I don't know. Why do you want to be presumed younger or older than you are either way? Your age is your age. Doesn't it make sense to look damn good and say, yup, I am 60 rather than pretend to be another age or something? I kind of don't get it. And I agree with you, Shooby. But remember-no one wants to get old. It means time is running out. I think just about everyone would like it if they were always, say, in their forties. Physically and mentally, the forties were and are a good age.

I get more annoyed when young people or sales people call me by my first name. If I don't know you, don't do it. I know they're forced to by their employers, the fake friendliness, but I find it rude. I've never had that happen before but I did have something happen recently that I loved. A friend and I recently went to a Japanese place to eat lunch. We didn't pay attention to when they closed and we were so busy running our mouths that when we realized we were the only ones there and that they were closed I apologized profusely to the owner. He was so lovely and patient with us and when I suggested they lock the door after us he thanked us for coming and asked us our names and then repeated them again and told us to come back soon and to not worry about how long we stay. He had also introduced himself to us with his first name. We are going back tomorrow. I LOVE Japanese people and he was cute!!

I hate being called "ma'am"!!!!!! I'll take Ma'am over " yo, bitch" any day. I have. In a gaming store. I guess the guy thought it was cool. Not.

People were flabbergasted with my sports car. They want my house, my DH, my car. I'm the girl in girl crush but my hair isn't long (anymore) and blonde. The tennis pro said I was his special project. I even have a pet name from him! Clerks ask DH if he wants the senior discount but don't ask me.

I'm 30, and have noticed a bit more deference than I used to a few years ago. Though I think a lot of it recently has been because I work with the military, and they'll call you "sir" whether you like it or not.
Being called "sir" doesn't usually bother me. Those who do it I don't normally know that well, so I don't really care what they think.
I kind of agree with Zib in t hat I find it a little off putting when clerks or sales people use my first name. It's not that I expect a certain level of respect, but I feel it's too informal for a sales situation. I feel like any sales person that uses my first name is chumming up to me for a sale, and I'm even more on guard than usual.

If the barista at starbucks looks at my gold card and writes my name on the cup and follows it up with " Thanks Abby, have a good day." I have no problem with it. If I'm shopping for clothes etc and the clerk asks my name in order to gain some type of familiarity- it pisses me right off and I usually make up a name. Furniture shopping is the worst. I think I've told the story before that DH about died when I told a furniture sales guy that my name was Lily and I was a school teacher.

I'm weird about the first name thing. Even when I worked in a job where I had to wear a name-tag, I hated when people called me by my first name, I just feel an introduction is required first. I thought about putting "Lola" on my name-tag at work. Part of it is that I'm bad at remembering faces, so if someone calls me by name, I assume that we've met before. Then, I would have to run through the files in my head trying to figure out who it was, where I know then from...

I don't mind the name thing and informality. I am fine with it. But I have been called so many things that my first name is a pleasure! Lol

One part time job I had I worked with a woman who was only 3 years older than me. I don't know why but she wore her hair in a very short poodle curl, oy, it was so aging. Clients would come in and ask her if I was her daughter! I felt like telling her it was her hair, but that is only something you would volunteer to a friend. Made me feel pretty damn good though!

There was a customer I had at one agency I worked who was a very nice older lady. I was doing something on her policy, maybe updating her DL# or something and caught a glimpse of her age. She was only 2 years older than me! I was only 33 when I left there and it was not towards the end. I was shocked.

I've had a lot of people that work at the grocery store greet me, as if I'm a secret shopper or something. Other than that, I don't feel like I'm treated too differently. I think my attitude is different now, which affects my entire outlook and interaction with strangers.
