This year I spent (probably) around $60 on candy. I bought a bunch of variety packs. We always give out multiples (except the adults not in costumes carrying newborns. They get one.) And my husband will give out a handful if you amuse him.
I just did the calculations, and if I go to Sam's Club, I can buy over 100 full sized candy bars for $75. Next year, I'm thinking about going full bars. First 100 kids get 1 bar, and then we close up.
Anyone ever do full bar? Do you see repeat kids, or do more adults show up in weak costumes?

One of our neighbors gives out full bars. He's known as the "good house." He's been doing it for a while.
We get between 55 and 70 trick or treaters every year.
I don't know that I would get a full size bars..

Growing up there was one old dude who lived alone and would invite trick or treaters into his dining room where on his table were 7 or 8 bowls full of full size candy bars. We would go around the table and get one of each. We loved that house (especially compared to the old lady down the street who gave out 10 pennies wrapped in a napkin.) In retrospect, the old dude was probably a little creepy.

Got a 30 pack of full size twix, m&m's, snickers and milky way, a 12 pack of full size sour patch kids and then a fun size bag of nestlies crunch "just in case." We only had 12 trick or treaters. We gave one to each, but I guess we should have given 2 to each.

Haha, we only had 12 kids, too! Lots of left overs here, not sure why? We in the past had so many more, are new parents not taking kids trick or treating?

Haha, we only had 12 kids, too! Lots of left overs here, not sure why? We in the past had so many more, are new parents not taking kids trick or treating? My kids are still really little (6 mo old & 3 years old), but I'm starting to suspect it. There are 1200 homes in my extremely safe, suburban neighborhood. At least 2 kids in every house. We're talking thousands of kids. There are well-lit sidewalks, wide roads, and cars parked in garages or driveways instead of the streets. My street has 35 homes and only 4 houses with porch lights out, everyone else had at least one parent home handing out candy. I have no idea where all the kids were. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/idunno.gif)

We had less than expected - but we have had more in the past. We were thinking that maybe on Friday night there are more parties, but if Halloween falls on a Tuesday, you are just going to trick or treat for a couple of hours and then go home. We had several kids in our neighborhood that went to other neighborhoods and then slept over there, and we had several packs of kids where we knew one kid, and they were with kids from other neighborhoods. I don't see as much of that on school nights.

Do you see repeat kids, or do more adults show up in weak costumes? word will spread and the children will flock to you. Some will try to get you 2 or 3 times... Maybe I can run a security camera and to catch the ones that show up twice. Or maybe stamp their hand. Actually, I really like the hand stamp idea. Buy one that has a little pumpkin on it or something, and then have them stick out their hand for a fun stamp. And then if they try to get a second bar - I can call them out on it. It seems like all the things I do that are nice or generous always seem to come with an anal-retentive, bitchy catch. ![](http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff155/JiminiChristmas/smileys/witch07.gif)

Haha, we only had 12 kids, too! Lots of left overs here, not sure why? We in the past had so many more, are new parents not taking kids trick or treating? What they're doing here is a lot of the sanctioned events. Trunk or Treating was put on by a lot of area businesses in a parking lot where kids went from car to car and got candy. I drove by it before we went out and there was no freaking way I was going to do it. The line was huge and it was cold. So you're just standing there waiting for what was probably an hour at least. I'd rather be out walking from house to house and seeing all the decorating they did. They had another thing at one of the colleges where the kids went from dorm room to dorm room and there were other activities as well. We did it last year....again...huge line and wait. I don't know why this is considered the new better way to do this? It seems to suck to me! Lots of paranoid parents out there these days.

3 girls died in california by a hit and run....out trick or treating. Tragic. 10 million kids probably went trick or treating and are perfectly safe.

We get over 300 trick or treaters, so I give out 1 mini bar each. I figure they hit enough houses that they don't need any more then that from each. I got 2 mixed bags of 230 good candies (trix, 3-musketeers, snickers) from Walmart. $14 a bag. The town suggested 6 - 8 pm for 12 yo and under. It went that way. A big church at the end of the block had a great outside party with food and a blow-up slide.

I feel for the families of those girls, it was horrible. I feel for the family of Eric Duncan too. But just as I'm not going to freak out about catching ebola because of his death, I'm not going to live in fear my kids are going to be run down on Halloween either. I sometimes wonder if the media is doing us more harm than good.

We got the most kids last night of any year we have lived here. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/party.gif) I actually like seeing the kids and giving out candy and treats. How very un Ym of me. According to my Phil Script, a lump sum investment of $12.00 bearing an annual return of 11% could grow to $57.42 in 15 years! Bad beach! bad. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/tongue2.png) I am also the house that gives out cans of soda. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png)

I agree - if I pulled my kid away from every activity that has ever been indirectly responsible for a child's life, they would sit on the couch, wrapped in bubble wrap, and only drink their food. They wouldn't even be allowed to bathe.

We had probably 6 houses that did full bars and we weren't out long. Our exact neighborhood totally blows when it comes to trick or treaters (In terms of numbers). Now having lived in 2 houses, we have never had a blowout year in terms of numbers.
But I think kids don't stay out as late so that plays into it. Around here, the local businesses downtown have a day when they pass out candy. A few churches do trunk or treats. And an hour of trick or treating would have you well covered.
Plus, parents are more health conscience so I don't think they want the kids out there getting gobs of candy.
You can clean house at trunk or treats. 20 cars is like 20 houses and you can get away with going around at least 3 times.

In my area, there are so many activities leading up to Halloween- trunk or treats, fall festivals, pumpkin patches, Halloween parties, school stuff, etc. and candy is at all of them. She was in a costume at least once every week almost the entire month of October. By Halloween, my 3 year old just wasn't into it. She said "I have enough candy." After we got our first two trick or treaters, she decided she would put on her costume on and go- but it took a lot of encouragement. I'm thinking about packaging up the candy and sending it to the troops.

I don't see a reason to give full bars. You can only eat so much candy. So, I think it is kind of a waste to do that.

Kids have food shoved in their faces everywhere you go. It isn't like there is some lack of it. My GF has a daughter who is special needs and she has trouble controlling her weight. And, when she takes her places, people are offering her food all the time. But, if we go 60 full size candy bars, they wouldn't get eaten. I would probably just take them and drop them in the break room at work. Not saying it isn't a nice gesture. And, it might be fun to get one or two.

Telling your kids to be careful and taking precautions like making sure they're wearing a costume that doesn't limit their visibility is a lot different than not letting them go at all.
eta: Having said that, I just remembered my 12 year old couldn't see shit with his costume this year, but he was with us, so he wasn't having to judge traffic on his own.

This was a hit and run and alleged speeding so it looks like the driver was absolutely in the wrong. But early witness reports said the girls were just busy texting and didn't even look up when they stepped into the road. Maybe this is something parents need to be teaching their kids about! You know, when you're driving your kids home and are jabbering on the phone while driving, you are teaching your kids something and it isn't a good thing. i just wish this would not have happened though...

On my way home this afternoon, I passed a car that was driving irratically and noticed she was texting while driving. I honked my horn and called her a shithead - total reflex. Then I had to apologize to my daughter and explain that what that gal was doing was totally inappropriate, and she deserved to be called a shithead.

I get between 15-30 trick or treaters every year. The last few years I've given out full sized bars because there aren't that many kids around here and it doesn't break me. There is no increase in kids coming to my house because I give full sized bars out. The last kids came around 8:30 this year. Nobody had come for about a half hour & I had too much candy left that I would end up eating so the final 2 kids got about 6 bars each.
