Our wedding date is the same as my great aunt's birthday. Instead of tossing my bouquet I made an announcement about it and handed her the bouquet instead. She was surprised and delighted.
Doesn't bother me any. There are only 365 days in a year and way more people than that on earth. At some point I am going to run into an event that occurs on the same day as my anniversary. I don't get to claim the date for myself and nobody else can ever use it.
Move the trip either before or after. It's not going to kill her to make an exception for the wedding. She can go back to her normal routine next year.

We got married on the day after Thanksgiving. I know the actual date, but just tell people it's the day after Thanksgiving. My DH says we should have gotten married the day after Christmas, because that's the same date every year. Eh, I don't care. We are married and that's all I care about. We always "celebrate" our anniversary on black Friday. Anyway, all that say, that if someone I know/am related to wants to get married the day after Thanksgiving, I'd say go for it. It's the perfect day. It's a Friday, most people have a 4 day weekend so everyone you want to come can be there, then if you don't leave immediately for your honeymoon, you have a couple days to relax before going back to work. It's just a day, after all!

Nope. Didn't find out until my wedding day that it was also my great-aunt's wedding day. Her DH had died some years before but she was thrilled with us having the same day. Alas she is no longer with us as well but I do feel nice knowing it gave her such happiness, especially since my dad was her favorite nephew. My sister got married Columbus Day weekend because of the 3 day weekend thing too. That was all well and good but what dumbass then goes to Florida for their honeymoon at the height of hurricane season? What was even better was the phone call while they were gone from the restaurant where they had the reception, to check and make sure nobody got food poisoning because apparently another party had issues.

Somebody getting married on my wedding anniversary is pretty much at the bottom of the worry barrel. Frankly, it's under it. I don't care at all.

If it were super-close family, I might be a little annoyed if it were the same day--like if it were my brother getting married again, otherwise not at all. It's hard enough getting open dates for venues, then to worry about it coinciding with special dates for all your cousins, etc.

Now for some fun "southern" etiquette. Per my grandparents, it was impolite to acknowledge/celebrate someone else's anniversary. The anniversary was something special between the couple and others should not be involved. Young children could appropriately asked to make cards/gifts, but grown children were only to recognize milestone anniversaries (ie- only the 10s) for their parents.Well, there you have it. I am southern and that's what I think as well. I just didn't realize it was only a southern thing. Could someone tell that to MY southern family? Mom gets bent if you forget hers, not sure she remembers mine though.

Hurricane season is 6 months long, you miss a lot of visit time if you go around that schedule.

Not to mention that hurricanes also happen outside the season, or in places you would not normally associate with having a hurricane. I can't imagine basing all my travel plans on hurricane season.

Don't remind me. I live in northeastern Mass. The first time we had a hurricane, Diana I think it was named, I was running around the house screaming we were all going to die. What did my father do? Drove to the beach to watch the waves. I ran around the house taping up windows. I was 10 or so and raised in the mountains. Like I had a clue? Yeah, they went to Key West that year and the next year. I do believe they had to ride out a not too severe hurricane the second year though. In a bar, of course so it wasn't really a hardship for them.

Our DD2 was born on our 5 year anniversary. She was due the day before or day after (I forget now) but my whole pregnancy we joked that she'd be born ON the anniversary just to be ornery. So now, our wedding anniversary will forever be her birthday first and foremost. Doesn't bother us a bit, we just celebrate the weekend before or after if we decide to do something.

I honestly don't care about anyone's Anniversary except ours. I mean, we aren't like 12, so worrying that someone else is using the Same Day! OMG! seems like , well, a 12 yr old!

It's just a number on a calendar; it is not anyone's personal property. There could be any number of completely innocent reasons why that date was chosen. What does it matter? Sounds like the ex's second wife is looking for offense where it is entirely possible that none was offered or intended. It's not about her anyway as it is not her wedding, and she doesn't get to decide when her husband's sister can get married. She can go or not go as she chooses. If I were the bride, I would hope she would not attend as she sounds like an attention whore and likely to create some sort of drama or other.

Around here, you have to book venues and churches at least a year to 18 months in advance. You take what is open. One of my co-workers is getting married over 4th of July weekend this summer because it was the only weekend the church was available. She knows some people won't come because of it but said for others, they will make a vacation out of it.

good lord...I don't know when anyone got married. And if anyone chose my wedding date to get married, I would tell them not to do it...not because of the date but because I need to warn everyone that marriage sucks :-p

I think it would be a bit romantic to go to a big wedding celebration on your anniversary. It would be like getting to have the party with family without all the expense- a very YM way to go about it

So I'm going to take a slightly different approach than most people saying they don't care. Let me start by saying I don't care if someone gets married on my anniversary...however, it sounds like that might not actually be the issue here.
The way I read it, the real issue is that I take a trip every year, everyone knows I take this trip every year, and now a very close family member has chosen to schedule their wedding on that same date. Go for it, but don't be upset if people don't drop their pre-arranged plans to attend your event. If it is important to have someone attend your event (any event), then you don't schedule it for a time when you know they already have plans and just expect that they'll drop their stuff because you want them to.

I get to dress up, eat and drink on someone else's dime, and dance? Someone please get married on my anniversary!

My sister got married on my 16th birthday. I was somehow able to get over it. I'm sure life will go on for all involved parties.

Take your trip the week before or the week after. Weddings are (theoretically) once in a lifetime. Anniversaries come every year. Weddings involve finding the right venue having an open spot, and the right church (if you are into that sort of thing) and a million other moving pieces. Anniversary trips can be scheduled around life fairly easily. Pretty selfish if your weekend in the Poconos ON THIS EXACT DATE is more important than the people you love.

Although I did schedule my wedding around the Travers Race Day at Saratoga. My friends from law school probably would not have come. I didn't want to make them pick one.

What she said and I will add if as the person organizing the event you took everyone exceptions into consideration you will never be able to pick a date. I am going through that now with our family reunion: - this cousin cannot do July 11 - this one have something on July 25 - this person wants us to do it earlier than July 18 - This person is not crazy about the location and date At the end it was screw this; we don't care about your opinions. Family reunion is on this date at this location, RSVP if you can make it. Don't if you can't... We were going nowhere trying to take everyone life situation into account since some had to travel from far away. Now you have the date 3 months in advance, if it is important to you you will plan accordingly.
