Maine has one of the highest voting percentages in the nation. We also have same day registration and easy absentee voting, as well as "motor-voter", where you can register to vote at the same time that you register your car. Maine has tried for years to make the process of voting easier. Indeed the new Republican governor and state reps are now trying to restrict voting by requiring picture ID's and ending same day registration. It really is shameful, especially since in the history of the state only one person has ever been prosecuted for voter fraud. Suppressing the vote is a time honored Republican tradition, however. Same day registration? Gimme a break. This is simply an invitation to commit voter fraud. I think you ought to think more carefully about supporting what are obviously measures designed to make it easy to commit vote fraud. The real shame is when a legal citizen of the United States has their vote supressed and taken away because when they go to vote, their vote is canceled out by the vote of someone who does not have a legal right to vote. For years Democrats have relied on the illegal votes of illegal aliens, felons, and party apparachics stuffing ballot boxes, illegally voting on behalf of dead people, illegally voting multiple times in multiple places, intimidating voters, suppressing and outright stealing and diverting the absentee votes of our brave men and women fighting overseas, I'd frankly be ashamed to be a part the modern Democratic Party so dependent on the ability to steal the election and cancel out the will of responsible, law-abiding, legal United States citizens. And as a conservative it is easy to tell when a left wing scam is threatened-- because the kookoo birds all come out and start shrieking about racism, starving children and old people, wanting dirty water, and dirty air, blah, blah, blah. Democrats are shamelessly trying to preserve vote fraud as an institution, and expand it rather than protect the right of eligible, legal US citizens, and protect our sacred votes.

And republicans look like nut jobs when they scream about stupid stuff like the Motor Voter law that allows you to register to vote when you renew your driver's license or register to vote when you sign up for welfare. If you can meet the residency requirements, citizenship, and age requirements, you should be able to register.
Everyone has an agenda.................
And for the record, I've got a problem with same day registration too. If you can't get it together to register 30 days before the election, then you probably shouldn't be voting. it also doesn't give the Board of Elections sufficient time to check to see if you're registered elsewhere.

Of course, I don't know a single person that doesn't at the very least have a state ID. many elderly people do not have a state ID. many young people under 21 who do not drive also will not have a state-issued ID. there are plenty from both groups that may have federally-issued passports, some will have school IDs. Voting is a right, but it's also a responsibility. If a person doesn't take their right to vote and the responsibilities that go along with it seriously enough to document their own identity, then too bad, so sad. so then if someone isn't responsible enough to live well, without causing physical harm or mental anguish to anyone else, do they have to forfeit that right as well? I mean, it's not like they are taking their right to life seriously. too bad, so sad.

Chiver, don't forget Military ID's......... I don't know about other states, but NYS issues a Non-Driver's ID card.

State issued id's are easy to get. Most if not all kids have drivers licenses by the time they get out of high school. I'm not buying the elderly argument either.

yup, I was thinking of those too. military IDs are usually seen as the free pass to get into anything though. at least as far as I've seen.
MA will issue a non-driver ID card too, but I can't think of many reasons that someone would seek one out unless they wanted it as a liquor ID. I remember quite a few kids in my college class that didn't drive and had no need for anything past the school-issued ID.

If you fly, you need Governmental issued ID, I dont' think a school ID will cut it.

You'll need an id to make some bank transactions, and also you need to show it along with other govt documentation to get a job. Cannot say for certain but if one does not work, does not have a bank account, they may still need an govt id to collect govt benefits. Being a responsible citizen with regard to voting and participating in our govt, requires some effort.

Lauderdale for spring break.

OK, the Patriot Act made me give the bank a copy of my license when I refinanced, but other than that, I'm good.

Where/what is BFE?

Has zero to do with the patriot act. I had my first bank account in the mid 70s. Anytime I wanted to cash a check or withdraw money, I had to show ID.

The Patriot Act now requires all banks to get a copy of a driver's license or other ID in a mortgage/refinance transaction so the mortgagee can be checked with the terror suspect database. Ordinarily, banks require ID to withdraw cash, but the tellers know me, so I don't have to show it.

Most tellers don't know the people coming in. I go into my bank, maybe twice per year. If one is stopped by a cop, you must show ID.

I have no problem with requiring proof of identity in order to vote. I just have major issues with people like the idiot in NH trying to limit access because he's annoyed with a certain group of voters. and like I said last night, if someone can point me to something that says otherwise, I'll be happy to consider it.

Well, in some states you will have to show ID to vote. No big deal, to the extent it is a big deal-- I'm for making it easy and free for anyone who can document via a valid Social Security card and birth certificate that they are who they say they are. November 2012 is a ways off. I see no reason why reasonable steps couldn't be taken NOW to make compliance simple and free.

You still need to show ID.
In Oct 2009, one week following my son's death, I was back to work and in a fog and daze... I boarded a subway train at the World Trade Center, and walked from one car to the next using the doors at the end of the train. Happens to be a violation subject to a ticket. Sure enough a cop was standing there. Stopped me, first thing he asked was for my ID. Got a $75 ticket.

No, not really. But requiring a transient population, such as college aged kids, who would number in the 1000s in a small community, could cause numerous problems for a small town. College kids would typically vote in their home towns via absentee voting.

I've been pulled over a few times, they know who I am. I realize that ordinarily, you have to show ID, but for those of us who live in small towns, life isn't the same as in NYC. I'm not naive enough to think life is like this all over. I'm just having some fun with you. Geez, you say I'm cranky.

College kids would typically vote in their home towns via absentee voting. but they are not required to do so. they can absolutely declare residency in the place where they live the majority of the year. celebrities declare residency wherever they wish, why can't the average Joe College Student do the same?

No I did not. For college kids attending out of state schools, they need to be residents of the state. Been there, done it.... I went to college out of state. You keep trying to fool me Swamp. I've been around much longer than you have and have also seen and done a heck of a lot more.
