Just started the first Timmy Failure book with DD10. Reading level 4th-8th grade. We laughed out loud several times last night and are plowing through it. I especially liked the random higher level vocabulary thrown in. Sometimes context made the definitions obvious, and sometimes I had to explain them. Would be a great series for reluctant boy readers. It's just so quirky. Someone else's review - "With hilarious comic strip illustrations, Timmy Failure is set to be the latest hot read for 9- to 12-year-olds. Full of deadpan humour, visual gags and a twist of the surreal, Stephan Pastis is onto a winner with this new series." I randomly put this on hold for DS10 earlier today, so I hope he likes it as well! He loves reading, but we’re struggling finding new books to read. The good news is he’s always willing to grab an old favorite, but I want to keep introducing new stuff as well.

Let me know if he does and I can keep posting ideas. I assume he's tried the I survived series as those seem to be mega popular.
Fwiw, I have my best luck when I comb the mark twain and other books awards for titles to put on hold.

He has tried some of the I Survived stories - he’s hit or miss on those, depending on the topic, but will look at them when he sees them.
I will check out the Mark Twain book awards list - great idea! I’ve looked at the William Allen White lists before, but not Mark Twain.

Spirit Bear The Lightning Thief series (I actually appall the plot gaps, but upper elementary, lower middle level boys love it) The boy in the striped pajamas Coraline
Let me keep thinking; it's been a bit since I've taught middle school language arts.

Just started it today, so far pretty good.

Just finished Final Heir by Faith Hunter. I believe this might be the last Jane Yellowrock book and it was really good. 4+* from me. I just started the latest Lucas Davenport book I believe it's called Righteous Prey. Have that going in the car by CD.
Tried to read Into the Broken Lands by Tanya Huff and I just could not get into it at all. So that was a DNF for me.

Started on the Bruno series by Martin Walker - Bruno is the chief of police in the Dordogne region of France. I like English murder mystery series, never tried a French series. (Well, a series written by an American but set in France). The book I’m reading is The Crowded Grave, and starts with an archeological dig finding a skeleton wearing a watch, with a bullet wound in the skull, in a dig site with 30,000 year old remains. So far so good. DH says a good murder mystery has to have a corpse within the first chapter. Listening to the Hillary Clinton/Louise Penny audio book for our book club. I love Louise Penny, but this book is about the US Secretary of State and her attempt to stop a terrorist attack - I have to admit, I prefer the murders that take place in charming Three Pines. I struggle with books with a lot of characters (can’t maintain a list of a bunch of characters, especially using an audiobook, and that book is crammed with different characters). It’s especially tough if I get busy and don’t listen for several days. But I’ll slog through it for the book club.

I just finished listening to "Missoula: Rape and Justice in a College Town" by Jon Krakauer.
I thought it was a very good book, touching on a subject that is all too common in our country - not only rape and secual assault but the aftermath of it (no charges being filed, victim blaming, etc).
I have enjoyed all of the Krakauer books that I have read, especially Into Thin Air.

I finished both Sweetwater and the Witch by Jayne Castle and Storm Echo by Nalini Singh yesterday. I enjoyed both.
I have 3 more books that need to be turned in next week, so I am going to start Reckoning by Catherine Coulter tonight And get through My Killer Vacation this weekend. I am still listening to the Lucas Davenport audiobook in my car. I plan on bringing it in and listening to a disc or 2 so that can also be turned in next week too.

Reading the latest Ilona Andrews "Sweep of the Heart" it's a fun book basically the Galactic version of the Bachelor.
I am listening to the audio play A Street Car Named Desire for a change of pace. Ilona Andrews is also putting out a novella in the Kate Daniel's World called "Magic Tides." I already put in my pre-order and am impatient for it to come out in mid January.

Finished SOTH and ugly cried on the last 10% of the book. It was good, I just was not expecting the turn that occurred at the end. Read "the Pilot's Daughter" really good off KU. Something different, but enjoyable. Not sure what's next for me to read - it will be what catches my eye.

For those with kids, dc10 is enthralled with the Funjungle series by Stuart Gibb. This is the first series dc will pick up to read when there are "better" activities available like screen time.

Finished How the Word is Passed A reckoning with the history of slavery in America.
Definitely learned a lot from it. It was a very interesting and eye opening read
In a similar vein I encourage reading The Dressmakers of Auschwitz. It presents a part of the Holocaust that doesn't get much discussion and how there needs to be a reckoning of how much European economy benefited from it.

Rereading cook books. Fanny Farmer (the old version) and ATK Cooking for Two. I still have my "I Hate To Cook Book" by Peg Bracken from the 60's. The title alone said it all for me and nothing has changed thru the years

Just finished The Silent Patient. I thought it was good but not great, like some others have said.
Now I'm reading The Ink Black Heart - thr latest Cormoran Strike novel. I like theme series but they keep getting longer! This one is over 1,000 pages.
Does anybody have book/reading resolutions for the new year?
I'm thinking of a goal of 26 books. I really need to read more.

Attempting to read Gideon the Ninth and I am just not getting or feeling this one. Might try tonight but end up DNFing the book. Thankfully I got it through the library so can return. Than probably onto The Sea Wolves by Clive Cussler and Jack Du Brul for a cleansing book.

Thanks! Just put that on hold to see if DS will give it a try. He loves to read, but grabs the same books over and over, so always looking for something new he may try.

Does anybody have book/reading resolutions for the new year? I'm thinking of a goal of 26 books. I really need to read more. I set a goal on GoodReads each year. My goal this year is 36 books (which is what it was last year). I think I ended up with 37 last year - finished the final one on NYE. I’m off to a great start this year having finished 3, but it will slow down when I get busier again, so trying to enjoy it while I can.

So far the year I’ve read: Drunk on Love: okay The Spanish Love Deception: utterly predictable, but I thought it was a cute and fun read All Grown Up: did not like; if it had been any longer, I wouldn’t have finished it

Almost finished with Small Game by Blair Bravernan.
It's about people who agree to be part of a survival show but end up being abandoned by the show and end up having to survive for real.
It's exploring desire for fame and our obsession with these types of shows.
I really enjoyed it.

I actually lowered my yearly total to 400 books this year. I read and will re-read favorites but I still end up reading over 500 books the past few years. I have been reading a series and slogged through Gideon. The book was not for me and I am not interested in continuing the series. I think so far I have read 11 books and started Sea Wolves.
After that I have Killers of a Certain Age. I also have Nancy Wake on audiobook /KU for a more biographical book on WW2.
