I don't get the fascination with taking pictures of food. Food is tough to make look appealing in pictures. You can't smell it and pics can't capture many of the details that your eye registers and processes automatically, so the pictures often end up flat and unappealing even when it's food that is tempting in real life.
Lately, whenever I look at recipes on websites, the trend is to post a picture of the recipe. Bad, bad idea. Here's one I found this morning. Would you make this Mongolian Beef recipe?

I've seen beautiful food pictures, so I think the wrong ones are used sometimes.

I do take pictures of food because my wife, MIL and sometimes me are amazing cooks. We also try to make it look way more appealing than the picture you posted, and we usually set the table for dinner:

Not that Carl's pics aren't appealing - they are. But this sort of stuff - like people posting pictures of what they just ate - is a big reason I find Facebook and Twitter to be hugely annoying. It's only slightly less annoying and boring than the people who constantly post pictures of their pets.

Food can absolutely be photographed well! I'll take pictures because food is one of my hobbies. I guess I could take up needlepoint.
ETA: And I take lots of pictures of my cats. Note to self: don't befriend milee on instagram! :-)

I have a grudge against food pictures due solely to the fact that I had the stomach flu shortly after joining Facebook. I couldn't do much more than lay in bed, nauseous, and play on my tablet. Every time I went on FB, I was inundated with picture after picture of food. Some may have looked really good to someone who wasn't on the verge of ralphing all the time.

I enjoy photos of food... And even more so photos of pets. I however, can't stand people's need to give play by plays of their children's potty training, sleep training, stomach virus, etc. More cute dogs, less "Hayden went poopie in the potty!" Eta: the problem with the photo in the OP is less about the dish that is the subject and more about bad photography skills. Sent from my HTC One_M8 using proboards

Mongolian beef looks like baby poop on rice.
But Carl's dinner looks pretty good.

I'll take pictures of food over first world whines.
ETA: First world whines that are seriously bent about stupid stuff. I'm all for the ones where people make fun of themselves, or really get that it's a first world whine.

Like the woman who felt persecuted because her child was such a special genius that nobody understood him and gave him/her the attention and accommodation they needed? Sigh. Yes, please substitute Mongolian Turd pic instead.

It's the constant posting them or wanting to show them to others that may start to annoy the friends after a while. More a question of quantity/quality. If there's a pic that's very funny, gorgeous, unique or otherwise interesting - it's very cool to share. But other than the really awesome or fun pics, nobody needs to see a new, but general pic of someone else's pet more than once or twice a year.

If it was acceptable to eat cats, it would probably eliminate half of the posts on Facebook.

I photograph my food if it's something I made, looks good, and I worked hard on it. It's like recording an accomplishment. As for the pets/kids statuses/pics, it's just people sharing what they enjoy or think is important. I get annoyed by endless animal statuses but I realize that that's what that person thinks is important right now - just like my potty training/milestone statuses.

There are certain foods, just like certain people, that are not at all photogenic. Mongolian beef is one of them. If something has a lot of different colors/textures (like what Carl posted), it's easier to make it look good.

Yeah, I've got one that lives in Boston and has to suffer the horror that is Boston mass transit at rush hour. Yes, it sucks, yes, people are smelly and annoying. So are the rants about it. Get over it, you live in a city and have to deal with smelly and annoying people. Move back home, you won't be packed in a tube that is continually running late with said smelly and annoying people.

I know a lot of people would disagree with that. specifically many of my friends who, like me, are animal lovers. If too much time passes, people start asking about my dog. But then again, he's cuter than most kids. so there's that.

I took pictures of the margarita cookies I made - they had tequila in them, and were in the shape of a margarita glass, and I used green and white icing, and had a salt/sugar rim. They were super cute.
I also took a picture of the 5 olympic ring pancakes I made for dinner. They looked terrible, but it was hilarious.

I prefer food pics over the endless 'my child is so wonderful' posts. sometimes I feel like I have juvenile delinquents since my kid hasn't found the cure for cancer or isn't helping old ladies cross the street or didn't give up their summer vacation to vaccinate orphans in mongolia.
and I love love love pictures of pets! if I ever took any I would post them.

Very, very true. If the success of Facebook and Twitter depended on people like me, those poor companies would fold very quickly. I'm aware that my views on this are closer to those of the late, grumpy Andy Rooney rather than the general population apparently.
