Did you ever make a drastic change in your hair color? If so, why?
I saw a girl this weekend that went from blonde to dark brown. I did not even recognize her at first. She is naturally blonde and has been blonde her whole life. (Not to mention, the upkeep would suck.)
Why would someone do this drastic change? She is in her 40s, so would it be some kind of mid-life change?

Why not? Just for fun maybe?

My wife changes her hair color all the time. Why? Because she can.

Why not? Just for fun maybe? I was wondering if it was for attention. Or maybe just needed to make a major change in her life and hair color was all she could control. IDK ?

Maybe just to try something new?
I've never done it. My hair is black, so it would have to be bleached to get any other colors in it. I'm not cool with that, so I just leave it alone. I do have white highlights though. Does that count?

There is no "deep" reason. Just because. My skin tone wouldn't support changing my hair color but some people can pull it off.

I never had the urge. All I want to do is cover up my gray. Having the roots touched up is a pain, so I was wonder why someone would do that on purpose.

I used to dye my hair to cover it up. Then I pictured myself as an old lady with jet black hair that is an obvious dye job. I decided I'd rather have salt and pepper hair when I got older and look more natural. I'm well on my way there. I'm 36 and have more grey than my dad.

I henna'd my hair a few months ago. It was a pretty drastic change. Right after I henna its a deep red/purple and fades to more oranges before I henna again. I ordered buy 2 get one last time, but it didn't arrive before vaca and so by the time I got back it was pretty faded and I think I like that color, so after I'm done with the henna I have, i'll probably let fade and then switch colors (the henna I currently use is cut with hibiscus).. (my roots are also less visible with that color)
I'm usually blond, which has become a darker blond over the years, but still blond. I don't know why I did it? Cause I can? ... I tell people I was in need of doing something entirely age inappropriate... or that it was cheaper than a sports car or an affair...
My 13 year old has been dying her hair for almost 3 years now... currently its shades of blue and purple.

You let your 13 yr old dye their hair purple? I don't think our school allows that here.

I would embrace the grey, but it would make me look older. And, let's face it, that is a real issue in the youth obsessed culture and workplace.

I have no desire to look old especially if I don't feel old. and a hair appointment once a month isn't really all that much trouble.

I color my own hair. Easy peasy. I used to but it doesn't come out nearly as good as when my stylist does it, and also the mess is a pain. this last time I got foil highlights as I was tired of the single color - no way I'm doing that at home.

Works for me. I can do a root touch up pretty easily and for about $10.

Works for me. I can do a root touch up pretty easily and for about $10. have you compared your root color to your ends color? the color fades over time so what you're putting on your roots may be shades darker than what's at your ends. I never noticed until my stylist pointed it out (and showed me by putting the ends up at the roots).

If she has never done it before, it seems like some kind of mid-life crisis. Mid-life crises make people do some crazy things! That could be a whole thread unto itself!

My original color was brown with auburn highlights. In the summer it was more auburn. My eyebrows are and always have been so light as to be practically invisible.
I've lightened my hair to a dark blonde with a hint of red. It will never be completely blonde, red cannot be disguised. The color is in keeping with the color of my eyebrows so now they are more obvious.
The color suits me so well that people who didn't know me before are shocked that this isn't my natural color.

Has she always been an attention whore? Maybe she just wanted to try something new and wanted to know if it was a good look for her. There have been times where I thought I was totally cute only to have an honest friend tell me I'm wrong.

I imagine there are as many reasons for drastically changing one's hair color as their are available hair colors. As long as it makes the person feel good, I'm all for it. I'm just too lazy to bother.

I went from brown to fiery red. I did it because I wanted to try something different with my hair and surprise DH who has a thing for red heads.
I liked it so much I've kept my hair red for a couple of years now. I get it done for $35 at the beauty school. Sometimes I add highlights. Right now I have a blond panel that I plan on keeping for awhile.
I like trying new things with my hair. It's just hair. It'll always grow back and I can always let it return to my natural color which I probably will at some point.
I do like it when people compliment me on the color. I hate my natural color at times it's what my grandmother called "dishwater blond". Who wouldn't love a hair color someone associates with dirty used water?
I must be an attention whore apparently.

why does coloring one's hair necessitate a psychoanalysis to determine why? Peeps do it all the time, who cares? It's just hair. It's not like they're quitting their jobs, selling the house and moving to a remote cabin in the mountains. I work with a couple women that change their hair color almost every month.

I think 'people' do it all the time. I think individual persons who do not make a habit of it and suddenly do something drastic might make one wonder, hum..
Shoob... my kids don't go to school. But I don't think there are limits there (and I don't think there should be!) ... as blue hair seems to be everywhere around here.
I would not be happy if a school could say how ones hair can be colored...

I really don't care what kids or people do with their hair. It's just hair. But, our school does have rules in that regard as it being a distraction.

My niece did this. She went from blonde to brown and the change was striking. Her very light eyes with dark hair was gorgeous. She kept it up for about 2 years, but went back to her normal color this year.
