I miss Later. ETA - I started sewing at about age 3 - my mother taught me out of self-defense. The only time I ever sewed over my finger was in school sewing class when the teacher made me use the finger guard - never again!

I think of a "survival" skill as something useful that enables one to fend for oneself, just as you were able to do, GEL. Though I suspect that if I had used the word "useful" instead of "survival" it would not have made much difference. Given the sneering tone of some of the responses, sewing is not viewed by some persons as something anyone should waste any effort learning to do.
However, if the young lady in question had been able to sew (as I was able to do at her age), there would have been no need for that thread in the first place because she would have been empowered to take care of her own problem without the need for a handout from anyone. What you said was "I guess young women don't learn survival skills anymore. Pity." As a woman who did not learn to sew as a teenager, I found that comment in isolation a tad condescending, even a little insulting to me personally, even though the comment was not directed to me. I think sewing is a wonderful skill that I might like to learn someday. I also think that many of the responses to your comment were way over the top. But if the only takeaway you got from the experience was that this message board is irrationally hostile to and dismissive of sewing . . . that's a pity. I generally enjoy your posts and I hope you don't see this as an attack (on either you or on sewing!), just a perspective on how a comment you meant one way (sewing is a useful/self-sufficient skill) can be interpreted another way (dannylion thinks I suck at life because I don't know how to sew). dannylion, by no means do I want you to stop posting. I am absolutely not trying to stir the pot here. I truly am posting this so that we can all understand each other better--because isn't that the point of being human?
I do want to say that at the time of the thread I also completely had adela76's interpretation of your comment that she quoted. I can sew the ribbons on my daughter's pointe shoes; I can sew buttons. When I had a sewing machine (which my husband "decluttered"   I sewed pillow covers for the different holidays and seasons. When I was financially destitute, I darned socks. I cannot and never could whip up a prom dress. That was the part that I found dismissive of my adulthood. I do realize that you were never trying to insult anyone personally. Please don't stop posting; I'm glad you came back.

Yeah, I hate it when I sew myself to my project. But that's what seam rippers are for! (OK, maybe not if you sew your finger to your project). You can generally get the blood out if you spit on it. Saliva is particularly good for removing blood. Small amounts of blood. If you hit a vein, you're going to need to use something else. LOL!!!! I've never tried spitting on it! I'm going to, tho...next time the opportunity arises!
This is good to know for the next time I get a drop of blood on my daughter's brand new pointe shoes!

I've missed Miss Rigby since she left as I enjoyed. As a Beatles fan since 1964, I think of Eleanor Rigby often.

I think Ombud was posting a couple of days ago, in the EPA thread on Current Events. Not sure about Malarky, but I think she posted a month or so ago with an update on her kids?

Has anyone seen Ombud ? Malarky has also been missing for a while now. Malarky is around once in a while. She's well and busy with life. She organized the Massachusetts meet up in January. She tends to drive-by post these days. ;-)

I forgot I was reading a thread that was started a while back She stomped off a while back, I forget what it was over. I think Nancy has tried to email her and gotten no answer. I was meandering through this thread and saw this. Yes, I did email her. She did reply, and was so angry about several perceived slights on the EE board that she went off and did not return. I never have understood anyone getting mad at a virtual message board, but that's me. Granted, y'all are real people, of course. But it's a message board, not everyday life. In the big-scheme picture of things, you have put what is said here in perspective to the real world. But some people cannot do that.

Sometimes it's easier to get mad at people on a message board than to get mad at people in real life.

Sometimes it's easier to get mad at people on a message board than to get mad at people in real life. True in Miss Rigby's case, I think. She had a tough time living with family and wanted to leave and go back to the U.P. in Michigan, but her family did not want her to go.

Apparently @patstab left about 3 hrs ago as her name went black She asked that her posting history/account be deleted as she felt she'd disclosed too much. She's still around under another name.

Where's Virgil? Did he get embarrassed by one of his fellow Canadiens and finally throw in the towel?
