so I think the time has finally come to put the 2003 Accord out of its misery. The car was hit by a hit and run driver last week - $1956 - and while it's covered under uninsured motorist, it's a $250 deductible. This is just one more thing on the list of thing wrong with it. rear taillight broken, lots of other cosmetic damage, electrical things starting to get wonky, needs a tune-up/fuel injector cleaning (gas mileage is crap), power steering needs a change, needs belts most likely, and it's coming up on needing another timing belt. I'm all for sending it to the scrap heap except I would like to sell the transmission, as it was replaced at 123K and now the car is around 173K. can I advertise on craigslist that I'm selling a transmission? is that something people buy? or should I try and get a mechanic to buy the car just for the transmission?

Is there a junkyard near you that you could sell the car? Hubs buys car parts from a local junkyard and he sold his old car to it. You can always ask a mechanic or post on Craigslist, but a junkyard is another option.

If you take the claim for the insurance for totaling the car, usually they take the car away... at least IME. Did you get a check AND the car?

It could be that if you sell the transmission out from under them it will nullify your claim. |

It doesn't sound like anything major to fix to be street legal and lots of people don't care about cosmetics. actually it is major....in order to title it in MD it has to pass inspection and since they only do the inspection when it changes ownership, they check EVERYTHING. there is almost no way it would pass without several thousand dollars of work. and the resonator has something to do with air filtration which may impact emissions which is also due this year. |

are you under the impression that I know how to remove an entire taillight assembly and replace it? ok, just looked at the MD state inspection list - struts - shot power steering - needs work fender - rear is damaged resonator - necessitates claim and fix windows - sometimes doesn't open, sometimes doesn't close hood doesn't stay open this is just what I found at first glance. there is no way this car can be retitled in MD without major money outlay. |

I got a ton when my car got smushed but YMMV. based on the other mechanical work that's needed (struts, tune-up, belts, electrical possibly, timing belt) and the cosmetic condition of everything else, it's a piece of crap. the transmission is the best thing going for it. |

I have a 2012 civic that DD drives and this will be replaced with a 2008/2009 civic for DS1 to drive. You want some glow-in-the-dark gearshift knobs? Neon lights that go around your licence plates? Purple metallic valve covers? My son has a thriving business catering to Civic enthusiasts. He's doing so well, he's one of the sponsors for this year's Paul Walker Memorial Ride. |
