My last job was for a nonprofit so my 10 year old civic was the acceptable car while the coworkers driving a benz or bmw were seen as wasteful, maybe even like they were misappropriating donor funds to support an unrealistic lifestyle.

Yup, my mom owned a lot of very middle class rentals and had a very middle class car when she went to check on her rentals or collect rents. Her house from the outside looked like a very middle class ranch. So to tenants, she looked almost like them. This was a very good plan as it circumvented any tenant trying to pull a fast one by thinking she was rich and could "float" them.

Weird. I'd never dream of commenting on someone's vehicle unless it was in a positive way.

milee- just please tell me you didn't have one long skinny toe sticking out half an inch over the sole or your big toe entirely smushed into the peep hole and turning pink from lack of circulation like your shoe was giving birth to your foot or crusty white bits and chipped polish showing. Because I've seen all of those things.

DH and I drive vehicles that make no sense with his salary and his co-workers and employees have commented on it. This happens with us a lot as well. It's to the point where I'd like to keep my car another 30 years for the jokes.

I did a year in public accounting and it was pretty conservative. Women could wear pants though. If you were presenting in front of clients a jacket was required. If you were on site at a client's doing work, the jacket was optional but guys would have on a tie.
The head partner was old when I started and he hated people eating at their desks especially the secretaries upstairs. He said he didn't want to open the building door and smell food. We were downstairs so we could mostly get away with it. Now and then we'd make a show of eating in the conference room. The partner I worked for was very generous and often picked up the tab when we went to lunch.
I didn't usually have open toed shoes. I have much more interesting shoes and nail polish colors now that I work for the feds. If I'm on site I revert more back to my public accounting days. Jackets are required if we are on site. Ties used to be required in the office but it went business casual after I started. We also wear jeans on Friday now. And I'm wearing them today since it snowed and we opened late.
As for cars we weren't expected to drive clients around. We were however expected to have reliable transportation to get to audit sites. For myself, I put miles on a car so fast that there's no chance I will be driving around a 10 year old whatever.

What was funny was it was coming from the woman who sits next to me who I heard on the phone getting a personal loan right before she went on vacation and drives a new Mustang.

Sounds like the moral of this thread is "don't be an accountant".

For my company, we were actually told that we are paid good salaries compared to the average for our city (which is true), so we were expected to contribute to the United Way campaign. They know who does and who doesn't and make a big deal out if it if you don't. Since the donations can be directed I chose them to go to a charity I would have donated to anyway. do they make a big deal if you donate to a different charity than UW?

When I worked at the Limited we were required to wear their clothing. Making small amounts of money and having to buy expensive clothing, even with a discount, is not awesome. when I worked at Structure (now "Express Men") we were all expected to wear clothes from the family of stores. obviously the women weren't going to be shopping at Structure. we got pretty good discounts across the brands though - 30% off everything, including sale, not including clearance. for special events - Black Friday, that whole weekend - we got higher discounts on select items in specific stores, in an effort to make the employees stand out in sort of a uniform. for me, that meant all of my clothes came from NY&C, Limited, and in lesser amounts Express (like the leather pants I mentioned in another thread...) and all of my undies came from VS. I didn't think that was all that bad a deal.

I don't know. While I admit I'm not a fashion maven and often wear stuff that's not what's expected, sometimes when you're wearing a conservative suit wearing fun shoes is how you can be within the confines of the norm but still be a little irreverent.
I used to wear these with one of my conservative suits. Even though they're peep toe, they're still professional IMHO.
my sis does this. she's an English teacher at a boarding HS. the first couple years she was there, she was often mistaken for a student if she wasn't dressed professionally. so she went ultra-conservative on the clothing and had fun with the shoes. loud prints, sky-high heels, but always an understated outfit to accompany it.

I work for a clothing corporation (in the corporate office) and as long as you stick within the dress code, don't offend anyone, and do your job, no one gives a flying f__k what you drive, where you eat, etc. Can't wait to go back to school and sit next to people wearing pajamas and last night's clubbing outfit.

To me a suit means business so your shoes should mean business, too. Close-toed tamely colored 0-3.5" heels look polished and fashionable with a suit. Captain, you look like a man? DH would disagree . But I don't do makeup, curl my hair, or wear heels if I can avoid it. And, oh yea - pantyhose are the devil's invention. I loath skirts and dresses (wedding dress was a MAJOR favor to DH) and don't you DARE try to put any ribbons, bows, or frills on me. Maternity clothes were pure hell as I had to butcher alter everything I bought because apparently maternity clothes by law have to include ribbons, bows, ruffels, and flowers . My shape is solid/blocky. My cotton work shirts actually work better on a man's form than most women's shirts (which is why I iron my own - dry cleaners charging me 3.75 for a women's shirt when a men's shirt is 1.25 is just plain wrong!). I refuse to color my hair as I age, or get botox whatever. I've earned every grey hair etc. and have nothing to hide. My few attempts at painted nails/fake nails were a disaster so they are kept short and well filed. I am not graceful. In friend groups I usually related better to the guys then the girls (with a few exceptions). When DH and I dance we take turns leading. He doesn't seem to mind . My personality is so type A/Alpha that my college friends were convinced that I was either in denial or would have to marry a wife beater. Yes, I link my bling, but other than that I've never been anything even closely feminine. Fortunately DH is an exceptional man and has me figured out. Which is good because I think he managed to do so before I did.

could be. keep in mind that I was working in the men's store, so our policy might have been a little more lax in general for the female employees. I pretty much lived in stuff from the Limited. I can't wait to get back into the clothes that are currently in storage. Cassidy cut trousers and all my button-down shirts. I'm getting sick of Old Navy stuff, but I'm not spending any more money on stuff at this size. I'm working my way back down!

We have to contribute through the UW campaign. If we don't designate then it just goes to the general fund. They are big on only supporting certain charities that align with their ideals - so helping kids and the environment basically. I have mine directed to a local boys home that some friends work for and DH is involved with. But since it's first filtered through the UW campaign at work (and i am sure UW keeps their cut of it), then it is "seen" by work and therefore makes them like me more I guess. It's not a hard thing to do and I would give to this place anyway, so I can play this little game if they want.

I just don't want the forced socialization. Once in a while is ok but not every day. Geez we already have to collaborate on projects all the time. Plus I often get hungry before 11am. That isn't socially acceptable!

That isn't socially acceptable! I keep a mini pantry at my desk. I am always eating! I cant make it more than a couple of hours, especially when nursing/pregnant. The running joke is that I am a hobbit with 2nd breakfast, 1st and 2nd lunch, etc.

When I hear people squirting ketchup out of the tiny packets for 5 mins straight, I feel like I need to go into a padded room inside a mental institution. Everyone here loves their condiments!

My company donates to Harvesters each year at Xmas. No one is required to donate, but most people do as we it gets around if you don't donate.
We also have an unwritten rule that all the men in the office have to wear a tie. Our dress code is business casual, but the tie thing seems to have stuck around.

United Way is the only permissible charity with the feds. Management has changed in my office and we don't really push it that much. They do from DC but not locally. If I had to then I'd put in the couple bucks a pay period and find something in the catalog to direct it to.

Substitute lawyer for CPA and you have me. FWIW, I don't work for a Big 4 firm either.
