money has left checking but not yet credited, balance is 93,285.88 - only 342 difference from July 9th? that does not seem right! 92,031.89 Super bummed I didn't drop below 92k this month, but, will next month I suppose.... I would add a little bit to minimum payments, but I had some other expenses come up for my "extra money" and now I am low in the bowl until my next payday. I did squirrel 1k into ibonds while I was flush though.... Will see where my thoughts are next month on how to handle the few extra dollars that might float around. For my RI payday I was anticipating - I decided to finally invest in getting a website together to maybe troll for business, or at least look a bit professional with the LLC. So have earmarked that money for the development and launch. We'll see if having a website comes to anything in terms of new business. But leastwise, I will have dedicated emails so any client communication doesn't get lost in my old, 30k unread messages, yahoo account. Yahoo account - mark of a boomer! Although, dd has one too My mortgage is $21 away from dropping down a spot but I resisted the urge to send extra because it's not my 2.75% interest rate that *needs* reduction. It's the 14.15% one with the balance hovering around $10,000. So I sent a few hundred to that one instead.

To further offset what was spent, I cancelled a couple magazine subscriptions that I had for my cousin's kids. They were $41 each and, while I'm a big advocate for reading, the kiddos are not without other sources so that's $80+ coming back to me.
And the boulder holders didn't fit--the downside of my local store not having my favorite style in stock is having to play the guessing game online--but barenecessities has improved their exchange processes to where you can submit your return for an exchange and they'll give you a shipping label for free as well as a code to be used on the purchase of the actual exchange. They used to give you a choice between paying for the return label out of your return credit or paying for the label to receive full refund credit. And the label used to be something like $9. Anyhoo, exchanging the 40H and 38HH for 40G and 40GG to further narrow down my needed size.

So...what to do with this 10K? After 10 days of comparing CD rates and almost pulling the trigger a dozen times on 3, 5, and 6 month options I finally just transferred it to my Fidelity brokerage account. The money market account currently has a 4.9% yield, which I'm sure will drop with the expected rate drops coming, but at least in an emergency it's easily accessible.
Const. Loan - $13,842 - 0% interest until May 2025 Citi Card - $7110 - 0% interest until March 2026
If I can manage to make the $754/month minimum payments for 6 more months, I'll be golden. At that point I should have $10,200 in the brokerage account and could just wipe out the first loan without even having to depend on my tax return. It's going to be a rough 6 months though.

$230 if I stick it in the 6 month CD.
Or I could gamble on a stock! Double my money in a couple months. ROCKETLAB! to the moon! so in other news....the FOMO was killing me. I bought 200 shares of rocketlab in my fidelity HSA. I might be a bit feverish, you never know! 200 shares is barely above 1k so an extremely modest investment. I'm not so feverish as to be in a mood to drop 5k on it *which I think would be the minimum to actually feel the glow if the rocket takes off*. But given that my research indicates that they have never posted a quarterly profit, call me crazy but I am toeing in very gingerly with a half expectation that a snapping turtle will take off my prized pinky toe as it is! Will evaluate this investment on 9/6/2034 and determine if it was a success. Meanwhile, half feeling like I need to quit this board and go join wallstreetbets or something....

I knew that was coming, but the timing was amusing. So many activity expenses.

nidena think of how much you saved towards these costs while you were on your "spending diet"! It's funny you mentioned it that way. I went back and counted how many shifts I've worked since my July 14th spending diet start date: 23. During 22 of them, I remembered to take my Gatorade so that's 22 times I didn't get something from the ebar at $7 a drink. That's $154. It's also 23 times I didn't stop at Starbucks before my shift which averages around $7, as well. So that's $161. Those two things essentially covered what I spent on the kitty cat and his dental stuff. Thank you for the reminder.

so in other news....the FOMO was killing me. I bought 200 shares of rocketlab in my fidelity HSA. I almost sold it a few weeks ago when it was over 7. That's about the point I sold it at the first time I owned it, then I jumped back in when it dropped back to 4. But, I do like the company and it's my way of supporting my space/rocket obsessed son while at the same time rooting for Elon's competition.

I am a boomer also. I still have a aol account. My son is a tech geek and keeps telling me to get a different account but everything I have is connected to this aol account. So I just go along as a boomer!

I did do a lot of research, and I think I will up my game here and aim for a position of 1000 shares. Although no quarterly profits as yet, they are pulling in a lot of money and I think they will get to profitability soon. Why are all the major space companies privately owned, aside from rocketlab? It is a little bit eerie to me. Are they trying to get the first to mars and own it outright? be a king of their own worlds? wtaf? Yes - em is probably thinking that with his army of robots and robotanks.......bezos? who knows! So yes, I am getting onboard with team rocketlab! Perhaps I can be her ladyship rukh on mars.....

