Puttering along. H FINALLY sent his invoice for the big side job he has been working on. His last bit of work there got super delayed because the poor contractor was having a heckuva time finding subcontractors for painting and flooring. I think he ended up doing a lot of it himself. H emailed the invoice to the homeowner today, so hopefully that check is signed FAST. I think I will breathe a lot easier once that comes. We are getting a small tax refund this year, which is much nicer than owing $6000 last year. It's estimated at $2,350. We haven't finalized a plan for that yet. I am just getting antsy to make a real dent in this debt. It's disheartening every payday to pay the regular bills and be like "hey, we're doing good!"....and then the debt payments get scheduled and we are broke until next pay day. We did it to ourselves but ugghhhhh. I know it could be so much worse but I am ready for some relief.

regular minimum payments again this month. Not sure I'll have any extra for a while! Waiting on a few extra $$ to come through but feel like more and more of it is being spent before it even gets here!

I'm just paying the minimums on the student loans and most of them are just a few hundred less than what I originally borrowed - some from 10 years ago already! Been trying to get together some money to make a dent in it to start to get some momentum going, but money is just running through my fingers right now. Oh well. I'll see what happens next month!

We haven't finalized a plan for that yet.nikiz628 Menards is your lowest balance and highest interest rate. And you'd still have about $100 left over for a nice treat. I hope the money from your DH's side job comes in soon!

Unbelievable. Conspiracy theories are just - wow. This is why I left before.
Guess what? Goodbye.

When I saw this, I assumed it involved the paying contractors cash for a discount conversation since a comment of assisting tax fraud was made.
I could be wrong. It may have been something on another thread.

that's not really a conspiracy theory, though. but perhaps. I did think it was rich coming from someone who immediately jumped to my credit card company bait-and-switching me into a usury situation and suggesting I file a class action lawsuit over having a confusing statement. but what do I know?

It wasn't a conspiracy theory. It's what happens when contractors are paid in cash. Ask me how I know?

Well, there are better ways to state that saving $3000 by paying cash MIGHT contribute to the contractor not declaring what they receive on their business taxes. But, yeah, let's call fellow WIRR folx criminals. That'll keep 'em coming around. Especially if they spent the last year dealing with a roommate who turned out to be a hoarder and left them holding the bag when it came to cleaning up their space and figuring out what to do with four animals that didn't belong to them and having to pay to get rid of said hoarder's stuff and being called all kinds of names by that same despicable person. Yep, big supportive stuff here.
Again, even if it IS true to the situation, there are better ways to say it.

Folx also mentioned that doing all the work "under the table" might not give lark1964 the necessary guarantees she needs to have after the work is completed. What if something is done badly, and there is nothing in writing?! But also, since when has everybody needed to be in agreement on anything here?! As we all like to quip, personal finance is personal. I think people just want Lark to be cautious, because we are all aware that she HAS had a VERY hard time of it recently, and we care about her. Rukh O'Rorke I agree, it would be good if you could get some traction going so your money goes further going forward. Even 5K would do it!

I'm a bit overextended now and likely to get worse in the near terms at least. However! on the plus side since it is a level payment over 10 years, every month the interest portion is lower and the principal payment is larger..... I can't even say i will get to putting extra in there any time soon, too many things on my plate right now. But the balance is steadily decreasing, so that is nice to see month to month.

Good points Nidena, but as debthaven points out there is concerns she might have been getting herself in trouble without realizing it. I went back to look at the post made, and she explicitly mentioned no sales tax. That is a red flag for sure. And asking if there is a cash discount is different than offering 100 dollar bills I think. So I'm not clear if she was intentionally crossing the law or didn't understand the implications of doing this. And a paper trail of work and equipment is important in case they don't do it right! As several posters mentioned.

I know that in my many years racing my debt and posting religiously here in this thread, some comments can seem kind of harsh. But the various perspectives and styles are one of the many benefits of baring our souls and posting here. Everyone is free to listen, or not. Who among us has not felt the sting of harsh criticism here? And still felt stung for a while afterward, too? We are here to support, but also to educate and offer an alternate perspective.

There is a big difference between offering harshly worded insight, suggestion, and constructive criticism and accusing someone of tax fraud. Hell, I paid my contractor in cash last year because I don't have checks for the Personal Loan that I got for my fence. You know what I got after I paid? A receipt that outlined what I paid with no mention of any sales tax but did have a very detailed list of all the things that went into building the fence. Do I think my contractor is committing tax fraud. No, I do not. Why did I pay cash? Because I didn't want to pay a fee for a damn cashier's check when I'm already paying nearly 14% on a loan. Also, I know that cash is just easier because checks can take a week or more to clear, especially when ones in the thousands are subject to being held for longer because of their size. I know the horse is now dead so I won't continue to beat it.

y'all, thank you for all you've done for me over the years, IRT: beating the wisdom into me. old chiver would have just thrown it all on a card and called it good, and that's why I'm here. I'm getting twitchy about wiping out my HYSA to pay the landscapers this week, and I'm grudgingly going to eat some stupid-level interest on my daily user CC with the travel I've booked recently. so, I'm feeling better (as much as it sucks) about bailing on the week on the FL panhandle with the girls. condo is still in my name, but I've sold both my festival ticket and condo spot. I'll just pass along the door code when it comes in. whoo..... I've already mapped out how/when I'll be repaying what I've already taken from the HYSA in upcoming paychecks. and as I pulled the vacation time from that week back from the HR tracker, I decided to just take all of next week off instead of just W-F. Monday is Marathon Monday, and a longtime friend who is actually running will be coming down to visit Tuesday. my mom arrives early Wednesday morning, my flight is noon. M (not *that* M) will be heading out from my place to go visit more friends around here, she actually interned at the place I call my train wreck job and still has contacts around here. just ticking off the time til Friday 5pm so I can turn this damn laptop off for 10 days.

I am totally twitchy about pulling so much money out for the high dollar waterproofing. This way I can pay cash for the repair (by check).
I really didn't want to use the Heloc and pay interest on it.
At my age and time in life, I don't really have a way to increase my income.

So, digging myself a deeper hole (literally). I'm having a water mitigation and triple sump pump installed this week to the tune of $18,500. Anyone that has been on the "What are you doing" thread knows I've been battling flooding in my finished basement periodically for forever. It's been a few years, but I guarantee it will happen again, we've just had some good winters lately and a couple years of drought. I'm starting to feel too old to be down there all night with a shop vac moving furniture and pulling up carpet like I've done so many times in the past. I found a company that seems sure they can fix this for me and I just went all in...they're coming out later this week. If it works it will be worth every penny. If it doesn't...well...I'll probably cry. But it has to at least help...I would hope. So, they had financing available including the option of 36 months at 18-27% (depending on credit score I suppose), but the first 12 months is 0%. The guy tried to talk me out of it saying how risky it was if you missed a payment, but I wont and I fully intend on paying it off with the HELOC just before the 12 months is up, I'm just buying myself some free-money time.
Their other options were really crappy. 10 years at 10% and 7 years at 11%. Yeah no. I could just as easily have just put it all on the HELOC right out of the gate, but this is probably saving me $600 in interest over the next year.
So, starting in May probably I'll have TWO races going.

I'm waiting for my mortgage payment to clear and then I'll update.
My HRV is no longer $9XXX. It's now $8XXX. And I'm hoping my mortgage balance goes from $103,XXX to $102,XXX.
