More good stuff: I called, today, to take care of the homeowner's policy for Delaware. The credit that came from that will be applied to my auto policy payments which means I won't have payments for the next 6-10 months. It was ~$750 credit and my auto policy has a balance of $566, effective yesterday when I changed that. Sweet!

UPDATE: Maryland_Monroe[2]: 4/1/2020 $0 (1/1/2014 $93,528.61 NE113, C127)
Total paid: $93,528.61 (100%)
No credit cards, no loans, no mortgage. I'm free at last!
I started on 2/24/08 with credit cards. A while after they were paid off, I started this race, #2, with another credit card, a bank loan, and the mortgage. Along the way, I had to replace my car after an accident, and that got added in. Since February 2018, I have only had the mortgage left to pay. Thank you all for your encouragement!

for the rest of the racers.....how is everyone doing? I'm having a lot of anxiety about debt, income, future right now. I'm lucky that most of my debt is at zero interest right now, but everything seems so uncertain in these times. Maybe that is better than obsessing about the horribleness of the pandemic outside the house . Well - I'm obsessing about that too! I have about 3k+ on credit cards from stocking up on things. No regrets there, but thinking about - what if let go, what if they can't pay out my vacation time - which I always count on as an immediate buffer. What if they can't even pay my last check? No response from client about receiving the invoice/final deliverable. I'll check on Monday. But what if all that work and stress was for nothing and there isn't anyone in the office to pay the invoice? D'oh! I should have put an interest clause in for unpaid invoices!! And I spiral......

H and I are kicking around the idea of refinancing our mortgage while the rates are super low. We can turn our 30 year into a 15, slice our interest rate in half, take out a bit more money to pay down some debt/continue fixing up the house, and only pay about $100 more a month. It's very tempting....

Congratulations Maryland Monroe on winning your 2nd and final race!!! And here's a musical tribute to the tune of Elton John's amazing song, Candle in the Wind Goodbye mortgage scene, Though it's the biggest debt of all, She won the race to pay it off. She ran where others crawled. Goodbye every lien, snuffed by a steady Northeastern blow, She made her way and shared her strength, Wirrs sure love our Maryland Monroe. It seems to me, she snuffed out debt Like a candle in the wind Now she's the one we sing to For her big win. The credit cards and bank loan too Now they're off the grid. Her fire burned them one by one Our WirrFriend Maryland

Thank you debthaven . I love good music, and especially thoughtful, inspiring lyrics. (BTW I can't carry a tune in a bucket, so it's strictly an appreciation as a listener.) Also I love puzzles, and recognizing similarities and pieces that go together. Somehow those come together here in the musical tributes. It can be challenging to find the right inspiration song to use as the base tune... it needs to have a connection to the person's screen name, and be a positive or catchy tune that most people recognize. After that's picked I try to personalize it. That's why I didn't do them much when I wasn't actively racing, because I wasn't up to speed with each racer's race and personality, or might not know that someone had finished their race. I hope they contain visual or auditory nuggets that will stick with us all and be one more tool in our kit. For myself, it's a reminder that the gift of time and self are better than spending on a gift, and I try to apply that principle in the "real world" too. My hope is that each winner enjoys their song (Along the way seriousthistime , speechchick71 , & sealy have given me musical tributes that I enjoyed very much. And though I can't find it I believe snapdragon sent out a musical shoutout for a fellow racer which was very cool.)

Well, my race is going into glacial mode for now while I save the extra money I was putting towards the mortgage principal. I'm working from home for now but it's hard to predict what could happen in the future.

Taking a baby step this month. The majority of the fed loans are at 0% and no payments for 6 months. They had the effective date as 4-10, but for whatever reason - the payments on the 5th were cancelled as well. Yay! I'll get 6 months of relief from these! The two small loans from my master's 20+ years ago - which I consolidated 15 (+?) years ago - seem to not be eligible because of the consolidation. So those payments are continuing. Kind of a kick in the teeth for everyone who has consolidated. Glad these are small for me and that I procrastinated on consolidating. I accidentally did a double payment on those because when I went in - they had some red Past Due! notice so I did a payment and then at midnight the autopayment went through. For the private loan, I put an extra 200 there. But with everything going on - I really don't know how to play this going forward. I have a huge amount of job insecurity right now - it could go either way and I'm just trying to plan for anything. The master's loans balance is $1,682.72 at 3.75%, minimum payment is $68.63 the private loan's balance is $5,624.31 at 5.99%, minimum payment is $50.01 So wiping these out wouldn't make a lot of difference in terms of interest accruing or monthly obligations. I'll reassess where I am at next month, but for now my focus will be to shore up the EF....... whenever I get some extra cash to do so.....

