The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah.
It's an interesting story of hope, resilience, love and bravery during the Dust Bowl years.

Educated by Tara Westover. It’s a biography about someone raised by religious fundamentalists who homeschooled their kids and the mom did homeopathic medicine on them, even when they had really serious injuries.
The book is convincing me it needs to be harder to have kids. Like people who take all the seat belts out of their van and drive at high rates of speed during blizzards because they can’t drive faster than their guardian angels can fly should not be allowed to have kids.

Yes that was a good book particularly since the story is not that old.

I read that a few years ago. It's definitely flabbergasting. Even more interesting: Her family disputes the book. I saw that, but she says several times in the book ‘this is how I remember this, my brother Lucas remembers cuz, and my brother Taylor remembers abc” so I think she admits that people remember things differently. At the beginning of the book she talks about remembering the Randy Weaver incident as though she was a witness, when she wasn’t, so I think she’s open about how kids especially can misremember things. (I personally had a fight with my mom over whether or not we had a salt lick in our back yard in one of the houses we lived in, my mom insisted we didn’t, but my dad said we did, and I remember it clearly). One of the other things they dispute is that the dad is bi polar, but as a family that rejects medicine in favor of herbal tinctures I can see how they would resist the idea that he was sick with anything. Not sure if he had no polar but he sure seems off.

Typically when I end up reading a Kristen Hannah book I tend to ugly cry. Winter Garden I listened to on Audio and thank goodness I was at home with that one. I went through a whole box of tissue and my whole head/body ached. I had planned on listening to it while doing a drive to visit my mom. That book would have had me in a ditch or just miserable if I had been trying to drive. I would have been blinded due to crying.

I just finished listening to Wicked Fix by Sarah Graves. It's a good book and I enjoyed the narrator.

I did make a note on my want to read list. I use the library free e-books. I'll see if it's listed. I also noted Wicked Fix.

Finished The Witches Heart which is about Norse mythology. It was really good it made me cry in several places.
I just started Children of Blood and Bone. I kept hearing rave reviews so decided to give it a try. This one African mythology based.
Not sure if I like it but I'm only a couple chapters in and I think my expectations were set too high by all the hype.
Will likely check out the second book from the library instead of purchasing it. I'm interested enough to keep going.

I am listening to A Promised Land by Barack Obama. He narrates it himself. It is interesting, but I started another audio book from the library. Don't know when I will finish it.

Any recs for free or reasonably priced subscription audio books primarily for kids?
Dd has listened to every audio and 'read-to-me' book on GetEpic. We use Hoopla but that only allows 5 books a month which she goes through in a week. Thinking about kindle unlimited, but not sure if you can add audio with it? I've been thinking kindle unlimited because of what I'm buying there anyway, but I knew if I did that we'd start picking books not included.
We need to go back to the library, and maybe I get dd her own cd player for audio books. The playaways frequently need technical assistance so I'm less excited about those.

I finished All the Colors of Night by JAK and am starting The Missing Prince by John Flanagan.
I also started listening to The Spy who Wore Red. It's being slow for me.

All 4 of us have library cards. We only use mine for physical books bc that is easier to track. We use all 4 to up our hoopla count lol. I put a card number on each device - ipad, laptop, DH phone, my phone. They Bluetooth the phones to alexa in their room. During extreme quarantine we figured out a neighbor had no interest in hoopla so added that number in the mix. For a while ours had a 'free' section that didn't count toward borrows. Not sure if they still do. Another thought is to bump her up to longer books that last more hours Our playaways have been good. I usually only get them for car trips bc I get tired of tracking them back down to return. We always seem to lose the box. I don't get the audio book CDs anymore either. Curious what you mean by tech issues.

I have 3 Audible credits to spend because I forgot to cancel my subscription when I ordered the last Fredrik Backman book.
Give me some recommendations, so I can cancel my membership - I have like 20 books bought that I haven't listened to yet (no commute means no long car rides to enjoy an audiobook!).

Fav genres or book titles? Love all Fredrik Backman titles. Enjoy the Cormoran Strike series. I like Kate Morton, though sometimes her twists are predictable. Where the Crawdads Sing. Karin Slaughter is ok but a little violent. Where'd You Go, Bernadette? Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry. I enjoy most Neil Gaiman - Graveyard Book, The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Also like historical ones like The Boys in the Boat, Beneath a Scarlet Sky.

It always seems like the playaways have issues, or we ignore them. Not sure if its luck, or if the kids were just too little and causing the issues, we could try again. We really like the wonder books, but the selection is small at our library. I've asked her about picking longer chapter books, but I want her to easily have the stuff she likes so that reading doesnt become a fight or a chore. We read more chapter books before bed lately abd I don't think she likes having multiple ones going. (She was very skeptical about the Willoughby's but ended up loving it - that was a great rec).

We are currently reading 'The problim children' which feels a bit like the Willoughbys so we're enjoying it. She is listening to Little House and following the book - this was her own idea. She is ploughing through books lately. Check your library site for other electronic options. I just remembered that ours also has Overdrive and Libby for audiobooks. Looks like we get 10/month on hoopla and 20 on the other two options. I don't think we've used them much, but I'd have to ask the kids. Give playaways another try now that she's on a roll. Using real headphones instead of ear buds made it better for my 8 yo. Our principal just launched her annual reading challenge to get the K-8 to read 125k pages in a month to earn an extra recess. My girls usually turn in 3k pages each It's usually in March and we miss some days during our spring break trip and then as the weather turns better. April is going to be tougher. I keep telling the principal to make it a Jan or Feb challenge when it's cold outside. That's the best time for reading and the kids in particular can get bored and stir crazy.

Finished The Memory Painter by Gwendolyn Womack. I've read it multiple times already. I was in the mood for the safety and comfort of a book I don't have to pay too close attention too and I know I like.
She has two other books so I got another one off thrift books called The Fortune Teller. We'll see if I like it as much.

I thought it was very heavy-handed for a murder mystery.

Finished "Life's Too Short" by Abby Jimenez, it's the third in The Friend Zone series.
Pretty light romantic-type books, but I have really enjoyed all three.

I hear you on this! Since the shut down I haven't been going to the gym, not driving much (none now, had some seizures) so my audio books are backed up. At least in the summer i tend to take hour long walks everyday so I will start to catch up.
