Yes, people buy cars for parts on Craigslist all the time.

Is there a junkyard near you that you could sell the car? Hubs buys car parts from a local junkyard and he sold his old car to it. You can always ask a mechanic or post on Craigslist, but a junkyard is another option.

If you take the claim for the insurance for totaling the car, usually they take the car away... at least IME. Did you get a check AND the car?

it drives but now has a broken taillight, the front bumper hanging off, a broken resonator and the front headlight/turn signal isn't working.

It doesn't sound like anything major to fix to be street legal and lots of people don't care about cosmetics.

I haven't even filed a claim yet Ok, well, I would talk to your insurance broker first. When my car got totaled, they basically 'wanted' ALL the parts for it's valuation. It could be that if you sell the transmission out from under them it will nullify your claim.

Ah. In MN we don't have no inspections. Anything that has a halfway decent muffler and working lights is good to go!

CarMax might buy it. If they do, they'll do all the paperwork. If there's one nearby, it wouldn't cost anything but time to see what they'd offer for it.

If you paid the $250 deductible to have it fixed would it be inspection passing legal then?

are you under the impression that I know how to remove an entire taillight assembly and replace it? ok, just looked at the MD state inspection list - struts - shot power steering - needs work fender - rear is damaged resonator - necessitates claim and fix windows - sometimes doesn't open, sometimes doesn't close hood doesn't stay open this is just what I found at first glance. there is no way this car can be retitled in MD without major money outlay.

I know they buy cars that don't meet their standards for selling in their own places. I think they sell those at auction or to companies that auction cars. They might also buy cars for scrap, so it wouldn't hurt to call and find out. It's so easy to sell cars to them as they do all the heavy lifting with the paperwork and all. They pay somewhat less than you could get selling it yourself, but for me it has always been worth it to avoid the hassle of actually having to deal with selling cars myself and interacting with random people.

I'll give them a call

I would get it fixed and then sell it on craigslist or trade it in without getting anything else fixed. You can sell in MD without an inspection certificate. Some car guy, who can do his own work, or who knows someone will buy it, if it runs.

I hate cars!

I got a ton when my car got smushed but YMMV. based on the other mechanical work that's needed (struts, tune-up, belts, electrical possibly, timing belt) and the cosmetic condition of everything else, it's a piece of crap. the transmission is the best thing going for it.

so I think the time has finally come to put the 2003 Accord out of its misery. The car was hit by a hit and run driver last week - $1956 - and while it's covered under uninsured motorist, it's a $250 deductible. This is just one more thing on the list of thing wrong with it. rear taillight broken, lots of other cosmetic damage, electrical things starting to get wonky, needs a tune-up/fuel injector cleaning (gas mileage is crap), power steering needs a change, needs belts most likely, and it's coming up on needing another timing belt. I'm all for sending it to the scrap heap except I would like to sell the transmission, as it was replaced at 123K and now the car is around 173K. can I advertise on craigslist that I'm selling a transmission? is that something people buy? or should I try and get a mechanic to buy the car just for the transmission? Too bad it's not a Honda Civic. It would get snapped up immediately. There's a whole cult of young men souping up this particular ricer.

I have a 2012 civic that DD drives and this will be replaced with a 2008/2009 civic for DS1 to drive.

Purple metallic valve covers? My son has a thriving business catering to Civic enthusiasts. He's doing so well, he's one of the sponsors for this year's Paul Walker Memorial Ride.
