I don't know. We celebrate Halloween and don't worship Satan...or whatever that came from. LOL I'm in the camp of taking whatever holiday I can get. My family is mostly Christian, my kids were baptized Catholic, and can decide on their own, but I don't see anything wrong with the message of Christmas to say "no, kids, we're sitting this one out". When I was in 6th grade, a boy in my class had to go to the Office ANYTIME there was a celebration--classmate birthday, Halloween party, Christmas party, etc. He kept to himself so we never really knew why. I always felt really sorry for him that he missed out on the fun stuff in school. I recall finding out he was a Jehovah's Witness but that was long before their faith was known among my peer group. I tell you this because about the ONLY people on the planet who don't celebrate a winter holiday of any sort are JWs. Oh, and dannylion, I do believe a velvety chocolate Yule log qualifies as cake.

Absolutely! And a particularly elevated form of cake at that.
Now I want velvety chocolate Yule log. With chocolate mousse rolled up inside and marzipan mushrooms artfully arranged on the ganache bark.

The early Christian Puritans outlawed Christmas altogether.

Just like most Christians aren't hardcore evangelical Christians, most Atheists are not evangelical hardcore atheists.

wow, talk about Democrats and progressives being a little judgemental and demanding in their desires to not celebrate a Christian holiday, but then go ahead and do it their way anyway...... ......

Exactly. Honestly, IME it's the not very devout people who consider Christmas a Christian holiday. The more devout people are just like your link.

Things have been a bit slow recently, so I figured I'd stir the pot a little.
I always thought it was a little strange to see many people who identify themselves as atheists or agnostic still celebrating Christmas, or at least do the things with the gift giving, Christmas trees, Christmas parties, stockings, ect. You would think if you were "truly" atheist or agnostic, you would not celebrate Christmas in any way, shape or form, even preferring to work that day.
Don't get me wrong though, it's a free country, people can do what they want. It just seems a bit disingenuous to me for an atheist or agnostic to celebrate Christmas. How do they reconcile their celebratory activities with their religious beliefs (or lack there of in this case)? Given all that has nothing really to do with celebrating the birth of Christ I would think its pretty easy.
Now if they were doing living manager scenes, singing religious Christmas hymns then I'd agree they are celebrating Christ's birth.

I am an atheist and I have always celebrated Christmas. I love Christmas, but I equally enjoy New Year's Eve. I also celebrate Epiphany on January 6.
My whole family is atheist but we like the celebration. For the children is all about Santa and the Three Magic Kings. For us it's a time when we all get together, eat good food, talk, laugh. I would be very sad if I couldn't celebrate Christmas. But it doesn't have any religious significance for me.

My family has several closet Atheists, I'm the only one that has actually come out (even my dad still won't). Xmas is a day off and an excuse for the family to get together, I just don't go to church when the breakfast/present opening is done.
Just because we don't believe in one God or another doesn't mean we don't like a good party.

How do they reconcile their celebratory activities with their religious beliefs (or lack there of in this case)? They probably just enjoy the celebration in whatever manner they do it. In addition, they probably don't give a s$%t what you or anyone else thinks about it.

But what do you tell your kids when they inevitably ask "why do we celebrate Christmas?" Surely you don't say you're kind of celebrating a Christian holiday, but we're not Christians. Do kids of atheists really ask that? My children have never once questioned an occasion for candy, cookies and gifts. They might ask if we harped on the meaning of life, or whatever. They might ask if we were the only family on the block that celebrated this holiday. If my kids asked why we celebrated Christmas, I would ask them why we wouldn't celebrate Christmas. I have no idea why we celebrate Halloween. Valentine's day is totally made up. New Year's is kind of random.
