What I've always wondered....The balls are inflated and tested in the locker room or somewhere inside. It was freaking cold as hell in Boston at the time of the game. Air contracts in the cold. I think they were only like 1 psi less than regs. Not being big into physics I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that the cold air could have done that. Did anyone test the other teams balls? And if they did do they know what they were inflated to? It's my understanding there's an allowable range. So if the pats inflated to the min allowed the change in weather would push them below, but if you inflated to the top of the range then you'd still be in range with the change from temp.

I imagine he will be suspended for preseason and a couple of actual games. The NFL will do anything right now to get off the female abuse train.
Just look at what the Cleveland Cavaliers are going through right now over a promotional video.

I hate the Patriots, but I don't care if they cheated or not. Just wish the Giants thought of it. Eli would not do such a thing! He has morals.

I don't hate the Patriots, don't think it's cheating after hearing retired QB's talk about how they had balls inflated for their preference like LOTS of QB's have done/do. Big todo about nothing IMO. But good golly is Tom HOT! PS: I am a Nascar fan where it's not cheating until there is a very specific rule against whatever happened (IE: they find a loophole and until it's closed it's used for advantage). So playing in the gray areas is a part of sport that I think happens in all sports. So because other QB's have cheated, then it is okay for Tom to have done it and lied through his teeth about it? If it is not a big deal, why not come clean? NASCAR is a whole different story.

Obviously I am not really following the whole thing. No need to follow. Just know that Tom is hot so therefore he can play with any kind of balls he likes apparently.

Assuming they didn't account for it when measuring (which is a big assumption), the temperature change could definitely cause that much of a drop in pressure. It's likely they took the pressure readings indoors, however. Unless they have that kind of equipment available out on the field.

chiver78: Indeed, but wouldn't deflated footballs benefit both teams equally? That's what I don't get. What good is cheating if the other team gets the same "bonus"? Actually, Virgil, chiver's answer was incorrect. Each team supplies their own footballs for the game. It is very difficult to play with new footballs that have not yet been "broken in." This way, they can practice with and use them up until a certain time before the game starts. At that point, they are supposed to be inspected by the officials and then locked away for the game.
My recollection is that 11 of the 12 Patriots footballs were underinflated. The cold temperature could not have been a factor since none of the other team's footballs were similarly affected.

The most surprising thing to me is not that the Cheatriots got caught again, but that Belicheat was cleared in the report.

Brady will probably file a grievance and get it reduced. As far as the team being fined a million dollars, I disagree. Coaches and mgmt were not involved. I have mixed feelings about this. We all know there are players that are felons and playing the game. The wife and girlfriend beating still goes on. The NFL'S number one draft pick this year is a rapist and convicted thief, but not a problem having him at quarterback.
Atlanta is fined for piping in crowd noise, and yet the loudest stadium is Seattle, due to construction, gives their team an unfair advantage against visiting teams. If the NFL wants to be "fair" any Seattle play off games should be played elsewhere or in Seattle with only 50% of the seats filled with fans. What is fair, anymore? Why are footballs even allowed to be brought in by both teams? In baseball, all balls are inspected, and rubbed with clay by the umpires, before the game, and the homeplate umpire distributes the balls as needed, and ump, batter, catcher or pitcher can ask for a ball to be changed at any time, and is, after being inspected by the umpire. Why did the NFL not announce a new program for the footballs with this announcement? Because they are caught in a harsh light with the wife beaters and thieves, so they go after an easy target. A team America loves to hate.

I doubt it will get reduced. If Brady thinks he has a chance without turning over the phone, e-mail, and text records he is out of his mind. And doing so will only prove that he lied during the investigation, thus proving the reason for an increased suspension.
The Patriots organization has a history of cheating going back decades. Anyone else remember the snowplow incident? Probably why Don Shula has been so willing to blast New England over this. And yeah, the Patriots remember it. Didn't they honor the driver and even feature the snowplow in a large exhibit hall at the stadium?

And one other thing. Where were the refs during this game with the Colts?
They handle the ball when they spot it after every play. That idiot did not know anything was wrong with the football? I think there is at least one ref that should be fired. And the fact the head ref knew the balls were "missing" before game time and did not think maybe we should check them again? I see more questions than answers in this investigation

Still, regardless of whether the officials or the NFL itself also made errors, it does not in any way negate what Brady and the Patriots' staffers did. Willfully conspiring to cheat IS willfully conspiring to cheat.

Willfully conspiring to cheat IS willfully conspiring to cheat. Ahh, but the rub is they do not know Brady did that. They said he might have been "aware". And if referees could not tell the balls were under inflated, there is a problem with the NFL handing out any penalty. They were the ones in control of the rules and could not tell the balls were underinflated when they handled them after every play. Now stop the outlandish noise crowd in Seattle that is only generated there due to the physical construction layout of the stadium. Management might or might not have known the acoustics gave the home team an advantage, but they do now, and so does the NFL.

The language used in the report is basically legalese. There is no real doubt in the report about what actually happened.
The summation at the end of the article:

It is true that the design of the stadium helps to an extent, but what it does even more is energize the fans to be even louder. They then see what kind of effect they have on other teams and become louder still.
And if it is something that can be so easily duplicated merely by stadium design, why have other teams with new stadiums not been able to get anywhere close to the same effect at their fields? Perhaps there is an alternate explanation.... You think? Maybe?

No. It is still an unfair home team advantage that the NFL is aware of, and permits to exist. And why are the referees not a part of the problem? If they were in charge of the balls, we would not be having this discussion. No team should supply and control their balls. Especially the game balls.

Isn't that some sort of violation of the COC to come back and post?
The refs should be held accountable too. However, blaming others for something you obviously did is a very lame defense.

In the category, of, "not that it matters" I formally announce I am boycotting NFL televised games for the first four games this fall. Please understand I am not giving up very much. Four more games of watching Jay Cutler is not much of a thing to miss. In fact it should be a healthy emotional thing to do

Such a talented wide receiver wasted on such a useless QB.
