Oy! Another bloody hypocrite. This thread is full of us. I guess I'm a hypocrite when it comes to Football too.... I don't pay attention to the games or the teams - yet every year I attend a Super Bowl party and wear some sort of Football jersey thing (I call it Camoflauge) that I was gifted years ago, so I'd have something football related to wear to said party. Some years, if I can figure out the 'colors' of the teams playing I'll try to wear one or two of those colors in regular clothing instead of the jersey thing. Me, too. Why, I don't even know how many innings there are in a football game, but I've been to my share of Super Bowl parties. I just like to celebrate and eat good food.

I don't know squat about football either, but I do know they don't have innings - that's baseball.
They have 4 quarters. That's about the extent of my football knowledge.
I go to Grey Cup or Super Bowl parties strictly for the food and drink - I don't have a clue about what actually goes on in the game.

I'm an NHL fanatic! I saw some footage of Beliveau's funeral on the news here today. It was all the pomp & circumstance of a royal wedding as the priests walked up the cathedral aisle.

I dont' think it is odd at all that an atheist or agnostic would celebrate Christmas. For most people, Christmas is not so much about Jesus, as traditions, family, friends, parties, goodwill, presents, comfort food and twinkly lights. Plus when 99% of everyone in your community is doing it - you tend to go along.

I do go to the Christmas eve service at my church - not so much for what the minister has to say, but for the atmosphere, and decorations, and candles we light for Silent Night, and music, and to see the nice folks I've grown up with. I will add (and I don't quite know how to word this, so I may not be saying what I'm trying to say) that our minister does a great job of bringing religion/different religions' ideas and themes into his sermons, but they never lean heavily on god or the bible - the point is usually some relevant societal or moral thing or how we frame things and view things and what we can do to be good and help others and live a spiritual life, no matter what that means individually for anyone. He's also my age, wears Chucks to church once in a while, has long hair and goes to the gaming convention in Boston because he's into Magic and other tabletop games, so he's ok by us. I don't know if I would consider it good that a pastor at a church doesn't lean heavily on God or the Bible during a sermon. I mean, if you're a Christian and you can't even talk about that in your own church, then what are you even doing? Go out and be a motivational speaker somewhere. I don't know, the comment just struck me as funny. If you just want a feel-good message, then just stay home and watch the hallmark channel. If you read my past post, I'm Unitarian Universalist. Look it up. Extraordinarily different from 'Christian'.

Unitarian Universalists are the left wing progressive hippies of the Christian world.

Now we just need a UU to come in and really fix it!

I pretty much agree with all of it. (although 'Unitarian Universalists are the left wing progressive hippies of the religious world.' is probably the most accurate)

I didn't actually even consider that. Bad UU, not considering all world religions! Yes they might, and we'd be OK with that.

I have always had Christmas but never really associated it with religion. Our family had trees, gifts, food and company from out of town. We didn't attend any church or have any prayers. I don't think I could have told you if anyone was Christian and now when most are dead don't really know either. I had one aunt that was Christian, a great aunt was Mormon now I have a brother and three of his kids who are Mormon. I don't even know if Mormons are Christians. I will go to my other brother's house his son is 45 and only went to Sunday school until 5 when they scared him with threats of devils and hell so he wasn't forced to go back, don't think the daughter ever went and her kids haven't. The granddaughter noticed and said she hadn't been and thought she should go. I don't think the kids have been told about anything religious so when a person dies they are just told they died not that they went to hell because they didn't believe.
