I've colored my hair twice in my life - once in my 20s (various shades of red), once in my 30s (dark brown.)
In my 20s, it was definitely just for fun. In my 30s, I had just had my 1st kid and, in retrospect, I was trying to physically manifest an internal change. Both lasted 6 months to a year before I got tired of upkeep and had them stripped out.
I always wanted blue streaks. Maybe I'll do it on maternity leave this year for #2. Because my job would definitely flinch HARD.

My niece did this. She went from blonde to brown and the change was striking. Her very light eyes with dark hair was gorgeous. She kept it up for about 2 years, but went back to her normal color this year. My oldest grandson's mother did this, too. She is naturally very light blonde with super light blue eyes. Occasionally she colors her hair medium brown or red. Either color looks very pretty!

I color my hair myself also, just for fun. I have no gray, but it's naturally a medium brown. I color it with both blond highlights and dark (or light) auburn, depending on the season. I like the changes, but I do not do it for attention. It's just for me.

My BFF in Houston posted a pic on her Facebook today of the two of us at Christmas 25 years ago. I'm sporting my two tone hair. lol I had dyed it black for Halloween & then I bleached out & dyed the underside/bottom of my hair Axl Rose red for Thanksgiving. I did the red to try and annoy my step grampa at Thanksgiving. It didn't even phase him at all. In fact, he told me it "looked nice"...bless his heart. lol

I started going gray in early 20s. Now in my 50's I would probably be over 50% gray. I color my hair to be my "natural" color of brown. My goal is to look like I don't color it.
I have seen two young (early 20s) women recently who intentionally colored their hair gray. It was very striking and they got noticed a lot (guessing that is why they did it). It was almost blue/gray.

My hair is white. I am in my mid-30's. I started going gray when I was 13. I would love gray hair these days, but I've got white hair. I color it, but I'm going to have to make a pretty significant color change in the next year or so because my hair no longer accepts the hair dye. I'm currently dying my hair brown. I think I'll have to go to a dark blond and then eventually a light blond.
Sometimes people change their hair color because it's fun and they can. Some of us change our hair color because we don't have much choice.

Some of us change our hair color because we don't have much choice. Emma, I am just curious but, how do you not have a choice? You either color it or you don't. I colored mine black in my freshman year of college because I had a choice. Ok, my mother made me strip the color out and re-dye it before my father could see it which would denote no choice but I didn't want to hear him piss and moan at me. DEFINITELY a choice. Right now my hair is a delightful mix of gray and crap brown, early 40s. I have a choice of coloring it or not. I most likely will, eventually, when I can stay awake long enough during the day to do it. I can't afford salon coloring. I am hoping my stripe will come back but it's hard to tell since I wear my hat in a ponytail with a baseball cap at work and I'm in bed when I'm at home. I started going gray in high school and my hair is now starting to thin out thanks to genetics. I am sure I will look lovely with the beautiful pink scalp and the 10 strands of hair held in place with helmet head hairspray, just like dear old gramma.

I have naturally red hair - kind of the color of a new copper penny. As I started to go white I began coloring it to cover the gray and most people don't notice, especially people I haven't seen in a long time. Now I'm mostly gray/white with some red still at the crown of my head although the red has darkened as I've gotten older so I color it a little darker than the color it was when I was younger. I've tried not coloring my hair and when it grows out it looks pretty awful. I typically get mistaken for someone 5 - 10 years younger than my actual age of 67, so I'll keep coloring it until I can't afford it any longer.
I usually go about every 5 weeks for a cut and color. I have very short hair and it's pretty easy, but kind of expensive. I can't use most kinds of home hair color stuff as I'm allergic and I don't look good in long hair. With my curly/wiry hair, it always looks messy when it's long, so I keep it short. Love that I don't have to do anything other than wash, comb and go.

Empress...my hair looks like it's falling out in its natural state plus it adds a good 25 years to my face. It doesn't look professional, and I think I would find it exceptionally difficult to maintain my current career trajectory. Technically it's a choice, the same way wearing professional clothes are a choice in the workplace. Appearances matter even if we don't want them too.
there is also a big difference between a head of hair that is a mix of gray and the original color and white. Salt and pepper hair would be so much easier to work with. Or at least it was when I had salt and pepper hair in my 20s.

I don't like my natural color (mousy brown) so I started highlighting my hair at the age of 14. In my late 20's I had red hair (think Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman). I kept it for about 2 years but red is just too hard to keep up. It fades out way too fast so I tried a chestnut color. It was okay but I liked blond better so went back to highlighting. Then about a year ago I decided I wanted strawberry blond. The hairdresser, who always did good highlights, couldn't get the strawberry part right and I ended up with carrot top hair. After about 10 washes it actually looked pretty good though. I found someone who was able to master the strawberry blond and I had that for about 6 months. Now I am back to highlights mixed in with my natural color. That is probably where I will stay forever now. I have experimented enough now.