I'm really glad that SLs went to no interest. I have the two and they're each 4.8% but it'll be cool to not have 1/3 of my payment go towards interest. So, instead of the balance dropping by $40 each month, it'll drop the full $67 that I'm paying each month. Freedom Mortgage hasn't zeroed the balance on the mortgage yet. It's been only a week, though. I'm just glad that payments are time-stamped and that they can't keep letting the balance accrue interest between when the settlement happened and when their happy asses process the damn payment. USAA hasn't processed my deposit yet either. Mailed it on the 1st, they should have received it by yesterday so I'm expecting it to clear by the end of this week. They might hold it a bit longer because of the amount.

UPDATE
ByeDebtBye: 04/07/20 $25,376.76 (09/28/18, $33,407.11, WIRR180)
Down $1,797.62 from last month! Paid off that $1,200 car repair bill that I mentioned last update (and then some)... After I finished paying off the car repair bill I was able to do a 0% interest for 12 months balance transfer to that same card with a $0 balance. That knocked off $2,250 from my highest balance card. I already have $200/month going toward the balance transfer so it is paid off within the 12 months. Also, my credit union was offering 0% for 24 month on personal loans up to $2,500. I was approved for the full amount, so that money also went toward my highest balance card. That card will now be paid off by November and then I can start throwing a large chunk of payments toward my SoFi debt consolidation loan. Feels good to free up some cash to be able to pay down my debt faster. I've managed to not add any new debt recently, which also feels fantastic.

It looks like they updated the SL website to actually reflect that no payments are due until Oct 4th. Looks like I'm going to have to remember to make the payment rather than rely on their auto-debit which is actually better because they always waited until after the 4th to reflect the payment had been made and now I can make it the same day that I get paid. Good stuff.

Hoarding as much cash as possible so only paying the minimum on all debts for now until we are out of this cluster and I can see clearly the road ahead. Applying for residency for my brother, another $535 on top of everything else and feeding him. Still have not made a solid decision about my wife and the PhD program but if she doe go we will need to figure out moving expenses, security deposit on new place (we sure as hell not going to buy another place) and everything else. nidena, I would recommend putting the student loan payments on auto-pay from your bank account until they start drafting them again. Does all of this mean that the payments you make during this time will go 100% toward the principal?

Can you wife inquire about any online courses for the degree? She may be able to do 1-2 years taking whatever is available online before moving to campus for classes not offered online and the dissertation phase. My program had many course available online - and with the current global situation - online may be the only course offered for up to 18 months. Once things do go back to normal - normal may be much more inclined towards online learning. It may be possible to do a few trips for prelims, defenses, etc. without moving. Just a suggestion! Academic work is a really nice thing to do currently - when there is so much that can't be done right now.

nidena , I would recommend putting the student loan payments on auto-pay from your bank account until they start drafting them again. Does all of this mean that the payments you make during this time will go 100% toward the principal?5 They're a line item in my Excel budget so I won't forget to pay them. I even bumped the payment up to $70 just to have a nice round number but here's some BS. With autopay, the interest rate was 4.8%. For whatever reason, they took that discount off and now the interest rate is back to 5.05%. I will just have to make sure that they bump it back down when these six months are up. But, from what I understand, yes, the payments should all be principal and that's why I'm not going to stop making them. That balance will be reduced by more than $400 come fall. In other news, Freedom showed my mortgage as paid and I have only an Escrow balance which I anticipate they'll send me a refund check. USAA decided to credit my checking account with a deposit for the housing insurance rather than keeping the credit balance on my Insurance account. So, I will just pay that balance off and won't worry about auto insurance payments until the policy renews. They also received my settlement check. It was only one check but they put a partial hold on it: all the funds are showing deposited but 7/17th aren't available until the 10th, 10/17th are available now. I'm not complaining though. I'll be able to pay off the AmEx and a portion of the Visa.

I wouldn't make plans to move for Fall semester anywhere. Colleges around here are already hinting at the possibility of things still being all online then and students are worried about leases they have already signed.
