...:::"Ex: my mom always said she is ok with getting appliances/kitchen stuff / bed sheets and others as gifts for her birthday or Christmas from people in general but her husband better think twice before doing that.":::...
I made this mistake a few years ago. I thought that because she expressed wanting something, that it would make a good birthday present. Nope! I mean, while she is happy to get it as a present, birthday and christmas presents need to be splurges that are totally fun and just for her. Practicality is for other gifts.
She's gotten loads better and this year we are doing birthday credits since there really wasn't much we wanted around the times of our birthdays. Not sure when she is going to redeem her credit, but at least its not during the spending orgy that is December.

Appliances come from the household items fund. The only thing for the "house" that I am ok with as a gift, is the pool I have been asking for for years. That I was ok with my birthday, anniversary, and Christmas presents being combined. It really is for me, but as a family, it will get a lot of use, though since DH didn't grow up with one like I did, he doesn't see it.

We do a house thing often. Sometimes it's something I like more than DH and sometimes the opposite. We started this after a job loss left finances kind of tight for awhile and continued it just because . We also do little individual more personal gifts to each other.