My dark brown hair has just grown very dull being cooped up indoors away from the sun. Once I committed to coloring I figured I might as well have fun with it and try something new. It is just hair after all.

I love my natural color and never dyed my hair until last year. It's naturally dark, very thick and healthy. But... I am hooked on highlights and coloring now - I love that I can go a different color and change my entire appearance. I've been told numerous times that it gives me a softer look. Even my husband has commented that my natural color gives me a starkly different appearance and he enjoys it lighter. I'll probably keep up the color for sometime, although I am not a fan of how the bleach changes the texture a bit and dries out my hair. I have to use different products now to keep it healthy looking and from drying out. Coloring does help fill in my whites and grays that are showing up over the last few years.

Coconut oil is great on hair. Very time daughter colors or bleaches I figure this is the time it will have to be all cut off, but an application or two of coconut oil brings it back from dry.

I'm not a critic of what someone does with their hair color - I do think going from being naturally blonde most of your life to a dark brown in one step is a bit of a shock to anyone who knows you or works with you.
I'd personally probably do it in gradual steps slowly going one shade darker with each color treatment.
My hair's naturally auburn. I do lighter shades in the summer, or do highlights, and in the autumn/winter season, I try to keep it more natural - but still add a hint of color or reddish highlights to give it more sheen.
Natural blondes or red-heads tend to have fairer skin-tones, and going to a dark color tends to make it look too fake, harsh or unnatural.

I have curly hair and when I was young it was auburn. People used to ask my mother when I was 4/5 y/o if she colored and permed my hair. Anyway, in high school I used to get bleach blonde streaks put in just for something different. It's been getting darker as I get older and now in my 30's it barely had any red in it at all and it's almost like I'm approaching a very dark rich brown or black but you can still tell the base is from red rather than blonde. Anyway, I haven't colored in probably 15 years.

Did you ever make a drastic change in your hair color? If so, why? I saw a girl this weekend that went from blonde to dark brown. I did not even recognize her at first. She is naturally blonde and has been blonde her whole life. (Not to mention, the upkeep would suck.) Why would someone do this drastic change? She is in her 40s, so would it be some kind of mid-life change? After my divorce years ago (early 30's), I had my waist long hair cut to my shoulders and went from a bleach blonde to strawberry blonde. The first thing I noticed is men didn't look at me as much. OTOH, it must not have made that much of a difference b/c I met my now DH with that 'do so... And, yes, blondes DO have more fun.

I have a job that requires me to wear a baseball cap so nobody sees my hair (Thank God because it looks like crap). I wind up wearing flour and pastry cream by the end of the night so nice clothes are out too. I do have my nice clothes on hand though so if I find a desk job again at least I will be somewhat ready.

My natural color is a boring medium brown. I've been dying it since I was a teenager.
Had henna red hair most of my teen years. I thought it looked sophisticated.
When my daughter was little I dyed my hair blonde because she was upset that my hair was different than hers.
I dyed my hair black when I was pregnant and 3 weeks past my due date... I don't know why I picked that color other than I was extremely frustrated felt fat & ugly & wanted a drastic change. Did it black again years later when a boyfriend was saying how much he liked that look.
I dyed my hair dark brown when I was going through a phase of wanting to be low maintenance & not have to deal with my roots. After I started going gray that didn't make sense anymore and lighter hair usually looks better as you get older.
I used sun-in once and my hair turned strawberry blonde. Random strangers kept coming up to me to tell me how pretty my hair was. I've had it strawberry blonde for the last few years and I don't think I'll be changing it again until I'm fully grey. I went to get my colors done & the lady said this is probably the most flattering color for my coloring and I'm still getting random strangers telling me how pretty my hair is... a girl in the craft store the other night was so excited about the color she had me write down the info L'Oréal preference 9GR... lol

Is qofcc suggesting my henna red hair is not sophisticated?

Is qofcc suggesting my henna red hair is not sophisticated? I'm pretty sure I said I think it does look sophisticated. I kept mine that way for years until my daughter asked me to dye mine to match hers

I was playing ... I'm not sure I'd call mine sophisticated, but maybe that's just not a word that I'd generally apply to myself

What kind of question is that? What kind of answer will you be satisfied with? Your friend is 40. Mid-Life? I am 48, so is it like pre-departure crisis? What do you do for fun? Asking pointless questions?

I agree. There doesn't have to be some deep reason. Just because. Just because you want to try something different. Just because you feel like. Just because you want to get out of your comfortable box.

I had the same thoughts, lol... her 'up north' and 'down south' hair... I always wanted to ask about south hair style (since Chelsea Handler said 'bush is back? who determines THAT?) but it would be probably frown upon by mods?

Just because you want to get out of your comfortable box. I am working with guys so most where going 'great look' or 'are you on a witness protection' and some where like why? So I was like: do you really expect get an answer to your question? And they were just staring. Then we laughed. If I see it on people I would go 'cool', 'looking good'...but asking why? Like 'have your husband dumped you because of your old hair'? Pfff