I have 1000 shares. I haven't decided if I want to just sit on it long term or keep day trading like I have been. I look at the HSA funds beyond the years worth of max OOP I have in cash as play money.

Well, it will probably drop back down for you to buy some more soon. It seems to fluctuate between $4 and $7 quite a bit. I sold it for $7.20 last year and then bought it back up this year. I'd like to see it shoot up to 18 like it did in 2021.

Update: MuffyintheRed #2 9/23/2024 $155,555.74 (06/22/2020 $175,394.16) Amount Paid: +$404.46 CU Savings: $25,678.95
The increase is due to putting my DH's new iPhone on the Best Buy card. We have 18 month's interest free to pay it off, but we will get it paid off sooner than that. Otherwise an OK month. Just turtling along.
Have a good month everyone.

Grammytam 09/24/2024 $54,313.50 (07/18/2024 57,098.28) I was only able to pay a little more than the minimum on my HELOC this month. I am not sure what to do on this loan. I have some major dental work that needs to be done next year. I will not have all of the cash needed to pay my portion after insurance. This means that I will have to put some on my credit card. Do I save as much as I can or do I put that extra on the HELOC to help save some interest on that loan? I hate making these kinds of decisions.

Can you get a card with 0% on purchases for the remainder of the dental work? A couple months ago Discover was offering 18 months no interest and Citi 21 months. Not sure if those offers are still out there. If you can't pay it off within that time, then move what's left to the HELOC.

minnesotapaintlady I had not thought of a 0% card. I may look into that at the end of this year. The card I have does not have a great interest rate but I pay it off every month.

Oy! It looks like my .99% CC promo term ends on 10/25. I was thinking it was November. It'll reset to 23.49% at that time. Thankfully, it's not a Same As Cash kind of thing where ALL the back interest hits but I'd like to avoid it altogether so, when my GI Bill housing stipend hits on Oct 1st, I'll use that to pay off the balance.
The Spending Diet got a little wonky, as does any "diet", but I'm back on track and there was minimal damage.
Thankfully, with the cold weather incoming (and Hurricane Helene ushering it in), I have little desire to do anything to the yard besides rake the leaves over all the woodchips to further expedite their breakdown. I'll just let the yard fun hibernate for the winter.

I feel like I just posted not long ago, but I looked and it was the beginning of July. Oof. I am telling you, time is carrying on at avalanche speed anymore. In my last update, we were in between 2 big trips for my son's baseball. KC ended up being a really enjoyable trip for me- I fell in love with the area. It was HOT though and, true to our luck, the a/c went out in our AirBNB for the first 3 days we were there. Our host was so gracious and provided us with lots of fans and refunded us 3.5 days AND the cleaning fee, so we ended up staying there for way less than a hotel. Worth a few sweaty nights IMO. We literally returned home 2 nights before school kicked off, so we were frantically trying to get back into that mode. It's been go, go, go since then but we are starting to see the slow down we finally earn around this time of the year. ::exhales deeply:: As far as the money game goes, we have made some big changes over the last couple of months. 1. The biggest of those is that we did a consolidation of sorts and opened a HELOC with a much more manageable interest rate and the ability to freeze that rate whenever we want. This was H's idea to help us free up some money every month and stop hemorrhaging money in interest. If you recall, some of our cards were 20-30% and we didn't have any luck getting that lowered. Our HELOC is ~ 7%. Now the game plan is to pay off the debt we didn't consolidate ASAP and then literally throw everything we can at paying down the HELOC. 2. H met with one of the financial companies his employer uses and opened a Roth IRA. Contributions should begin next pay cycle and I love that it's just going to come right from his check (if I have more things to remember, I might crack). Right now he just has it set at $100/paycheck (he's paid bi weekly) and we will hopefully be able to increase that soon. Since we are 38 (well, I will be on the 22nd of this month), I know we are behind in doing all of this, but I keep saying *better late than never*. 3. H is also meeting with the corporation treasurer (if you forgot, he works in IT for a school corp) to start getting the match on his 401k. Right now the only contributions going into that have been the % of his annual salary that the corporation gives him. I told him if we have freed up some money every month, I'd love to stop leaving that free money in the match on the table. I won't know more on this until they have their meeting. I assume to make tracking easier, you will just want me to make a new race Minnesotagirl7 . I don't want to complicate things on your end Just let me know and I will get the numbers posted! I hope everyone else is doing well! I see we have some new races since I was last on- and seriousthistime it's nice to see your "face" around here again!
