We are going to a food and wine airing tomorrow night and the chef does plates that are works of art.
As I can't take pics with my phone, I don't take any but many at the table do. As I finally came into the 21st century, I suspect I may be one of those too......if only to remember what the hell the chef did!

DH and I are foodies, and a lot of our friends thank us for that.
When we have a party, bash, bbq we take lots of food porn shots. Then the next year when invitations are going out for the same event we attach pictures from last year to remind those who didn't attend just what they missed.
When we travel and find a fantastic hole-in-the-wall restaurant we take food shots and post it to one of the boards we share with our friends - a lot of those in one particular group do this so we all know the great places to visit when traveling.

My grandpa liked to cook quite a bit and he used to take pictures of his food. So he took a picture, got the film developed, and then put it into a photo album. #dedication #foodie #youprobablyneverheardofthisdish

I think the term "foodie" just needs to die.
I do think it's hilarious to see people taking pictures of things and then just imagining the type of FB/IG post they are about to make. The other day I saw a lady out with her 6 month old at panera. I think in that situation, it would call for a "Lunch date!" caption.
Another time at a winery, we saw a couple placing their wine glasses by the window so they could get the vineyard in the background. They were even discussing what hash tag they should use (they went with #heavypour)
I find it all a little too fake for my tastes.

I write about food as a part-time job, and I always take photos to run with my column. Sometimes just one picture, and sometimes a series of them. I try to keep readers' sensitivities in mind and take appealing shots - after all, if I am writing about the place, it's because I want them to go there and eat there, not because I want them to avoid the joint. But posting food pictures as an everyday thing - like, "Hey, hey, this is what my better half and I are chowing down on tonight!" and posting a photo of a tuna surprise casserole , oh, heck no. That's just TMI in my book. But in general, I like to hear about food and what people are eating. It's an interesting way to spot trends learn about new ingredients.

Sometimes, it's fun. Most times, it's business. I do pay for all my meals, BTW. I accept nothing free. And one of the benefits has been that DH has become a more adventurous eater, at least.

So, is this the official post your food here thread then AAAAAGGHHH!!!!
Not that Carl's pics aren't appealing - they are. But this sort of stuff - like people posting pictures of what they just ate - is a big reason I find Facebook and Twitter to be hugely annoying. It's only slightly less annoying and boring than the people who constantly post pictures of their pets.
I don't mind pictures of pets, but I really don't care what you've been eating or what food you saw.

There are certain foods, just like certain people, that are not at all photogenic. Mongolian beef is one of them. If something has a lot of different colors/textures (like what Carl posted), it's easier to make it look good. Yeah, like biscuits and gravy. Looks like something the dog sicked up, ate, and then sicked up again.

That one doesn't look like it's made quite right. I'm not sure I'd eat that one.

Some food just isn't very photogenic. I've learned over time when I review a place: I have to pick something off the menu that photographs well, even if I'm not a fan of the dish. Anything with a lot of melted cheese, gravy or sauce just never looks good, unless it's professionally photographed in a studio. You need a lot of contrast and color and ingredients that pop in a photo - fresh fruits and vegetables always work. Fried food is iffy (thin fried stuff, like French fries or thinly cut vegetables are OK), but a well-stocked bread basket, especially if the place makes their own, is a good picture. Most burgers photograph well, especially if they have a fair amount of extras on them. Again, it's a contrast thing. Desserts can be great photos, if they have contrast (like Carl's photo). Fruit never seems to fail - unless it's covered by whipped cream, pudding, custard or anything that looks like a puddle.

Yeah, the savory cheesecake, while super delicious doesn't photograph very well...
However, the chicken and waffles did photograph pretty well, though some people may not find it super appetizing.
I do post a ton of pictures of the dogs, though I try not to do it all the time, more like lots of pictures go up once a month or less often. Last pictures were of my bloody dog (Terrier tore open his ear at the park, again), so I'll be nice and not share those here.
My family would probably like it if I posted more kid pictures.

Chicken and waffles around here is a gravy thing, not syrup.
But scrapple... You eat that with syrup.

I never had chicken and waffles. Are you supposed to eat it with syrup? Yes. Real maple syrup. And it's surprisingly good on chicken. Who knew? Apparently people in the South.

See, I've never had chicken and waffles that way. I never would have even considered it. I looked it up, and maybe its a Pennsylvania Dutch/Amish thing?
Around here they look like this:

Real? That stuff is very expensive. Are all those Chicken & Waffle places using real syrup? I doubt it. So, it's corn syrup.
