It has been noted that members of both genders take up more than one seat yet it identified by a single gender term. A lot of work has been done to change vocabulary to gender neutral terms such as chairperson. Perhaps a gender neutral term for this non-gender specific behavior would make men feel not attacked. I don't think so. If that is all it would take they would say "We hate that too but let's call it this". And Paul is defending the sprawling, not even a bit of apology. I am male and I am saying it. So who is this "they" you speak of? I know Paul but do we males really have to claim him?

Fix the link, paul. You do not place a link after a copy/paste that does not link to what you've copy/pasted. It's dishonest and you know it. Either fix the link or the post will be removed. I'll give you a few minutes to take care of this problem. mmhmm, Administrator Look, stop making accusations with only " " in support of them. I cut the verbiage from a site and pasted it- if, as is often the case these days, a link appears at the bottom of the text, I will sometimes let that suffice as supplying the correct link. I apologize that in this instance that does not appear to have been the case. I posted the See BS article-- as written on See BS-- with the link from the browser window. The issue is now resolved. If I'm wrong, I'll be happy to apologize. Please provide the site from which you copy/pasted - the one that contained the questioned link. Thanks.

The poster had the wrong link, as you pointed out-- that is, their posted text did not line up with the See BS link. I have since pointed this mistake out to the person. This still leaves a problem with your accusation as "fraud" implies intent. I'll thank you for pointing out mistakes when you find them, rather than immediately jumping to the conclusion that the post was intentionally misleading.

There were only 4 sites with that article on the whole Interweb. And all fingers pointed back to the same source.

No, that would not be your problem- and I fully respect that you have a certain responsibility to see to it that the mistake is corrected. You don't seem to understand the problem with erroneously accusing someone of a deliberate misrepresentation instead of pointing out that they've made a mistake, so I'll just leave it here.

www.npr.org/2014/11/23/366084646/mta-targets-man-spreading-and-other-subway-faux-pas
New York's MTA is planning a new campaign to encourage courtesy on subways. NPR's Rachel Martin gets dos and don'ts from Jake Dobkin, who writes Gothamist.com's Ask A Native New Yorker column.
The New York City subway system is a melting pot for philosophies of personal space. People have very different ideas of just how much they are entitled to. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs public transit in New York, is taking steps to clarify that issue starting in January. It's launching a public campaign targeting a couple of particularly bad behaviors. One - swinging backpacks - those should be removed before entering the train. Two - the phenomenon bloggers call man spreading, and the MTA calls - well,
DOBKIN: Men spreading is this, like, weird thing that men do where they start to spread their legs, and they can sometimes take up two or even three - if they're an exceptionally good man spreader, they can take up three seats.
MARTIN: So in the universe of subway faux pas, where does this rank?
DOBKIN: I'd say this is the tip of a very disgusting iceberg of bad behavior. I actually have a whole list if you've got 45 minutes.
MARTIN: Maybe not 45, but what are a couple of examples of things that have really even shocked you?
DOBKIN: So why don't we start with the weird animals? Just in the last year I've gotten pictures of a dead shark riding the A train, a guy who had, like, a pet rat that kept crawling into his mouth. We've got transporting weird stuff. I've seen people transporting inflatable pool toys, some La-Z-Boy chairs, washing machine.

Good post, Opti - it points out that the issue isn't "manspreading", nor is it gender-specific. The issue is rude behavior. And after years of growing up, and growing wiser- I've learned that you cannot regulate good behavior. In fact, spreading out on the subway is probably a response to rude and/or just plain thoughtless behavior that's simply gotten out of hand. If everyone around you is rude, you tend to create space as a defense mechanism. That's probably where these habits started. My own view of personal space is that it often has to be defended- not so much from rude people, but from zombies. These are people that basically float through the world like butterflies landing wherever the wind takes them without giving it a second thought. Let me be clear about something- I take responsibility for myself and I don't deliberately offend-- if it's crowded, I much prefer to stand anyway. I'm polite. However, when I'm on a half empty train, or other highly accommodating public space with plenty of other options- I tend to be a vicious creator and defender of personal space- I'm tall, and I have knees and elbows; and I was worse when I commanded a stroller. There's nothing worse than the whole train car being empty, someone boarding that smells like a week old hot dog sitting down RIGHT NEXT TO YOU with all their shit, which inevitably spills over onto your lap. My thought is that I shouldn't have to think for other people, but I do, so rather than expose myself to the necessity of explaining to them there's 85 feet of empty train car here, can't you find someplace else to sit- or having to get up and move, it's easier just to create a bubble of protection around me. Another pet peeve of mine is parking- when someone either stalks you out to your car; or pulls in RIGHT NEXT TO YOU after you just pulled in and parked yourself. Generally speaking, I have solved the issue by ordering stuff online, and parking in the hinterlands when I do have to go someplace. God forbid an American walk an extra 10 yards- so they don't generally do this to me out there. If I do have to park closer, or it's more crowded- I park and FLING my door wide open almost immediately for these idiots and make them wait.

I can't quite do that, paul, because the indications are it wasn't a "mistake". As I said, if you could link to where you got the article that included the link (and, were it not for Reply #4), I'd find it easy to apologize. As it is, I stand by what I've said. Then, I'll leave it there.

I guess some people really do take it seriously. Years from now, when these activists are lying on their deathbeds and reflecting on the sum of their lives, I wonder if they'll think, "Manspreading. For years I fought it. I shamed the manspreaders. I die knowing my life had purpose."?
