LMAO, Jenny! When I hugged you good-bye I was thinking that maybe you aren't a hugger. Oops!

I grew up in a family of non-huggers and married into a family that are big huggers. It took some getting used to, but I realize I was missing out while growing up.

I'm so not a hugger either! I'm more of a fist bump kind of gal. Unfortunately, that doesn't go over well with the in-laws, so 4 or 5 times a year I suck it up and hug.
*disclaimer* I hug DH and the kids daily, but they're it.

"That is one thing I loved about living in the south...they were huggers and I love to be hugged and to give out hugs."
LOL I never really thought it might be a Southern thing, but we are definitely huggers around here. Family, friends, even my coworkers at my job hug.
I was in a bar one night and ended up having a conversation with a woman whose apartment had been broken into the night before, while she was sleeping. She was upset because she got robbed, I would've been more upset that it happened while I was sleeping. Anyway, when I was leaving she thanked me for talking and being sympathetic and hugged me. I'd never seen her before in my life! I just took it in stride though.
The guys at the corner store I frequent, hug me sometimes.
Generally, I do not like people I don't know touching me or invading my space. But I try to accept it in the spirit it's given. If it's an intention I'm not ok with, I have no problem saying "Don't touch me".

They tend to frown on that at the family reunions.

I don't go around hugging people that I don't know in a familial capacity, but I don't mind being hugged.
When a person feels a genuine impulse to hug--that is, when s/he doesn't feel obligated to do so--it's one of those random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty we've all heard about.
It's a fellow human being telling us that we make them feel good, and they very much want us to feel the same.
