Some people are just plain stupid. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/rolleyes.gif) My parents were very affluent, I grew up having everything. Doesn't mean I had the same lifestyle expectations when i started my career. Granted I had the advantage of zero student loans, but I did my fair share of living in an apartment, driving an older car, saving for stuff etc. Nor did my parents give me any money to fund my lifestyle! Nobody told her to buy such an expensive home. And where are her parents? Can't they knock some sense into her head? You don't HAVE to grow up poor to understand the value of money. A lot of it comes from common sense and values instilled by the parents.

Sounds like she chased the dream of living like her parents, and the dream stopped, turned into a case of brick-walled reality and clonked her in the noggin. Sheesh, I want that kitchen, and I already renovated mine once. As we would say in America, she's got champagne taste on a beer budget. And that beer isn't Guinness. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/sad.png)

I don't get why they don't sell? Is it really that important for each kids to have their own room? When they are the same sex?

The remodel on that house wasn't just making it livable - what's up with that wall o'ovens behind her? ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/shocked.gif) No, one of my wife relatives have the same or somewhat the same set up. It is a built in cappuccino machine, next to it is the microwave. And underneath you have the two regular size ovens because 1 is just not enough.

And if the house is truly worth 1M and they owe 500k on it, why not take the equity and run. Maybe they can find a 5 bedroom house there for 500k. My wife cousin needed a 4 bedroom house because she never had her own bedroom and wanted her kids to have that. But at least she could afford it. I have a 3 bedroom house, more than 1 kid, even opposite sex, they will share a room for awhile!

Not to mention letting your businesses slide while you remodel then wondering why you are broke. And how many siblings did she and her husband have? It's a lot easier to provide for 1 or 2 kids than it is for 4 kids.

As I'm looking on the internet for places that DH and I might live, I'm looking at homes/what you get for the money in the areas we are looking at. I came across a foreclosure property - bought in 2000 for like $185k. They now owe over $215k. 14 YEARS and you are $30k in the hole on the house more than when you started. HOLY CRAP. I cannot fathom that. What were they doing the last 15 years.

Something about looking at monthly expenses as well as down payment and income.

They will do anything to hold on to a house, remodel the house, upgrade the house. Its like a status symbol for some. I don't understand it. But for such people a top notch home is a measure of their success. No matter they are struggling with the basics underneath and don't have two pennies to rub together.

This has GOT to be the Onion.
"It seems painfully ironic to me that as I step out of the eye-wateringly expensive (£4,500 since you ask) bifold doors, into my beautiful garden, that I can't afford to replace the boots that are letting in dew from the lawn thanks to the holes in both the soles."

My husband, Mike, runs his own business, so his income can fluctuate hugely, while my earnings as a freelance writer are unpredictable.Ever notice that in nearly every article of this type the "main characters" work freelance, own their own business, etc.? And never once do they consider getting a wage job to stabilize their unsteady income. She's certainly well fed.HoneyBBQ Glad I'm not the only one that noticed.

It's difficult to feel a whole lot of sympathy for them. The trouble their in seems to be of their own doing.

Shoot, I have 2 boys and a 3 bedroom house. The plan is to buy bunkbeds when the younger one is out of the crib and have them share a room for a few years. It just seems like it would be fun for them. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/idunno.gif)

I guess my bullshitmeter goes off. She has beautiful skin and hair and looks like she does lots of care for herself... and shopping, etc.

Hmmm - I wonder what the parents did for a living. I suspect that it was more along the lines of the doctors and lawyers that were the parents of the DH's classmates in private school. I'd bet there wasn't a shopkeeper or freelance (I suspect that we can insert "hobbyist" here) writer among them. If you want to live large, maybe you ought to select careers that pay well enough to allow you to live large. So they're house poor. Haven't we all been there at one time or another? At least their house has a refrigerator in it. My first house didn't have one for the first six months that I lived in it. Then, after six months, I could afford the $75 it cost me for a used refrigerator. And it wasn't the snazzy built in model. The second house, five years later, got some furniture. More than a kitchen table, kitchen chairs, a bed and a dresser. A real couch in the living room and a table and chairs in the dining room. Even an end table and a lamp! The nice stools around the kitchen island didn't come for more than 25 years. And we haven't made it to the sleek, designer stools yet. A bedroom for each son is a requirement? With two brothers, our room was more like a bunk house when I was growing up. Then there were the college room mates. I didn't have a bedroom to myself until I was nearly 25 years old. Then there is the decision to have more than one or two children. While it isn't stated, she appears to have been an only child while he was one of two children. Do you think that the cost of raising four kids might have something to do with your family finances? Good grief, whine, whine, whine. If you want to buy a daily latte, maybe you ought to get off your rubenque behind and get a full time job.

So the thread didn't go this way, but my parents told me that with my new job I'm almost making what my dad was when he retired. Who makes more now is debatable because I say they can't count my retirement $$$ since I don't live on that. Their first remark after telling me congrats was that I'm now the one paying for lunch out. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png) The first thing my brother said when my parents told him (why they told him the $ amount I have no idea) was "whoa! I'm expecting awesome Christmas presents now!" I don't think he realizes his kid is taking most of the Christmas dollars allocated to him (and he was already splitting his money with his wife!) ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/rofl.gif)

I guess the UK doesn't have rentals? I had a come-to-Jesus that I wouldn't do as well as my parents when I was in my mid-20's. That is when I stopped trying to look like I was doing as well as my friends. I thought it would be embarrassing or whatever. It turned out - not only did they not care, but some of them confessed their debt level to me. After years of old cars and small houses, it turns out I may end up doing just as well as my parents - but that doesn't mean I am going to run out and buy a million dollar house.

Well, I have a 5 bedroom house and 2 kids and they choose to share most nights. Older son has the entire lower level of the house with 3 bedrooms a bath and the family room and he takes the upper bunk in his brother's room half the time.
