Hmmmm - by now (three hours later) I would have thought I'd have a few "amen" responses. I must have hit a nerve with quite a few text and drive people. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/rofl.gif)

I don't text and drive, it's usually Facebook or proboards but never texting (sent from a highway in mid-America).

I call my niece and she can talk to me without taking her eyes off the road. Her techy husband set it up.

Talking on a hands-free phone is not distracted driving. It's no different than talking to a passenger sitting next to you, or singing along to the radio while driving.

Nothing about driving is risk-free. It's a risk we take every day when we get behind the wheel. We don't know what's' going to happen on the road.
And since when has talking become a "complex task"? I guess they should make it a law not to speak to a passenger, or sing while driving, then - or drive while chewing gum. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)
And the link doesn't specify what the distracted drivers in the 9 killed or 1000 injured were doing while driving. It doesn't specify they were texting or talking on the phone.
They could have been checking out what the kids in the back seat were doing. Or picking up a dropped cigarette from the floor, or changing the station on the radio, or any number of other things.

And someone could skid on a patch of ice, or swerve to dodge a child or dog that ran into the street, and end up killing me too. I fail to see your logic.
There are numerous things that cause "distracted driving" or accidents. I don't see having your cell on hands-free-text mode or speaker phone for calling someone as two of them.
I change the radio station sometimes when I drive - especially if I'm in a different city (I want to find a good rock station). I also press a button to change the CD player - oh - and I sing along to the music - I guess I should have my license revoked. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

no talking to a passenger no radio no phone (obviously) no humming or singing to yourself?

because the OP has nothing to do with drunk driving. and, in fact, drunk driving isn't even in the same league as this stuff. i'll also point out that i made a recent post in the thanksgiving thread against it, as well.
the point is, all of what i posted would be considered "distracted driving" then, according to you. so if you want to complain about those things, you had better not be a hypocrite and do them yourself.

Drivers who talk on either handheld or hands-free cellular phones are as impaired as drunken drivers, according to experimental research conducted by Drs. Frank Drews, David Strayer, and Dennis L. Crouch of the University of Utah. The study reinforced earlier research showing that hands-free cell phones are just as distracting as handheld cell phones “If legislators really want to address driver distraction, then they should consider outlawing cell phone use while driving.” says Dr. Drews. Both handheld and hands-free cell phones impaired driving, with no significant difference in the degree of impairment. That “calls into question driving regulations that prohibited handheld cell phones and permit hands-free cell phones,” the researchers write. ALCOHOL PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONSDRIVERS ON CELL PHONES ARE AS BAD AS DRUNKSUTAH PSYCHOLOGISTS WARN AGAINST CELL PHONE USE WHILE DRIVING June 29, 2006 -- Three years after the preliminary results first were presented at a scientific meeting and drew wide attention, University of Utah psychologists have published a study showing that motorists who talk on handheld or hands-free cellular phones are as impaired as drunken drivers. "We found that people are as impaired when they drive and talk on a cell phone as they are when they drive intoxicated at the legal blood-alcohol limit” of 0.08 percent, which is the minimum level that defines illegal drunken driving in most U.S. states, says study co-author Frank Drews, an assistant professor of psychology. “If legislators really want to address driver distraction, then they should consider outlawing cell phone use while driving.” Psychology Professor David Strayer, the study's lead author, adds: “Just like you put yourself and other people at risk when you drive drunk, you put yourself and others at risk when you use a cell phone and drive. The level of impairment is very similar.” “Clearly the safest course of action is to not use a cell phone while driving,” concludes the study by Strayer, Drews and Dennis Crouch, a research associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology. The study was set for publication June 29 in the summer 2006 issue of Human Factors: The Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. The study reinforced earlier research by Strayer and Drews showing that hands-free cell phones are just as distracting as handheld cell phones because the conversation itself – not just manipulation of a handheld phone – distracts drivers from road conditions. THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAHA Comparison of the Cell Phone Driver and the Drunk DriverObjective: The objective of this research was to determine the relative impairment associated with conversing on a cellular telephone while driving. Background: Epidemiological evidence suggests that the relative risk of being in a traffic accident while using a cell phone is similar to the hazard associated with driving with a blood alcohol level at the legal limit. The purpose of this research was to provide a direct comparison of the driving performance of a cell phone driver and a drunk driver in a controlled laboratory setting. Method: We used a high-fidelity driving simulator to compare the performance of cell phone drivers with drivers who were intoxicated from ethanol (i.e., blood alcohol concentration at 0.08% weight/volume). Results: When drivers were conversing on either a handheld or hands-free cell phone, their braking reactions were delayed and they were involved in more traffic accidents than when they were not conversing on a cell phone. By contrast, when drivers were intoxicated from ethanol they exhibited a more aggressive driving style, following closer to the vehicle immediately in front of them and applying more force while braking. Conclusion: When driving conditions and time on task were controlled for, the impairments associated with using a cell phone while driving can be as profound as those associated with driving while drunk. Application: This research may help to provide guidance for regulation addressing driver distraction caused by cell phone conversations. UNIVERSITY OF UTAHProbably your same person that said OH I can drive BETTER after few drinks!

Tiki. you need to stop trolling because i'm not going to put up with it.
by your own statements and lengthy studies of all sorts of crap, ANYTHING that takes the driver's attention away from driving - which includes texting, as well as all the things i listed - should not be done. i'm not going to allow you to attack me for pointing out your failure to see the obvious. so you are deaf, no music etc for you. fine. what about signing to a passenger while you're driving? that would be distracted driving too.
and regardless of whether drunk driving is as bad (worse, in my opinion), it's still not the same as this. that is IMPAIRED driving. not just distracted. and this post is about distracted driving. quit trying to change the subject.
