for sure. I'm not sure there's a word in any language for what the poor kid went through. WTF You haven't read The Shining!?! Get on it! And then Dr. Sleep right after. That trilogy is haunting. I think I still have the first one.

I never read the next two books after A Child Called It. I couldn't handle it. I made the mistake of reading it in 8th grade. I'm 32 years old and I can still quote pieces from memory. I make it a point now to avoid those types of books b/c I can never get them out of my head. The same goes for anything on the Lifetime Channel. Right now I am reading Felicia Day's autobiography. I loved her as Charlie on Supernatural so when I saw her book at the library I had to read it. While I was there the library was having a local author's book fair so I ended up buying a couple of books for $10. One is about a zombie apocalypse and the other is Greek mythology based. I figure I like Percy Jackson and The Walking Dead so why not. It's not every day I find brand new books that cheap. Waiting on the new Rick Riordan book to show up. It appeared in Gwen's latest scholastic book flyer so I ordered it for myself.

Still don't want to read it.
How he managed to grow up and move past all that is beyond me.

I just read The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan - it's middle/high school mythology fiction, and was a quick, entertaining read. Not as good as his other books, so I'm glad I got it from the library and didn't purchase it, but still entertaining.
I just got Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee from the library, so that's next on my list.

The Lord Peter Whimsey detective series by Dorothy L Sayers. Just downloaded the first three stories as an ebook from the library. I hope they are good. I've had a hard time finishing fiction books lately so I've been reading more nonfiction. I just finished the book 438 days about the fisherman in Mexico that was lost as sea and turned up in the pacific. It was interesting. I don't think I would have the ability to survive the way he did. I also read one of the Carly Fiorina autobiographies. I've been interested in her life since she mentioned having a kid die from drug addiction in one of the debates plus I wanted to know more about her time at HP and why she was let go. I was surprised to find that she has had a history of dabbling in the edges of politics and a failed attempts to run for senate in California.

I just finished Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee. It's definitely not To Kill A Mockingbird, but still a good read.

I just finished The Sword of Summer a couple of days ago.
I liked it better than the Kane Chronicles but it's not as good as Percy Jackson.

I finished listening to all of Wool, Shift, Dust! ... best thing I read this year, and I read some good stuff. Its just so nice to have a trilogy where book three isn't a total let down....
What else. Well, I read some smut crap but also? .... The 5th Wave was ok. The kids and I are reading The Road right now... so well done. Bleak, heartwrenching, but well done. I liked Eeny Meeny and Pop Goes the Weasel a lot... looking forward to the next one. Shut Your Eyes Tight by Vernon was not bad. I listened to Playing with Fire by Tess Gerritson, good audio, the inclusion of the music was a positive for me. I listened to Relic, an old one. I'm almost done with Reykjavik Nights... nothing spectacular, a police mystery, but it takes place in Iceland, so that's good

I finished the Wool, Shift and Dust books too. I enjoyed it but the end wasn't hard to predict. (the details were, but overall....) I also got what oped said a while back about taking a while to get into Shift because you wanted to know how the first set of characters were doing. I'm currently reading a Stephen King book, Bazaar of Bad Dreams. I always enjoy his stuff.

For anyone who likes Victorian era book- try Michael Cox- the meaning of night.
By far one of my favorite books. Murder, deceit, love. I think of it as the "darkside" of the victorian era. First book I've ever read that I got so mad at the main character, I put the book away for about a month.

Chocolate Lover I'm not sure that was me on Shift? Maybe ... been a bit
I actually was still on the edge of my seat through Dust. It did go a little slow and then rocket toward the end... but while the end wasn't something you couldn't imagine happening, I wasn't sure exactly how or IF it would... the author was not at all afraid to get you to invest in and like characters and then kill them off... I wasn't sure to the end who was going to make it and who was not... (hope that isn't too spoilery? If so i'll erase it )
Abby, have you ever read The Thirteenth Tale?

oped, I could have sworn it was you, but I didn't go back and look. I thought we had started reading it at close to the same time. ? I did see the ultimate ending coming but getting there was still enjoyable to read.

A Man Called Ove by Frederik Backman.
If you are suicidal, don't read it. The main character is trying to kills himself and keeps getting interrupted by situations with neighbors.

I just finished book 1 of The Stormlight Archive, The Way of Kings. Loved it, but now I have to wait weeks for book 2 at the library, and book 3 hasn't even been released yet Also waiting on book 2 of The Wheel of Time, which should be available any day now.
In the meantime, I'm reading The Power of Habit, and Bringing up Bebe.

I read "The Boys on the Boat" - This was a great book. I enjoyed having all the background and descriptions from the past in my own backyard.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See
Summary:
Lily is haunted by memories of who she once was, and of a person, long gone, who defined her existence. She has nothing but time now, as she recounts the tale of Snow Flower, and asks the gods for forgiveness. In nineteenth-century China, when wives and daughters were foot-bound and lived in almost total seclusion, the women in one remote Hunan county developed their own secret code for communication: nu shu ( women s writing ). Some girls were paired with laotongs, old sames, in emotional matches that lasted throughout their lives. They painted letters on fans, embroidered messages on handkerchiefs, and composed stories, thereby reaching out of their isolation to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. With the arrival of a silk fan on which Snow Flower has composed for Lily a poem of introduction in nu shu, their friendship is sealed and they become old sames at the tender age of seven. As the years pass, through famine and rebellion, they reflect upon their arranged marriages, loneliness, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood. The two find solace, developing a bond that keeps their spirits alive. But when a misunderstanding arises, their lifelong friendship suddenly threatens to tear apart. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is a brilliantly realistic journey back to an era of Chinese history that is as deeply moving as it is sorrowful. With the period detail and deep resonance of Memoirs of a Geisha, this lyrical and emotionally charged novel delves into one of the most mysterious of human relationships: female friendship. "From the Hardcover edition.""

JSo, I've been reading popular fiction/mystery type stuff... Read the Katie Burkholder books, The latest two Helen Grace novels (Doll's House and Liar Liar) and some of the Dave Gurney books too... It's a theme. Nothing too dense

I got tired of waiting for the library's kindle copy of Words of Radiance (book 2 of Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson) so I picked up their hardback version. It is massive! Not sure how I'm going to read it. I can't carry it around in my purse, it's impossible to hold, and I can't read in the dark. I'll get an hour of reading in a day if I'm lucky. A thousand+ page book seems like nothing on an e-reader. Now I feel like a brat for whining about how much I preferred my old kindle to my paperwhite.

So, my New Year's Resolution was to start reading again. I'd always had perfect vision, but several years ago my close up started going bad and I quit reading, by the time I realized what was going on and got glasses I was out of the habit and have been having a hard time getting back into it. Way too much TV watching and computer time now. Started Game of Thrones yesterday. My eyes still aren't right. I think my prescription needs to be upped.
